The effects of plastic deformation on precipitation behavior and tensile fracture behavior of Mg-10Gd-3Y-0.6Zr alloy were investigated. The results indicate that more precipitation cores can be provided by the crystal defects caused by the plastic deformation,as well as increasing the amount of β' phases, and the formation of precipitations at grain boundaries and interfaces between the twins and matrix.Because of an increase in precipitations, the dislocation slipping during deformation process is effectively hindered and the matrix is strengthened, especially for the 2% deformed alloy which can achieve a good combination of strength and ductility. With increasing the plastic deformation, the microcracks occur at the interface between grain boundary precipitations and matrix, and then propagate intergranularly. When intergranular fracture combines with the formation of smoothing facets on the fracture surface, the tensile properties decrease. 展开更多

To explore the effect of strain rate ε on the high temperature deformation characteristics of ultrafine-grained materials, the deformation and damage features as well as microstructures of ECAP-treated pure Al at different temperatures T and strain ratesε were systematically studied through compression tests and microscopic observations. The increase in ε eliminates strain softening at T≤473 K, and largely enhances the yield strength and flow stress at 473?573 K. The shear deformation dominates the plastic deformation of ECAP-treated Al. Many cracks along shear bands (SBs) are formed at T≥473 K and secondary SBs basically disappear at 1×10?3 s?1; however, at 1×10?2 s?1, cracks are only observed at temperature below 473 K, and secondary SBs become clearer at T≥473 K. The microstructures of ECAP-treated Al mainly consist of sub-grains (SGs). The increase in ε inhibits the SG growth, thus leading to the increases both in yield strength and flow stress at high temperatures. 展开更多

Effects of temperature on tensile properties and deformation behavior of the nickel-based superalloy GH4586A have been investigated. The results showed that deforming temperature has no effect on the microstructure of the alloy, while tensile properties are thermo-sensitive. With the increasing testing temperature the strength of the alloy decreased, and the ductility increased. While, the ductility of the alloy decreased weakly at the temperature range of 823 K to 923 K. And the main reason can be considered as the easily-broken of the MC type block carbides due to the stress concentration at the interface between the matrix and carbides to form the micro-cracks during the deforming process. 展开更多

The effects of heat treatment on microstructure and tension property of Ni-Co film/Fe substrate systems were investigated. The deformation and fracture morphologies of Ni-Co films/Fe substrate systems were studied by in-situ scanning electron microscopy(in-situ SEM)before and after heat treatment. The results show that a Ni-Co/Fe diffusion layer appears between the film and substrate after heat treatment;the elongation of film/substrate system increases with increasing the heat treatment temperature. Both the strength and ductility of the film/substrate system are preferable when heat treatment temperature is 650 o C,meanwhile the maximum elongation is up to 46%.During tensile deformation, the deformation behaviors of Ni-Co film/Fe substrate are quite different before and after heat treatment. The samples after heat treatment went through the progress of holes’emergence, growth and extension, whereas the samples without heat treatment accompanied with no holes, just cracked instead, showing that appropriate heat treatment is helpful to improve the toughness of material, and mechanical properties. 展开更多

The anisotropic mechanical behavior of rocks under high-stress and high-temperature coupled conditions is crucial for analyzing the stability of surrounding rocks in deep underground engineering. This paper is devoted to studying the anisotropic strength, deformation and failure behavior of gneiss granite from the deep boreholes of a railway tunnel that suffers from high tectonic stress and ground temperature in the eastern tectonic knot in the Tibet Plateau.High-temperature true triaxial compression tests are performed on the samples using a self-developed testing device with five different loading directions and three temperature values that are representative of the geological conditions of the deep underground tunnels in the region.Effect of temperature and loading direction on the strength, elastic modulus,Poisson’s ratio, and failure mode are analyzed. The method for quantitative identification of anisotropic failure is also proposed. The anisotropic mechanical behaviors of the gneiss granite are very sensitive to the changes in loading direction and temperature under true triaxial compression, and the high temperature seems to weaken the inherent anisotropy and stress-induced deformation anisotropy. The strength and deformation show obvious thermal degradation at 200℃due to the weakening of friction between failure surfaces and the transition of the failure pattern in rock grains. In the range of 25℃ 200℃,the failure is mainly governed by the loading direction due to the inherent anisotropy. This study is helpful to the in-depth understanding of the thermal-mechanical behavior of anisotropic rocks in deep underground projects. 展开更多

