The alpine meadow ecosystem accounts for 27%of the total area of the Tibetan Plateau and is also one of the most important vegetation types. The Dangxiong alpine meadow ecosystem, located in the south-central part of the Tibetan Plateau,is a typical example. To understand the carbon and water fluxes, water use efficiency(WUE),and their responses to future climate change for the alpine meadow ecosystem in the Dangxiong area, two parameter estimation methods, the Model-independent Parameter Estimation(PEST)and the Dynamic Dimensions Search(DDS),were used to optimize the Biome-BGC model. Then, the gross primary productivity(GPP)and evapotranspiration(ET)were simulated. The results show that the DDS parameter calibration method has a better performance. The annual GPP and ET show an increasing trend, while the WUE shows a decreasing trend.Meanwhile,ET and GPP reach their peaks in July and August, respectively, and WUE shows a“dual-peak”pattern,reaching peaks in May and November.Furthermore, according to the simulation results for the next nearly 100 years, the ensemble average GPP and ET exhibit a significant increasing trend, and the growth rate under the SSP5–8.5 scenario is greater than that under the SSP2–4.5 scenario.WUE shows an increasing trend under the SSP2–4.5 scenario and a significant increasing trend under the SSP5–8.5 scenario. This study has important scientific significance for carbon and water cycle prediction and vegetation ecological protection on the Tibetan Plateau. 展开更多

Green hydrogen produced by water electrolysis combined with renewable energy is a promising alternative to fossil fuels due to its high energy density with zero-carbon emissions.Among water electrolysis technologies, the anion exchange membrane(AEM) water electrolysis has gained intensive attention and is considered as the next-generation emerging technology due to its potential advantages, such as the use of low-cost non-noble metal catalysts, the relatively mature stack assembly process, etc. However, the AEM water electrolyzer is still in the early development stage of the kW-level stack, which is mainly attributed to severe performance decay caused by the core component,i.e.,AEM.Here,the review comprehensively presents the recent progress of advanced AEM from the view of the performance of water electrolysis cells.Herein, fundamental principles and critical components of AEM water electrolyzers are introduced, and work conditions of AEM water electrolyzers and AEM performance improvement strategies are discussed. The challenges and perspectives are also analyzed. 展开更多

Precipitation projections over the Tibetan Plateau(TP)show diversity among existing studies, partly due to model uncertainty. How to develop a reliable projection remains inconclusive. Here, based on the IPCC AR6–assessed likely range of equilibrium climate sensitivity(ECS)and the climatological precipitation performance, the authors constrain the CMIP6(phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project)model projection of summer precipitation and water availability over the TP.The best estimates of precipitation changes are 0.24,0.25,and 0.45 mm d^(−1)(5.9%,6.1%,and 11.2%)under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway(SSP)scenarios of SSP1–2.6,SSP2–4.5,and SSP5–8.5 from 2050–2099 relative to 1965–2014,respectively.The corresponding constrained projections of water availability measured by precipitation minus evaporation(P–E)are 0.10,0.09,and 0.22 mm d^(−1)(5.7%,4.9%,and 13.2%),respectively.The increase of precipitation and P–E projected by the high-ECS models, whose ECS values are higher than the upper limit of the likely range, are about 1.7 times larger than those estimated by constrained projections.Spatially, there is a larger increase in precipitation and P–E over the eastern TP,while the western part shows a relatively weak difference in precipitation and a drier trend in P–E.The wetter TP projected by the high-ECS models resulted from both an approximately 1.2–1.4 times stronger hydrological sensitivity and additional warming of 0.6℃–1.2℃ under all three scenarios during 2050–2099.This study emphasizes that selecting climate models with climate sensitivity within the likely range is crucial to reducing the uncertainty in the projection of TP precipitation and water availability changes. 展开更多

Atmospheric deposition of nitrogen(N)plays a significant role in shaping the structure and functioning of various terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. However, the magnitude of N deposition on grassland ecosystems in Central Asia still remains highly uncertain. In this study,a multi-data approach was adopted to analyze the distribution and amplitude of N deposition effects in Central Asia from 1979 to 2014 using a process-based denitrification decomposition(DNDC)model. Results showed that total vegetation carbon(C)in Central Asia was 0.35(±0.09)Pg C/a and the averaged water stress index(WSI)was 0.20(±0.02)for the whole area.Increasing N deposition led to an increase in the vegetation C of 65.56(±83.03)Tg C and slightly decreased water stress in Central Asia.Findings of this study will expand both our understanding and predictive capacity of C characteristics under future increases in N deposition, and also serve as a valuable reference for decision-making regarding water resources management and climate change mitigation in arid and semi-arid areas globally. 展开更多

