Genetic counselling in post-genomic era-to be or not to be

With the surge of genetic tests and technologies, genetic counsellors are faced with the challenge of translating emerging scientific knowledge into practical information for patients, clinicians and public health policy makers. The new tests and technologies also are associated with new psychosocial and ethical considerations. New guidelines are needed for each new discovery of the genomic impact on phenotype, pathology and disease while "old" syndromes and "old" pathology, continue to require attention. In the new postHuman Genome Project era, genetic counsellors will be an integral part of translating genomic discoveries into beneficial impact on human disease, health care, and medical benefits. The needs for genetic counselling should be designed into genomic research at the onset. The Gadfly written by Irish authoress Ethel Lilian Voynich remains silent with her work in the Western world. However, after its translation and publication in China in the 1950s by LI Liang-min, it becomes a revolutionary canon and enjoys the equal popularity with some Soviet progressive revolutionary fictions which were prevailing in China. The Gadfly has enormous influence and appeal in China. It was an indubitable canon in readers＇ heart at that time. But the translated version that people read is an abridgement, which includes more than 60 deletions. It is indicated from the analysis that the canonization of The Gadfly in China is far from a casual phenomenon. Instead, it is the result of the manipulation of the prevailing ideology and poetics.

This paper explores the relationship between the original and its translation by interpreting Benjamin's three metaphors from his The Translator's Task. The exploration starts with the metaphor of"the tangent of a circle",where it is interpreted that although the translated version should be faithful to its original in terms of meaning,yet it is a deviation due to different internal and external factors. Then,in the metaphor of"afterlife",the discussion demonstrates that the translated version proceeds from the original,but the original depends on it for its survival and afterlife in different eras. Later,based on the metaphor of"fragments of a vessel",the author states that the original and its translation are equal and complementary,just like the fragments of a vessel,responsible for the development and renewal of each other through translation. Finally,it is concluded that a better understanding of their relationship can offer us a new perspective in translation studies and practice.
