Arnold Bennett is well-known for his regional novels that mainly represent domestic quotidian lives of his pottery town,especially the lower and middle class.However,his infatuation with the hotel space implicates his ambition to re-situate his characters within the parameters of hotel and create new types of characters,representing in new ways the subjectivity of characters and their relations with material space.Based on his hotel writing,this article intends to re-conceive the historical reasons of his obsession with hotel space and further probe the modernity deflected by his representation of domestic selves and modern public identities in hotel space.

In this article,Mocombe highlights what he calls the pathological-pathogenic purposive-rationalities(liberalism,nihilism,conservatism,postmodernism,intersectionality/identity politics,and secular humanism)that emerge out of modernity as constituted by the West under American hegemony.In the place of these pathological-pathogenic responses to the vagaries of modernity,Mocombe calls for an antihumanism,associated with what he calls libertarian communism,as a panacea to the aforementioned malaises.

This paper intends to analyze Cahan's attitudes towards assimilation and modernity and how he builds up modernity for all of the Americans. Three characters in"The Imported Bridegroom", who stand for three prototypes of modern Jewish-Americans confronting the overwhelming flood of assimilation and the duty for retaining their traditions, will be analyzed. Through the composition of this work, Cahan tried to spread the Jewish culture on the one hand, and on the other, he warned the peripheral that it was difficult to be assimilated without disasters even if they had made contribution to the formation of modernity.

The Solution to Current Psychosocial Problems and the “Unfulfilled Enlightenment” of Modernity in the New Era

The transition period of Chinese society has spawned many psychosocial problems in China,which are characterized by high incidence,universality and growth. Compared with social and economic development,the devel-opment of social psychology has been relatively slow for a long time,which has led to the prevalence of psychosocial problems and the lack of modernity cultivation in China's modernization. Xi Jinping theory on socialism with Chi-nese characteristics(SCC) in the new era is a scientific plan for the all - round development and modernization of SCC,and it contains rich ideas of modernity. It is also the ideological inheritance and innovation of Marx's "full and free development of human beings",and the basic strategy of cultivating the modernity of the new era. Prevalence and Patterns of Divorce in Vietnam： Tradition, Modernity, and Individualism

In Vietnam, divorce traditionally was considered scandalous for women, so there was a strong pressure against divorce, especially for women. While divorce has long been culturally discouraged and limited, divorce has been rapidly increasing after the renovation policy in late 1980s with alternative causes, consequences, etc Modernization is a process of transforming ＂traditional＂ society to ＂modern＂ one, in order to achieve economic development and growth, to innovate politics and to enhance their social structure towards a political, social, and economic system similar to those of western developed countries. In the field of marriage, family, and kinship, modernization process experiences the maintenance of traditional values and the appearance of the new modern values. This paper aims to examine trend and correlates of divorce and to identify social and cultural factors influencing the divorce decision, using data of divorce profiles of one district court in 10 years （i.e., 2000-2009） with total divorce profiles analyzed are 2,033 cases, of which 499 divorce couples in a rural district and 1,534 divorced couples in an urban area.

Yu Opera China Women (some translated it into Our Company)(2000) has been well received by audiences for its simple folk description, vivid characters, touching story lines, stunning stage backgrounds, and exquisite stage performances. The opera describes a story of Xiangxiang and Huanhuan, mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, two generations of women in the reform and opening up years in the 20th century in China. These Chinese women try to break the shackles of fate, with the strength to overcome hardships, work hard to gain wealth, and be brave to pursue true love, so it has a strong sense of feminism. However, rooted in the deep traditional Chinese culture, Xiangxiang and Huanhuan are always struggling between tradition and modernity and they make difficult choices along with the awakening of women’s consciousness.

Between Tradition and Modernity： Wuzhen and China＇s Soft Power in the 21 st Century

In recent years, Wuzhen, a Ming-Qing style water town located south of the Yangtze River, has quickly become one of the most popular tourist destinations in China. The success of Wuzhen was so influential that the term ＂Wuzhen Model＂ quickly became a buzzword in Chinese economic and cultural discourses. Promoters of Wuzhen have claimed that it embodies both tradition and modernity, therefore representing the best of China. While Wuzhen was first reconstructed as a ＂living museum＂ of Chinese cultural tradition to attract tourists, it increasingly started to claim itself as a leading ＂smart town＂ for China＇s future development. The Concept of Leisure as Culture-dependent-Between Tradition and Modernity

The article deals with the concept of leisure in Israel in terms of time, activity, state of mind, and Jewish values. The purpose of the study is to examine changes in how leisure is conceived in Judaism and the differences in the secular and religious conception of leisure, and the special relationship between leisure, work, and religious obligations and tradition. The study reviews the factors that have shaped the conception of leisure and its developments over time in Jewish religious society in general and in Israel in particular, which is a country with cultural foundations in both tradition and modernity, and one that strives to strike a balance between its multiple commitments to its religious roots and its modern democratic nature. The study proceeds to discuss the implications of such conceptions and developments for the Israeli education system. The article may have practical implications for imparting leisure behaviors, an educational challenge involving people＇s attitude to leisure.

Research on Chinese Urban Modernity Issues From the Perspective of Technology Rational Critique

With the development of urbanization,metropolises and megapolises are emerging.Urbanization is being completed with the driving force of capital;meanwhile,technology has achieved the quest of capital.In this thesis,in light of Henri Lefebvre’s ideology of technology rational critique,Chinese urban modernity issues under the perspective of technology rational critique were analyzed,including issues like eroded urban texture,urban mechanization,and urban segregation.The technology rational root of Chinese urban modernity issues was discussed from the turn of technical artifacts from design intention to application intention.In the end,possible methods to solve these Chinese urban modernity issues were illustrated based on Henri Lefebvre’s urban development theory.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan.Looking back on the past and forward to the future,we realize modernity has become a critical issue that not only China and Japan,but the whole East Asian region should pay attention to.China and Japan are both within the“Circle of Confucius Culture”and are both modern latecomer countries.As they were coerced by western countries to enter the modern age,they shared multiple common features.An exploration of the two countries’respective rising of modern women’s education is an important path to discuss the reconstruction of gender and an important method of the course of the embodiment of east-Asian women into modernization drives.With regards to conclusion,entering the modern age,Chinese and Japanese intellectuals reshaped the female gender in terms of interpersonal relationship,value system,and knowledge structure by advocating the idea of“virtuous wives and worthy mothers”education.In the concept of virtuous wives and worthy mothers in East Asia,the Confucian ethics of“docility and virtue”is the soul,and modern scientific knowledge serves this core value.On the other hand,in the course of localization in China and Japan,this imported concept from the West has encountered a completely different historical fate.

Woman as the Trope:Perceiving the Altering Conceptions of Chinese Modernity from Females’Posters before and during Mao’s Era

Woman as a political trope had been essential to the Chinese Communist Party’s state vision of socialist modernization after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.The Party valued women’s labor and devoted to emancipating it from the domestic realm so that women could be mobilized to actively participate in the collective socialist construction.Associating the figure of women with modernity is not an unprecedented strategy,for during the early twentieth century the“Modern Girl”embodying the essence of Chinese modernity had already become a conspicuous cultural icon in various kinds of visual cultural products.This paper investigates the ways in which females’public visual images were consciously constructed in the two different historical periods in order to cater to particular political or commercial schemes.It argues that while those images objectively capture the reality of social modernity to some extents,they also imply the artists’imaginary of an ideal vision of modernization.By registering female figures as the center for presentation,they were inscribed with males’desires through envisioning desirable female images that would correspond to their expectations of the concreteness of modernity.
