The theoretical characterizations on the triangular-form thixotropy-loop tests of an LDPE melt (PE-FSB- 23D022/Q200) were conducted in the present paper by using a new thixotropy model, which is constituted by the upper convected Maxwell model and a rate-type kinetic equation. The new thixotropic Maxwell model can partially describe well three reported thixotropy-loop experiments by comparison with the previous calculations of the variant form of the thixotropy-type Huang model. It is noted that the stress deviations between the experiments and the predictions of the new thixotropic Maxwell model are much slighter than those deviations obtained by using the variant Huang model at the same condition, although both models include five parameters. The constitution of the new thixotropic Maxwell model is more reasonable than that of the variant Huang model. 展开更多

A new simple thixotropy model was proposed in the present paper to characterize the thixotropy-loop experiments and the start-up experiment of an LDPE (PE-FSB23D0221Q200) melt. The thixotropy model is a combination of a viscoelastic-component and a postulated kinetics process of structure change, which is constituted in terms of the indirect microstructural approach usually adopted in the characterization of thixotropy. The descriptions of the thixotropy model on both the thixotropy-loop tests and the startup test show good agreement with the experimental values, indicating the good capability of the model in characterizing the time-dependent nonlinear viscoelastic. The stress overshoot phenomenon and the stress relaxation after cessation of the thixotropy loop test can be described well by the model, whereas both of the typical viscoelastic phenomena could not be described in our previous work with a variant Huang model. 展开更多

The definition of the thixotropy is a decrease in viscosity with time in shear and a subsequent recovery of viscosity after the shear deformation is removed. We used therefore start-up experiments with constant shear rates and can speak consequently of shear stress instead of viscosity. The shear stress increases sharply at the beginning of the stress growth experiment, passes an overshoot and begins to decrease up to the steady state shear stress. We can assume that a stress growth curve with an overshoot points out to thixotropic behavior. After the steady state shear stress is reached, the shear deformation is stopped, and the stress relaxation begins. It is to be expected that the shear stress will recover after the stress relaxation.Systems with shear thinning and plastic flow behavior were examined. The thixotropy is discussed in relation to the flow behavior.Stress growth experiments were performed with shear rates from the first Newtonian region and from the shear thinning region of the systems with shear thinning flow behavior.Stress start-up experiments were carrying out with shear rates from the first and second yield stress regions and from the transition section of a system with plastic flow behavior. 展开更多

The thixotropy properties and the motion law of a sphere in the Bingham fluid have been studied. Through observation of the settling motion of a single sphere in the Bingham fluid on the X-ray screen, it has been discovered that the mud in estuaries and along sea bay, and the hyperconcentrated flow all behave as the Bingham fl fluid with thixotropy properties as the large sediment concentration. Through derivation, the theoretical relationship between the yield stress and non-settling maximum sphere supported by the stress for the Bingham fluid has been developed, the equations for calculating the increasing yield stress and the non-settling maximum sphere diameter with the duration at rest of the slurry have been obtained. In consideration of the effect of thixotropy on fluid motion, the Navier-Stokes equation group for the Bingham thixotropy fluid has been developed. Through further study of the flow boundary condition of settling motion of ii single sphere in the Bingham thixotropy fluid, and the solving of the Navier-Stokes equation group, under the small Reynolds number, the theoretical equation of the drag force of the Bingham thixotropy fluid flowing around a sphere has been deduced. The theoretical relationship between drag coefficient and Reynolds number has been derived. By use of the experimental data of rheological test of various slurries measured with viscometer and those of single sphere motion observed on the X-ray screeen, the above equations have been verified. The equations are in good agreement with the experimental data for various slurries. 展开更多

Barnes et al.defined thixotropy as“gradual decrease of viscosity under shear followed by a gradual recovery of the structure when the shear rate is removed”.The investigated pigment dispersions, with a gel-sol-gel conversion, show a decrease in viscosity under shear. After the shear rate is removed,a gradual recovery of the structure occurs with the rest time.It was found that the pigment dispersions follow the thixotropy definition. The systems with shear thinning flow behavior show start-up curves with maximum in experiments with shear rates from the shear thinning region,as a characteristic for thixotropy. After cessation of the shear,a gradual recovery of the structure is not observed,or the second part of the thixotropic definition is not fulfilled. The structure of the systems with plastic flow behavior as well does not recover. We presented a new, second, definition of thixotropy for non-gel-sol-gel systems—when a constant shear deformation is applied, the shear stress or viscosity passes through a maximum and then achieves a steady state value. After the shear deformation is stopped, the stress relaxation begins. The shear stress comes to a steady state value—the residual shear stress. The structure does not recover after cessation of the shear flow. 展开更多