Understanding the dynamics of surface water area and their drivers is crucial for human survival and ecosystem stability in inland arid and semi-arid areas. This study took Gansu Province,China,a typical area with complex terrain and variable climate,as the research subject.Based on Google Earth Engine,we used Landsat data and the Open-surface Water Detection Method with Enhanced Impurity Control method to monitor the spatiotemporal dynamics of surface water area in Gansu Province from 1985 to 2022,and quantitatively analyzed the main causes of regional differences in surface water area. The findings revealed that surface water area in Gansu Province expanded by 406.88 km2 from 1985 to 2022.Seasonal surface water area exhibited significant fluctuations, while permanent surface water area showed a steady increase.Notably, terrestrial water storage exhibited a trend of first decreasing and then increasing, correlated with the dynamics of surface water area.Climate change and human activities jointly affected surface hydrological processes, with the impact of climate change being slightly higher than that of human activities.Spatially, climate change affected the'source'of surface water to a greater extent, while human activities tended to affect the'destination'of surface water.Challenges of surface water resources faced by inland arid and semi-arid areas like Gansu Province are multifaceted. Therefore,we summarized the surface hydrology patterns typical in inland arid and semi-arid areas and tailored surface water'supply-demand'balance strategies. The study not only sheds light on the dynamics of surface water area in Gansu Province, but also offers valuable insights for ecological protection and surface water resource management in inland arid and semi-arid areas facing water scarcity. 展开更多

The construction of dams for intercepting and storing water has altered surface water distributions, landsea water exchanges, and the load response of the solid Earth. The lack of accurate estimation of reservoir properties through the land surface and hydrological models can lead to water storage simulation and extraction errors. This impact is particularly evident in many artificial reservoirs in China. The study aims to comprehensively assess the spatiotemporal distribution and trends of water storage in medium and large reservoirs(MLRs) in Chinese mainland during 1950-2016, and to investigate the gravity, displacement, and strain effects induced by the reservoir mass concentration using the load elasticity theory. In addition, the impoundment contributions of MLRs to the relative sea level changes were assessed using a sea-level equation. The results show impoundment increases in the MLRs during1950-2016, particularly in the Yangtze River(Changjiang) and southern basins, causing significant elastic load effects in the surrounding areas of the reservoirs and increasing the relative sea level in China's offshore. However, long-term groundwater estimation trends are overestimated and underestimated in the Yangtze River and southwestern basins, respectively, due to the neglect of the MLRs impacts or the uncertainty of the hydrological model's output(e.g., soil moisture, etc.). The construction of MLRs may reduce the water mass input from land to the ocean, thus slowing global sea level rise. The results of the impact of human activities on the regional water cycle provide important references and data support for improving the integration of hydrological models, evaluating Earth's viscoelastic responses under longterm reservoir storage, enhancing in-situ and satellite geodetic measurements, and identifying the main factors driving sea level changes. 展开更多

Hydrological models are crucial for characterizing large-scale water quantity variations and correcting GNSS reference station vertical displacements. We evaluated the robustness of multiple models, such as the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS),the Famine Early Warning System Network Land Data Assimilation System (FLDAS),the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP),and the WaterGAP Global Hydrology Model (WGHM).Inter-model and outer comparisons with Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinate time series, satellite gravity field Mascon solutions, and Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC) guide our assessment. Results confirm WGHM's 26% greater effectiveness in correcting nonlinear variations in GPS height time series compared to NCEP.In the Amazon River Basin,a 5-month lag between FLDAS,GLDAS,and satellite gravity results is observed. In eastern Asia and Australia,NCEP's Terrestrial Water Storage Changes (TWSC)-derived surface displacements correlate differently with precipitation compared to other models.Three combined hydrological models (H-VCE,H-EWM,and H-CVM) utilizing Variance Component Estimation (VCE),Entropy Weight Method (EWM),and Coefficient of Variation Method (CVM) are formulated.Correcting nonlinear variations with combined models enhances global GPS height scatter by 15%-17%.Correlation with precipitation increases by 25%-30%,and with satellite gravity, rises from 0.2 to 0.8 at maximum. The combined model eliminates time lag in the Amazon Basin TWSC analysis, exhibiting a four times higher signal-to-noise ratio than single models.H-VCE demonstrates the highest accuracy. In summary, the combined hydrological model minimizes discrepancies among individual models, significantly improving accuracy for monitoring large-scale TWSC. 展开更多

