A Critique of Eye-Tracking Approach in Translation Process Research

With the rapid growth of eye-tracking studies in translation process research, concomitant methodologicalproblems have become increasingly prominent. This paper starts with the discussion of the controversial “eye-mindassumption”, and then focuses on various threats to experimental validity in research design and problems witheye-tracking data filtering and analysis. It is hoped that this discussion would be beneficial to those who are now orwill be engaged in eye-tracking based translation studies.

Exploring Translation Process and Sociolinguistic Perspective:A Case Study of Figurative Speech

In a large sense,cultural factors interfere in the translation process:Social language is a part of the culture.Based on the light,this study aims at translation and sociolinguistic aspects through figurative speech.The analysis of the translation result from the college students of B-University in the translation class hints that the correlation between translation and cultural interferences should be educated.The result shows that most of the college students put importance on the readability of the translation,less paying attention to the value of figurative speech in context.

A Study of Idiom Translation in Bonsall’s The Red Chamber Dream

This paper combines quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze the translation characteristics of idioms in B.S.Bonsall’s full English translation of The Red Chamber Dream,starting from George Steiner’s fourfold hermeneutic motion:trust,aggression,incorporation,and restitution.Through data statistics and conclusion analysis,I concluded that the translation strategies of idioms in Bonsall’s English translation are mainly literal translations,supplemented by free translations,and literal translations combined with free translations,which also provides some enlightenment for the English translation of Chinese classics.

Standardization of the strategy translation process,procedural fairness in budgeting and firm performance

This paper studies the effect of the standardization of the strategy translation process on procedural fairness in budgeting and firm performance.Analysis of250 valid questionnaires using a structural equation model shows that the strategy translation process(STP)affects firm performance not only directly but also indirectly,through budget participation and procedural fairness in budgeting.This study enriches the literature on the economic consequences of strategic performance measurement systems and expands research on procedural fairness in budgeting and the factors influencing firm performance.This study shows that the standard translation and implementation of strategy will decrease managers’bias in the target-setting process,thus increasing manager’s sense of fairness in the budget process and ultimately improving firm performance.

Multi-function radar emitter identification based on stochastic syntax-directed translation schema

To cope with the problem of emitter identification caused by the radar words＇ uncertainty of measured multi-function radar emitters, this paper proposes a new identification method based on stochastic syntax-directed translation schema（SSDTS）. This method, which is deduced from the syntactic modeling of multi-function radars, considers the probabilities of radar phrases appearance in different radar modes as well as the probabilities of radar word errors occurrence in different radar phrases. It concludes that the proposed method can not only correct the defective radar words by using the stochastic translation schema, but also identify the real radar phrases and working modes of measured emitters concurrently. Furthermore, a number of simulations are presented to demonstrate the identification capability and adaptability of the SSDTS algorithm.The results show that even under the condition of the defective radar words distorted by noise,the proposed algorithm can infer the phrases, work modes and types of measured emitters correctly.

Investigating Disfluencies in E-C Sight Translation

Spoken language is marked by para-verbal and non-verbal dimensions,such as silent pause,hesitation,and intonation.Fluency is considered as an essential parameter for evaluating the quality of oral output.Sight translation is a hybrid form of written translation and oral interpreting;however,fluency in sight translation is an underresearched topic.This paper examines the disfluencies in the sight translation of professional and novice translators working from English to Chinese.It adopted a statistical approach to compare the silent pauses and hesitation fillers in the delivery of professional and student participants.According to the independent samples t-test results,the differences were significant in the occurrence and ratio of hesitation between professional and student participants.It can be inferred that professional translators are more apt at coping tactics,such as pausing for several seconds,rather than inserting hesitation fillers unconsciously.Furthermore,the corpus-assisted analysis suggested a higher lexical density among professional participants,followed by the think-aloud approach,which revealed the causes for disfluencies.By drawing upon the Speech Production Theory,the paper found six most influential factors:vocabulary,emotion,syntactic category,speaking habit,lexical ambiguity,and topical difficulty.It is hoped that translation and interpreting studies will not be confined to linguistic dimensions.Paralinguistic signs should have their places in the domain of translatology.Semiotics of translation,which views translation as a pure semiotic act,thereby provides a valued perspective for translation and interpreting studies.