An investigation on the plastic behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloy under ultrasonic vibration(with a frequency of 15 kHz and a maximum output of 2 kW) during the process of tension at room temperature was conducted to reveal the volume effect of the vibrated plastic deformation of AZ31.The characteristics of mechanical properties and microstructures of AZ31 under routine and vibrated tensile processes with different amplitudes were compared. It is found that ultrasonic vibration has a remarkable influence on the plastic behavior of AZ31 which can be summarized into two opposite aspects:the softening effect which reduces the flow resistance and improves the plasticity, and the hardening effect which decreases the formability. When a lower amplitude or vibration energy is applied to the tensile sample, the softening effect dominates, leading to a decrease of AZ31 deformation resistance with an increase of formability.Under the application of a high-vibrating amplitude, the hardening effect dominates, resulting in the decline of plasticity and brittle fracture of the samples. 展开更多

The hot deformation behavior of Al?6.2Zn?0.70Mg?0.30Mn?0.17Zr alloy was investigated by isothermal compressiontest on a Gleeble?3500machine in the deformation temperature range between623and773K and the strain rate range between0.01and20s?1.The results show that the flow stress decreases with decreasing strain rate and increasing deformation temperature.Basedon the experimental results,Arrhenius constitutive equations and artificial neural network(ANN)model were established toinvestigate the flow behavior of the alloy. The calculated results show that the influence of strain on material constants can berepresented by a6th-order polynomial function. The ANN model with16neurons in hidden layer possesses perfect performanceprediction of the flow stress. The predictabilities of the two established models are different. The errors of results calculated by ANNmodel were more centralized and the mean absolute error corresponding to Arrhenius constitutive equations and ANN model are3.49%and1.03%,respectively.In predicting the flow stress of experimental aluminum alloy, the ANN model has a betterpredictability and greater efficiency than Arrhenius constitutive equations. 展开更多

The relationship among microstructure, mechanical properties and texture of TA32 titanium alloy sheets during hot tensile deformation at 800℃was investigated. In the test, the original sheet exhibited relatively low flow stress and sound plasticity, and increasing the heat treatment temperature resulted in an increased ultimate tensile strength(UTS)and a decreased elongation(EL).The deformation mechanism of TA32 alloy was dominated by high angle grain boundaries sliding and coordinated by dislocation motion. The coarsening of grains and the annihilation of dislocations in heat-treated specimens weakened the deformation ability of material, which led to the increase in flow stress.Based on the high-temperature creep equation, the quantitative relationship between microstructure and flow stress was established. The grain size exponent andαphase strength constant of TA32 alloy were calculated to be 1.57 and 549.58 MPa,respectively. The flow stress was accurately predicted by combining with the corresponding phase volume fraction and grain size.Besides, the deformation behavior of TA32 alloy was also dependent on the orientation of predominantαphase, and the main slip mode was the activation of prismaticslip system. The decrease of near prism-oriented texture in heat-treated specimens resulted in the enhancement of strength of the material. 展开更多

Hot deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of hot isostatically pressed FGH96 P/M superalloy were studied using isothermal compression tests. The tests were performed on a Gleeble-1500 simulator in a temperature range of 1000-1150 °C and strain rate of 0.001-1.0 s-1, respectively. By regression analysis of the stress—strain data, the constitutive equation for FGH96 superalloy was developed in the form of hyperbolic sine function with hot activation energy of 693.21 kJ/mol. By investigating the deformation microstructure, it is found that partial and full dynamical recrystallization occurs in specimens deformed below and above 1100 °C, respectively, and dynamical recrystallization (DRX) happens more readily with decreasing strain rate and increasing deformation temperature. Finally, equations representing the kinetics of DRX and grain size evolution were established. 展开更多