Widespread changes to forested watersheds affected by the mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) epidemic across western North America raised concerns about the effects of this climate-induced disturbance on drinking water and natural resources. Effective communication and knowledge exchange across scientists and stakeholders (i.e., drinking water managers) is essential for constructively responding to such landscape scale disturbances, providing improved adaptive capacity through knowledge sharing. An assessment of stakeholder knowledge levels, information needs, primary concerns, and suggested communication strategies were conducted via an online elicitation survey and World Science Café workshops. Knowledge levels, assessed via a survey of local water managers and experts, were relatively low with approximately half of the respondents reporting little to no knowledge of the effects of mountain pine beetle on drinking water quality and quantity, thereby indicating limited knowledge exchange between scientists and drinking water stakeholders. Increased accessibility and dissemination of research findings pertinent to the mountain pine beetle epidemic’s effects on drinking water quality and quantity is necessary for natural resource management. Recommendations for improved communication among scientists and drinking water stakeholders in particular and forest health in general include dispersal of non-academic research summaries, information exchange through existing media and community resources, demonstration projects, and information clearinghouses. This information provides a better understanding of the challenges, concerns, and first-hand experience of stakeholders of a landscape disturbance issue to apply this knowledge to enhance land management practice and how researchers on this overall project enhanced science communication efforts. 展开更多

Louisiana possesses a bountiful groundwater reserve, an invaluable and noteworthy asset. Despite extensive literature on climate change implications in Louisiana, there is limited academic research focused on its effects on the state’s water resources. Therefore, this study addresses that gap by using GIS to spatially analyze water usage trends from 1960 to 2014, to examine climate-induced consequences and determine the susceptibility of water utilities’ functions and facilities. This study utilized various online sources to gather data on water withdrawals, temperature trends, and climate impacts in Louisiana. Water usage data from the Lower Mississippi Gulf-Water Science Centre and temperature trends from Meteoblue covering 2023 were also analyzed to assess the state’s water resource challenges. The water withdrawal data was linked to a shapefile within ArcMap, using graduated color symbology to visualize regional variations in water usage. This method highlighted significant water withdrawals across Louisiana from 1960 to 2014, clearly illustrating the differences between regions. Based on the data sources, the results show that groundwater levels in Louisiana have steadily declined over time. For instance, water levels in the Jasper Aquifer in St. Tammany dropped from approximately 125 feet to 50 feet, while levels in the Sparta Aquifer in Lincoln fell from 30 feet to −25 feet. Similarly, the Chicot Aquifer in Acadia experienced a decline from −25 feet to −50 feet. These reductions indicate a concerning trend of groundwater depletion, exacerbated by high temperatures and current drought conditions affecting roughly 73% of the state. To ensure sustainable water management in Louisiana, investing in water storage, transfer infrastructure, and conservation practices are needed to protect surface and groundwater sources. More so, the state’s Reservoir Priority and Development Program (RPDP), which includes the construction of reservoirs, is a key initiative that can address water scarcity, improve water supply, and enhance long-term water security. 展开更多

Understanding the impact of climate change on water resources is important for developing regional adaptive water management strategies. This study investigated the impact of climate change on water resources in the Yarmouk River Basin(YRB) of Jordan by analyzing the historical trends and future projections of temperature, precipitation, and streamflow. Simple linear regression was used to analyze temperature and precipitation trends from 1989 to 2017 at Irbid, Mafraq, and Samar stations. The Statistical Downscaling Model(SDSM) was applied to predict changes in temperature and precipitation from 2018 to 2100 under three Representative Concentration Pathway(RCP) scenarios(i.e., RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5), and the Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT) was utilized to estimate their potential impact on streamflow at Addasiyia station. Analysis of data from 1989 to 2017 revealed that mean maximum and minimum temperatures increased at all stations, with average rises of 1.62℃ and 1.39℃, respectively. The precipitation trends varied across all stations, showing a significant increase at Mafraq station, an insignificant increase at Irbid station, and an insignificant decrease at Samar station. Historical analysis of streamflow data revealed a decreasing trend with a slope of –0.168. Significant increases in both mean minimum and mean maximum temperatures across all stations suggested that evaporation is the dominant process within the basin, leading to reduced streamflow. Under the RCP scenarios, projections indicated that mean maximum temperatures will increase by 0.32℃ to 1.52℃, while precipitation will decrease by 8.5% to 43.0% throughout the 21st century. Future streamflow projections indicated reductions in streamflow ranging from 8.7% to 84.8% over the same period. The mathematical model results showed a 39.4% reduction in streamflow by 2050, nearly double the SWAT model's estimate under RCP8.5 scenario. This research provides novel insights into the regional impact of climate change on water resources, emphasizing the urgent need to address these environmental challenges to ensure a sustainable water supply in Jordan. 展开更多

