Vibration and noise aspects play a relevant role in the lifetime and comfort of urban areas and their resi-dents.Among the different sources, the one coming from the rail transit system will play a central concern in the following years due to its sustainability.Ground-borne vibration and noise assessment as well as techniques to mitigate them become key elements of the environmental impact and the global enlargement planned for the railway industry. This paper aims to describe and compare the different mitigation systems existing and reported in liter-ature through a comprehensive state of the art analysis providing the performance of each measure.First,an introduction to the ground-borne vibration and noise gen-erated from the wheel-rail contact and its propagation through the transmission path is presented. Then, the impact and the different ways of evaluating and assessing these effects are presented, and the insertion loss indicator is introduced.Next, the different mitigation measures at different levels(vehicle, track, transmission path and receiver)are discussed by describing their possible appli-cation and their efficiency in terms of insertion loss. Finally,a summary with inputs of how it is possible to address the future of mitigation systems is reported. 展开更多

The problems of ice-induced vibration have been noticed and concerned since the 1960s, but it has not been well resolved. One reason is that the dynamic interaction between ice and structure is so complicated that practical ice force model has not been developed. The recent full-scale tests conducted on jacket platforms in the Bohai Sea presented that ice could cause intense vibrations which endanger the facilities on the deck and make discomfort for the crew. In this paper, the strategy of mitigation of ice-induced offshore structure vibration is discussed. Based on field observations and understanding of the interaction between ice and structure, the absorption mitigation method to suppress ice-induced vibration is presented. The numerical simulations were conducted for a simplified model of platform attached with a Tuned Mass Danlper (TMD) under ice force function and ice force time history. The simulation results show that TMD can fa- vorably reduce ice-induced vibrations, therefore, it can be considered to be an alternative approach to utilize. Finally, the application possibilities of utilizing TMDs on other miniature offshore structures in ice-covered areas of marginal oil fields are discussed. 展开更多

The model combined by cable, girder and damper is founded to study the influence of girder vibration on cable damper 's performance of a cable-stayed bridge. The complex mode method and nondimensionalization are used to analyze the relationship between the girder's parameters and the performance of cable-related damper. The results indicate that the performance of cable-related damper will decrease greatly when the girder frequencies are near the frequencies of cable. The smaller absolute displacement of damper's piston caused by the very small vibration phase shift of girder and cable is the physical cause of the negative impact mentioned above. 展开更多

After nearly a decade of application and investigation, a motion amplification device with viscous dampers for energy dissipation has been recognized as an effective solution to mitigate wind or seismic excitation, especially for stiff structural systems. As a result of compensation of amplified motion, it has been proved that the efficiency of viscous damper largely depends on the motion amplification device configuration, particularly for device stiflhess. In this paper, a "scissor-jack" type of motion amplification device, called a "toggle brace damper" system, is studied. It is demonstrated that the efficiency of such a device reflected by its amplification factor is not merely a function of its geometric configuration, but is highly dependent on the support elements' stiffness as well, similar to the mechanism of a leverage arm. Accordingly, a mathematical model in terms of complex modulus of the viscous damper with consideration of the support brace's stiffness is established. The results indicate that the efficiency of the motion amplification device with viscous dampers significantly depends on the stiffness of the support elements. Other parameters, such as toggle brace configuration and damping values of the viscous damper, are studied and compared. As an application example, numerical analyses are conducted to study the dynamic performance of a 39-story office tower installed with toggle brace dampers constructed on soft soil in a reclaimed area, under a combined effect of the vortex shedding of an adjacent existing 52-story building and earthquakes. The results show that viscous dampers with a motion amplification system using a properly designed toggle brace device proved to be an effective solution to alleviate the external excitations. 展开更多