Natural gas hydrates, intricate crystalline structures formed by water molecules and small gas molecules, have emerged as a significant and globally impactful clean energy resource. However, their commercial exploitation faces challenges, particularly operational disruptions caused by sand-related blockages.Understanding the rheological properties of hydrate slurry, especially in the presence of micron-sized sand particles,is imperative for ensuring the flow assurance of subsea hydrate exploitation. This study extensively investigates the rheological properties of sand-containing hydrate slurries. The findings reveal that these slurries exhibit non-Newtonian fluid characteristics, including yield stress, thixotropy, and shear-thinning behavior.Solid-like elastic features are observed in sand-containing hydrate slurries before yielding, transitioning to viscous behavior after yielding.Even with a minimal amount of sand, both static yield stress and yield strain experience substantial changes, correlating with the increase in sand concentration. The research conclusively establishes the thixotropic nature of sand-hydrate slurries, where the viscosity decay rate is directly influenced by the shear rate. These insights aim to contribute comprehensively to the development of effective flow assurance strategies, ensuring the safe and stable operation of subsea hydrate exploitation. 展开更多

The effect of electrolytes (NaCl and CaCl2) and polymers (CPAM and HPAM) on the thixotropy of Mg-Al-layered double hydroxide (LDHs)/kaolinite dispersions has been investigated. It was observed that the type of thixotropy in LDH/kaolinite dispersions may be affected by NaCl, but not by CaCl2 in range of concentration of interest. The type of thixotropy in LDH/kaolinite dispersion with R=0 transformed from positive thixotropy to complex thixotropy and at last positive thixotropy again with the concentration of NaC1 in range of 0.00-0.10 mol·L^-1; the type of thixotropy in LDHs/kaolinite dispersions with R = 0.25 transformed from complex thixotropy to positive thixotropy and then complex thixotropy again with the concentration of NaC1 in range of 0.00-0.10 mol·L^-. The type of thixotropy in LDH/kaolinite dispersion with R=0 may be not affected by cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) and hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM); but the LDHs/kaolinite dispersions with R=0.25 transformed from complex thixotropy to positive thixotropy with the both polymers concentration in range of interest, which indicated that the microstructure of the dispersion changed from weak folc sediments structure to steric network structure. 展开更多

The rheological properties of aqueous suspensions consisting of positively charged aluminum magnesium hydrotalcite-like compound (HTlc) and low-substituted cationic starch (LCS) were investigated. Special emphasis was placed on the thixotropic phenomenon. Thixotropic behavior was investigated by two thixotropic methods: thixotropic loop and oscillatory shear measurements. LCS molecules could be adsorbed onto HTlc particles due to the hydrogen bonding between ether groups or hydroxyl groups of LCS and hydroxyl groups of HTlc. The elastic dynamic response of the HTlc/LCS suspension increased with increasing mass ratio (R) of HTlc and a three-dimensional network structure could be formed in the suspension with higher R value. The thixotropic type of the HTlc/LCS suspension transformed from negative to positive and then to complex thixotropy when R changed from 0 to 0.5. By comparing between the thixotropic results obtained by thixotropic loop and oscillatory shear measurements, it was validated that the thixotropic loop for the suspension showing complex thixotropy had a crossover point. 展开更多

Cementing carbonate reservoirs is generally a difficult task. The so-called thixotropic cement slurry has gained considerable attention in this regard as it can help tofix some notable problems.More precisely,it can easilyfill the leakage layer;moreover, its gelling strength can grow rapidly when pumping stops, thereby increasing the resistance to gas channeling, effectively preventing this undesired phenomenon in many cases.High-temperature thixotropic cement slurry systems, however, are still in an early stage of development and additional research is needed to make them a viable option. In the present study, using a self-developed composite high-temperature thixotropic additive as a basis,it is shown that the compressive strength can be adjusted by tuning the proportion of silica sand, the high-temperature retarder, fluid loss additive and dispersant(compatible with the thixotropic additive).According to the tests, the developed high-temperature thixotropic cement slurry system has a 14 d compressive strength of 29.73 MPa at 150°C,and a thickening time of 330 min when the dosage of retarder is 2%.At the same time, the rheological property, water loss, permeability, water separation rate, and settlement stability of the cement slurry system meet the requirements of cementing construction. 展开更多