As a typical region with high water demand for agricultural production, understanding the spatiotemporal surface water changes in Northeast China is critical for water resources management and sustainable development. However, the long-term variation characteristics of surface water of different water body types in Northeast China remain rarely explored. This study investigated how surface water bodies of different types(e.g.,lake,reservoir,river,coastal aquaculture, marsh wetland, ephemeral water) changed during1999–2020 in Northeast China based on various remote sensing-based datasets. The results showed that surface water in Northeast China grew dramatically in the past two decades, with an equivalent area increasing from 24 394 km^(2) in 1999 to 34 595 km^(2) in 2020.The surge of ephemeral water is the primary driver of surface water expansion, which could ascribe to shifted precipitation pattern.Marsh wetlands, rivers, and reservoirs experienced a similar trend, with an approximate 20% increase at the interdecadal scale.By contrast, coastal aquacultures and natural lakes remain relatively stable. This study is expected to provide a more comprehensive investigation of the surface water variability in Northeast China and has important practical significance for the scientific management of different types of surface water. 展开更多

Central Asia consists of the former Soviet Republics,Kazakhstan,Kyrgyz Republic,Tajikistan,Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The region’s climate is continental, mostly semi-arid to arid.Agriculture is a significant part of the region’s economy.By its nature of intensive water use, agriculture is extremely vulnerable to climate change.Population growth and irrigation development have significantly increased the demand for water in the region.Major climate change issues include melting glaciers and a shrinking snowpack, which are the foundation of the region’s water resources, and a changing precipitation regime. Most glaciers are located in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, leading to transboundary water resource issues.Summer already has extremely high temperatures.Analyses indicate that Central Asia has been warming and precipitation might be increasing. The warming is expected to increase, but its spatial and temporal distribution depends upon specific global scenarios.Projections of future precipitation show significant uncertainties in type, amount, and distribution.Regional Hydroclimate Projects(RHPs)are an approach to studying these issues.Initial steps to develop an RHP began in 2021 with a widely distributed online survey about these climate issues. It was followed up with an online workshop and then,in 2023,an in-person workshop, held in Tashkent,Uzbekistan.Priorities for the Global Energy and Water Exchanges(GEWEX)project for the region include both observations and modeling,as well as development of better and additional precipitation observations, all of which are topics for the next workshop.A well-designed RHP should lead to reductions in critical climate uncertainties in policy-relevant timeframes that can influence decisions on necessary investments in climate adaptation. 展开更多

The increasing demand for hydrogen energy to address environmental issues and achieve carbon neutrality has elevated interest in green hydrogen production, which does not rely on fossil fuels.Among various hydrogen production technologies, anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer(AEMWE)has emerged as a next-generation technology known for its high hydrogen production efficiency and its ability to use non-metal catalysts. However, this technology faces significant challenges, particularly in terms of the membrane durability and low ionic conductivity. To address these challenges, research efforts have focused on developing membranes with a new backbone structure and anion exchange groups to enhance durability and ionic conductivity.Notably, the super-acid-catalyzed condensation(SACC)synthesis method stands out due to its user convenience, the ability to create high molecular weight(MW)polymers, and the use of oxygen-tolerant organic catalysts.Although the synthesis of anion exchange membranes(AEMs)using the SACC method began in 2015,and despite growing interest in this synthesis approach, there remains a scarcity of review papers focusing on AEMs synthesized using the SACC method. The review covers the basics of SACC synthesis, presents various polymers synthesized using this method, and summarizes the development of these polymers, particularly their building blocks including aryl, ketone, and anion exchange groups. We systematically describe the effects of changes in the molecular structure of each polymer component, conducted by various research groups,on the mechanical properties, conductivity, and operational stability of the membrane. This review will provide insights into the development of AEMs with superior performance and operational stability suitable for water electrolysis applications. 展开更多