Traditional soil additives like Portland cement and lime are prone to cause the brittle fracture behavior of soil, and possibly, environmental impacts. This study explores the potential use of polyurethane organic polymer and sisal fiber in improving the mechanical performance of sand. The effects of polymer content, fiber content, and dry density on the unconfined compressive strength(UCS)and direct tensile strength(DTS)of the polymer-fiber-sand composite were evaluated. The results showed significant increase in UCS and DTS of the reinforced sand with the increase of polymer content, fiber content, and dry density. At high dry density condition,a single peaked stress−strain curve is often observed.Higher polymer content is beneficial to increasing the peak stress, while higher fiber content contributes more to the post-peak stress. The combined use of polymers and fibers in soil reinforcement effectively prevents the propagation and development of cracks under the stress.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM)test was also performed to investigate the micro-structural changes and inter-particle relations. It was found through SEM images that the surface coating, bonding, and filling effects conferred by polymer matrix greatly enhance the interfacial interactions, and hence provide a cohesive environment where the strength of fibers could be readily mobilized. 展开更多

The hot deformation behaviors of TA15 alloy,as well as the microstructure obtained after compressive deformation, were investigated. The results show that TA15 alloy exhibits a peak stress when deformed at temperature lower than 900 ℃,implying recrystallization characteristics. However, steady flow stress-stain behavior is observed without peak stress when deformation is employed at temperature higher than 900 ℃,showing recovery characteristics.Micro-deformation band appears at deformation temperature of 750 ℃,and equiaxed grains are found at 800 ℃,implying the occurrence of recrystallization. When deformed at 925 ℃,the specimen shows the recovery characteristics with dislocation networks and sub-grain boundaries. 展开更多

The consideration of time dependence is essential for the study of deformation and fracturing processes of rock materials, especially for those subjected to strong compressive and tensile stresses. In this paper, the self-developed direct tension device and creep testing machine RLW-2000M are used to conduct the creep tests on red sandstone under uniaxial compressive and tensile stresses. The short-term and long-term creep behaviors of rocks under compressive and tensile stresses are investigated, as well as the long-term strength of rocks. It is shown that, under low-stress levels, the creep curve of sandstone consists of decay and steady creep stages; while under high-stress levels, it presents the accelerated creep stage and creep fracture presents characteristics of brittle materials. The relationship between tensile stress and time under uniaxial tension is also put forward. Finally, a nonlinear viscoelastoplastic creep model is used to describe the creep behaviors of rocks under uniaxial compressive and tensile stresses. 展开更多

The crystal plasticity finite element modeling (CPFEM) is realized in commercial finite element code ABAQUS with UMAT subroutine on the basis of the crystal plasticity theory of rate dependent polycrystal constitutive relations in the mesoscopic scale. The initial orientations obtained by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) are directly input into the CPFEM to simulate the mechanical response of polycrystalline 1050 pure Al in uniaxial tensile deformation. Two polycrystal models and two tensile strain rates were used in the simulations. The stress-strain curves of tensile deformation were analyzed. The predictions and the corresponding experiment result show reasonable agreement and slight deviation with experiments. The flow true stress of strain rate 0.01 s^-1 is higher than that of strain rate 0.001 s^-1. At the strain less than 0.05, the stress saturated rate of the experiment is higher than the simulated results. However, the stress saturated rate of the experiment becomes gentler than the corresponding simulated predictions at the strain over 0.05. Also, necking was simulated by the two models, but the necking strain is not well predicted. Tensile textures at strain 0.25 were predicted at the low strain rate of 0.001 s^-1. The predictions are in good accord with the experimental results. 2008 University of Science and Technology Beijing. All rights reserved. 展开更多

To explore the influence of cyclic pre-deformation on the mechanical behavior of ultrafine-grained(UFG)materials with a high stacking fault energy(SFE),UFG Al processed by equal-channel angular pressing(ECAP)was selected as a target material and its tensile behavior at different pre-cyclic levels D(D=N_i/N_f,where N_i and N_f are the applied cycles and fatigue life at a constant stress amplitude of 50 MPa,respectively)along with the corresponding microstructures and deformation features were systematically studied. The cyclic pre-deformation treatment on the ECAPed UFG Al led to a decrease in flow stress, and a stress quasi-plateau stage was observed after yielding for all of the different-state UFG Al samples. The yield strengths_(YS),ultimate tensile strengths_(UTS),and uniform straineexhibited a strong dependence on D when D≤20%;however,when D was in the range from 20%to 50%,no obvious change in mechanical properties was observed. The micro-mechanism for the effect of cyclic pre-deformation on the tensile properties of the ECAPed UFG Al was revealed and compared with that of ECAPed UFG Cu through the observations of deformation features and microstructures. 展开更多
