“Tasks”versus“Disciplines”:The Comprehensive Surveys of Natural Resources by the Chinese Academy of Sciences,and the Politics of Science Policy in the People’s Republic of China

As soon as the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)was founded by the new government of the People’s Republic of China in 1949,the principles of“linking theory with practice”and“conducting research to serve the people”set the framework for its scientific studies.How to balance their obligations to facilitate national economic construction with their desires to advance disciplinary scientific developments posed a knotty problem that frustrated those who organized and engaged in scientific research across the country,and in the CAS in particular.Against this background,the slogan“let tasks lead disciplines”was proposed as an effective solution.However,how exactly to put this into practice became a pressing issue,as CAS scientists and scholars debated the relationship between tasks and advances within scientific disciplines.This paper examines these debates as they were carried out in the case of the comprehensive surveys of natural resources organized by the CAS,focusing especially on different understandings of the relationship between“tasks”and“disciplines”within the CAS in the early 1960s,and examining the impact and legacy of“letting tasks lead disciplinary developments,”with possible lessons for the formulation of scientific plans today.

A DELIBERATION ON SCIENCE DEVELOPMENT IN CHINA AND ON THE READJUSTMENT OF CONSTITUTIONAL DISCIPLINES IN THE CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

The CAS, as a national comprehensive research and development (R&D) center for natural science and high technology with numerous researchers of a high quality in almost all disciplines, plays a decisive role in the development of this country’s science and technology. Based on the trend of China’s development in the period of its Ninth Five-Year Plan and in the next century, this article analyzes the trends of science and technology of China in combination with the current readjustment in the constitution of science disciplines in the CAS.

Chinese Education Philosophy of "Truth, Kindness, and Aesthetics Combination" manifests in the research on Chinese education from aesthetics perspective. It aims at the "narrow and limited view" of "not the general aesthetics, but the artistic beauty only", and it aims at biased opinion of "the interest saying", "the fine arts saying", "the esthetic sense saying" on aesthetics. Culture Self- Consciousness in Transmission of Chinese Philosophy from the Perspective of English Globalization -- Taking the Belt and Road Initiative for Example

The Belt and Road Initiative contains the aspiration of Chinese nation to pursue ideological freedom and desire of strengthening international exchanges and cooperation. This paper takes the Belt and Road Initiative for example,emphasizing the interpretation of the inheritance and development of Chinese culture so as to study the importance of Culture Self-Consciousness in Chinese Philosophy,in the context of English globalization. Development of Chinese Traditional Philosophy and Ancient Flower Arrangement Art

Traditional philosophical thoughts have different connotations in different historical periods in China. Affected by it, the flower arrangement art has produced different artistic styles: religious flower of the Han, Wei and Six Dynasties, courtyard flower in the Sui and Tang dynasties, concept flower and mental imagery flower in the Song and Yuan dynasties, and new concept flower, literati flower, pictographic flower and scenery description flower in the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The “Belt & Road” Initiative and Its Chinese Traditional Philosophical Root

This article analyzes the relations between Chinese traditional philosophy and the “Belt & Road” Initiative. The idea of “Belt & Road” Initiative has a deep root in Chinese traditional philosophy. Silk Road has become a symbol of peace and friendship in Chinese culture and it always brings back the good memories in Chinese people about the prosperity of trade and economy. The both Silk Roads not only witnessed the exchange and communication between China and western areas to China, but also the most prosperous time in Chinese history. China proposes the “Belt & Road” Initiative with the purpose of constructing a more prosperous world by the jointing efforts of the nations all over the world. Because of the barriers and misconceptions in transcultural and cross-cultural activities, people from different cultures have difficulty in understanding the “Belt & Road” Initiative with its founding meanings. This paper aims to offer clear image about the background, context, and core points of the “Belt & Road” Initiative. In fact, the “Belt & Road” Initiative is natural reflection of Chinese traditional philosophy. If the essence of Chinese traditional philosophy, for example,“harmony but diversity”, the “peace and war” as well as the balance of “Yin” and “Yang” could be understood well, it would be much easier to have a correct understanding about the concept of the “Belt & Road” Initiative.