The increasing temperature in the Yellow River Basin has led to a rapid rise in the melting level height,at a rate of 5.98 m yr^(-1)during the cold season, which further contributes to the transition from snowfall to rainfall patterns.Between 1979 and 2020,there has been a decrease in snowfall in the Yellow River Basin at a rate of-3.03 mm dec^(-1),while rainfall has been increasing at a rate of 1.00 mm dec^(-1).Consequently,the snowfall-to-rainfall ratio(SRR)has decreased.Snowfall directly replenishes terrestrial water storage(TWS)in solid form until it melts, while rainfall is rapidly lost through runoff and evaporation,in addition to infiltrating underground or remaining on the surface. Therefore, the decreasing SRR accelerates the depletion of water resources.According to the surface water balance equation, the reduction in precipitation and runoff, along with an increase in evaporation, results in a decrease in TWS during the cold season within the Yellow River Basin. In addition to climate change, human activities, considering the region's dense population and extensive agricultural land, also accelerate the decline of TWS.Notably, irrigation accounts for the largest proportion of water withdrawals in the Yellow River Basin(71.8%)and primarily occurs during the warm season(especially from June to August). The impact of human activities and climate change on the water cycle requires further in-depth research. 展开更多

The sink strength of developing ovaries in wheat determines the grain weight potential. The period from booting to the grain setting stage is critical for ovary growth and development and potential sink capacity determination. However, the underlying regulatory mechanism during this period by which the wheat plant balances and coordinates the floret number and ovary/grain weight under water stress has not been clarified. Therefore,we designed two irrigation treatments of W0(no seasonal irrigation)and W1(additional 75 mm of irrigation at the jointing stage)and analyzed the responses of the ovary/grain weight to water stress at the phenotypic, metabolomic, and transcriptomic levels. The results showed that the W0 irrigation treatment reduced the soil water content, plant height, and green area of the flag leaf, thus reducing grain number, especially for the inferior grains. However,it improved the grain weight of the superior and inferior grains as well as average grain weight at maturity, while the average ovary/grain weight and volume during–3 to 10 days after anthesis(DAA)also increased.Transcriptomic analysis indicated that the genes involved in both sucrose metabolism and phytohormone signal transduction were prominently accelerated by the W0 treatment, accompanied by greater enzymatic activities of soluble acid invertase(SAI)and sucrose synthase(Sus)and elevated abscisic acid(ABA)and indole-3-acetic acid(IAA)levels. Thus, the sucrose content decreased, while the glucose and fructose contents increased. In addition, several TaTPP genes(especially TaTPP-6)were down-regulated and the IAA biosynthesis genes TaTAR1 and TaTAR2 were up-regulated under the W0 treatment before anthesis, which further increased the IAA level.Collectively, water stress reduced the growth of vegetative organs and eliminated most of the inferior grains, but increased the ABA and IAA levels of the surviving ovaries/grains,promoting the enzymatic activity of Sus and degrading sucrose into glucose and fructose. As a result, the strong sucrose utilization ability, the enhanced enzymatic activity of SAI and the ABA-and IAA-mediated signaling jointly increased the weight and volume of the surviving ovaries/grains,and ultimately achieved the tradeoff between ovary/grain weight and number in wheat under water stress. 展开更多

The concentration of the heavy isotope of hydrogen, deuterium (D), is not routinely measured in (human) medical laboratory tests, even though an increasing number of papers prove the pivotal role of D in tumor growth, cell cycle regulation, cell metabolism, and aging. Data from a prospective phase 2 clinical study and numerous retrospective clinical studies proved the anticancer effect of deuterium depletion achieved by replacing the regular water intake with deuterium-depleted water (DDW). In previous studies, the changes in serum D concentration of DDW-consuming patients were followed using blood samples and mass spectrometry, which was invasive, costly, and time-consuming. As future clinical trials will also require a follow-up of internal D level and the patient’s compliance, a new sampling device and procedure was developed based on condensing the exhaled breath water vapor and measuring its D content using a liquid water isotope laser analyzer. Test results showed that the device provided accurate, reliable, and reproducible data. According to the data, the internal D level in a person consuming normal water was stable. In contrast, exclusive consumption of DDW for several days resulted in a gradual decrease of D concentration in exhaled breath condensate (EBC), which was proportional to the D concentration of DDW. These data confirm that orally applied DDW equilibrates with the person’s water pool quickly, leading to a reduced internal D level reflected in the D content of EBC. 展开更多