Effective thermal transport across solid-solid interfaces which is essential in thermal interface materials(TIMs),necessitates both optimal thixotropy and high thermal conductivity. The role of filler surface modification,a fundamental aspect of TIM fabrication,in the influence of these properties is not fully understood. This study employs the use of a silane coupling agent(SCA)to modify alumina, integrating experimental approaches with molecular dynamics simulations,to elucidate the interface effects on thixotropy and thermal conductivity in polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)-based TIMs.Our findings reveal that the variations of SCAs modify both interface binding energy and transition layer thickness. The interface binding energy restricts macromolecular segmental relaxation near the interface, hindering desirable thixotropy and bond line thickness. On the contrary, the thickness of the transition layer at the interface positively influences thermal conductivity, facilitating the transport of phonons between the polymer and filler.Consequently, selecting an optimal SCA allows a balance between traditionally conflicting goals of high thermal conductivity and minimal bond line thickness, achieving an impressively low interface thermal resistance of just 2.45-4.29 K·mm^(2)·W^(-1)at275.8 kPa. 展开更多

This study identified soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDS) of seismic origin from lacustrine sediments in the late Quaternary paleo-dammed lake at Tashkorgan, northeastern Pamir. The observed deformation structures include sand dykes, liquefied diapir and convolute structures, gravity induced SSDS, and thixotropic pillar and tabular structures. We conducted a preliminary study on the morphology, formation and trigger mechanisms of pillar and tabular structures formed by liquefaction of underlying coarse sand and thixotropy of the upper silty clay. The regional tectonic setting and distribution of lacustrine strata indicate that the most probable trigger for the SSDS in lacustrine sediments was seismic activity, with an approximate earthquake magnitude of M〉6.0; the potential seismogenic fault is the southern part of the Kongur normal fault extensional system. AMS ^4C dating results indicate that the SSDS were formed by seismic events occurring between 26050±100 yrBP and 22710±80 yrBP, implying intense fault activity in this region during the late Pleistocene. This study provides new evidence for understanding tectonic activity and regional geodynamics in western China. 展开更多

Waxy crude oil exhibits complex rheological behavior below the pour point temperature, such as viscoelasticity, yield stress, and thixotropy, owing to the formation of a three-dimensional spongelike interlock network structure. This viscoelasto-thixotropic behavior is an important rheologieal behavior of waxy crude oils, determining the flow recovery and safe restart of crude oil pipelines. Up to now, the thixotropic models for waxy crude have been all viscoplastic models, without considering the viscoelastic part before the yield point. In this work, based on analyzing the variation of the elastic stress and viscous stress in the Mujumbar model, a new viscoelasto-plastic model is proposed, whose shear stress is separated into an elastic component and a viscous component. The elastic stress is the product of the shear modulus and elastic strain; the shear modulus is proportional to the structural parameter. For the elastic strain, we followed the line of Zhu and his coauthors and assumed that it may be expressed by an algebraic equation. The model is validated by stepwise shear rate tests and hysteresis loop tests on Daqing and Zhongyuan waxy crude. The results show that the model's fitting and predictive capability is satisfactory. 展开更多

Molecular structures of polycarboxylate(PCE) superplasticizer significantly affect the rheological properties of cement paste. Consequently, we employed self-synthesized PCE copolymers with different carboxylic densities to investigate their influence on the rheological behavior of cement paste. Three typical rheological models were applied to analyze the rheological properties, including Power-law model, Bingham model as well as Herschel-Buikley model. In addition, the thixotropical performances of cement paste in the presence of PCE with different carboxylic densities were investigated. The results show that the carboxylic density of PCE greatly influences the dispersing performance of PCE superplasticizers. As carboxylic density increases, the dispersing capability of PCE improves, and P(PEG1-AA6) possesses the strongest dispersing capability, the initial fluidity and 1 h fluidity of cement paste are both the highest, and cement paste has the lowest viscosity and the smallest hysteresis loop. 展开更多

The results indicate that the solution's non-Newtonian property becomes more prominent with the increase in solution concentrations exhibiting the behavior of pseudo-plastic fluid. Besides, there is a critical concentration C-v (around 0.06 g/ml), beyond which the viscosity of the PAn/NMP solution takes a sudden increase. with temperature rising, both the viscosity and the thixotropy of the solution decrease, implying that there exist physical cross-linking interactions between the molecular chains in the solution. 展开更多