From 1900 to 2010, temperatures in the Midwest rose by an average of 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit, which would also lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Precipitation is also expected to increase due to increased storm activity and changes in regional weather patterns. This paper explores the impact of these changes on urban and agricultural areas. In urban areas such as the city of Chicago, runoff from the increasing impervious surface areas poses challenges to the drainage system, and agriculture areas are challenged by soil erosion, nutrient loss, and fewer planting days due to excessive rainfall. Sustainable solutions such as no-till agriculture and the creation of grassland zones are discussed. Using historical data, recent climate studies and projections, the paper Outlines ways to enhance the Midwest’s ecology and resilience to climate change. 展开更多

The Canada Basin is the largest basin in the Arctic Ocean. Its unique physical features have the highest concentration of nutrients being found in the subsurface layer, referred to as the subsurface nutrient maximum layer(SNM).Under climate change in the Arctic, the SNM is an essential material base for primary productivity.However,long-term trends of nutrient variations and dominant factors related to nutrient levels in the SNM are still unclear. In this study,we analyzed the SNM variations and main influencing factors of the Canada Basin based on the Global Ocean Data Analysis Project Version 2 between 1990 and 2015 and the Chinese Arctic Research Expedition between 2010 and 2016.We found that the nutrient concentrations in the SNM were relatively stable for decades[average concentrations of nitrate, phosphate, and silicate were(13.6±2.4)μmol/L,(1.8±0.2)μmol/L,and(31.5±5.7)μmol/L,respectively].Nutrient reservoirs were dominated by physical processes.Inflow and outflow water of the SNM contributed about 60.4%and-50.2%to the nutrient stocks, respectively, while particle deposition and remineralization in the Canada Basin contributed approximately one-third to the nutrient stocks.Nitrogen fixation and denitrification in the Canada Basin had no substantial impact on nutrient stocks. The overall stabilization of the SNM over the past few decades implied that the SNM would not substantially affect short term primary productivity.Understanding the long-term trends and dominant factors of reservoirs in the SNM will provide useful insights into the changing Canada Basin ecosystem. 展开更多

Osmotic water alters the physicochemical properties and internal structures of limestone. This issue is particularly critical in tunnel construction across mountainous regions with aquifers, where pressurized groundwater can destabilize the limestone-based surrounding rock. Thus, systematic research into the physicochemical properties and pore structure changes in the limestone under pressurized water is essential.Additionally,it is essential to develop an interpretable mathematical model to accurately depict how pressurized osmotic water weakens limestone. In this research,a specialized device was designed to simulate the process of osmotic laminar flow within limestone. Then, four main tests were conducted:mass loss, acoustic emission(AE),mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP),and fluorescence analysis.Experimental results gained from tests led to the development of a“Particle-pore throat-water film”model.Proposed model explains water-induced physicochemical and pore changes in limestone under osmotic pressure and reveals evolutionary mechanisms as pressure increases.Based on experimental results and model,we found that osmotic pressure not only alters limestone composition but also affects pore throats larger than 0.1μm.Furthermore,osmotic pressure expands pore throats, enhancing pore structure uniformity, interconnectivity, and permeability. These effects are observed at a threshold of 7.5 MPa,where cohesive forces within the mineral lattice are surpassed, leading to the breakdown of erosion-resistant layer and a significant increase in hydrochemical erosion. 展开更多

Attaining a decarbonized and sustainable energy system, which is the core solution to global energy issues,is accessible through the development of hydrogen energy.Proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzers(PEMWEs)are promising devices for hydrogen production, given their high efficiency, rapid responsiveness, and compactness.Bipolar plates account for a relatively high percentage of the total cost and weight compared with other components of PEMWEs.Thus, optimization of their design may accelerate the promotion of PEMWEs.This paper reviews the advances in materials and flow-field design for bipolar plates.First, the working conditions of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs)and PEMWEs are compared, including reaction direction, operating temperature,pressure,input/output,and potential. Then, the current research status of bipolar-plate substrates and surface coatings is summarized, and some typical channel-rib flow fields and porous flow fields are presented.Furthermore, the effects of materials on mass and heat transfer and the possibility of reducing corrosion by improving the flow field structure are explored. Finally, this review discusses the potential directions of the development of bipolar-plate design, including material fabrication,flow-field geometry optimization using threedimensional printing, and surface-coating composition optimization based on computational materials science. 展开更多