The Construction of a New Translation Ethics from the Perspective of Chinese Philosophy

As a cross-linguistic,cross-cultural,and cross-social activity,translation is affected by cultural moralities.Since the ethical standard of faithfulness has been abandoned by theories of cultural criticism and the power of translators’manipulation has been constantly exaggerated,the study of translation ethics is an effective remedy for a current dilemma in translation studies.It is a common phenomenon for some translators to erase the linguistic and cultural differences of Chinese literature by catering to target readers’reception.Social ethics is the foundation of a nation’s translation ethics,which means that thoughts from the Western world may not be suitable for the current situation in China.Learning from concepts of Chinese philosophy including harmony in diversity,seeking common ground while reserving differences,and honesty to formulate a new translation ethics will surely restrain translators’subjectivity within appropriate limits and develop world culture in more harmonious fashion.

The Dilemma of Philosophy and the Prospect of Chinese Philosophy

Reflections on disciplinary development of traditional Chinese medicine universities in the“post-epidemic era”

In this coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)epidemic prevention and control battle,Chinese medicine has demonstrated the unique advantages of Chinese medicine and has made important contributions to global epidemic prevention and control.At the same time,the epidemic is also a concentrated test of the medical education system of Chinese medicine.There are insufficient public health and integrated Chinese and western medicine talents in the discipline development of Chinese medicine colleges,and the ability of Chinese medicine to prevent and treat infectious diseases needs to be improved.Infectious disease discipline system is not perfect and many other problems.This article puts forward new thoughts and suggestions on the problems and challenges existing in the discipline development of traditional Chinese medicine schools,and provides countermeasures and references for the next discipline development of traditional Chinese medicine schools in the“post-epidemic era”.

The Outsider Perspective: Classical Chinese Philosophy in the Narrative Framework of the European Enlightenment

The purpose of this article is to enhance the understanding of how Classical Chinese Philosophy has been interpreted and transferred by Enlightenment thinkers into the narrative framework of European philosophy as a far-reaching source of ideas and inspiration with a driving force for promoting modern European social change. We examine outsider perspectives within the context of Enlightenment thinking that contributed to advances in the cross-cultural understanding of how Chinese stories could be disseminated in the framework of East-West dialogue.

Chinese Residents’Philosophy and Religion in Contemporary China and North America

The cultural dimension of sustainability as the fourth pillar of the overall sustainable development framework encompasses both tangible and intangible cultures.In this study,tangible culture refers to the home environments of Chinese residents in China and North America,while intangible culture refers to their faiths and belief systems,in other words,their philosophy and religion,reflected(or not)in their home environments.The paper argues that Chinese philosophy and religion have historically contributed to Chinese people’s environmental ethics and their health and happiness.Set within this context,the paper presents the author’s two empirical research findings on Chinese residents’philosophy and religion in contemporary China and North America.Quantitative and qualitative data were collected by asking Chinese residents the same research question in the 2007-2008 onsite survey and follow-up interviews in Beijing and Suzhou of China,and the 2013 online survey and follow-up interviews in the US and Canada.The findings show a significantly higher percentage of ethnic Chinese in North America holds traditional Chinese faiths than those in China,though Western cultural infiltration is also happening to them.Nevertheless,due to the limited number of participants,the findings may only be indicative.

Further Discussion of the Fundamental Differences between Chinese and Western Philosophy

In the context of the problem of the“fundamental differences”between Chinese and Western philosophy,it is essential to investigate the basic system on which the entirety of Western philosophy operates and the unique way it has developed within this system,so that concrete observation can help deepen understanding.The observation involves the issues of what metaphysics is;“transcendence”;the fourfold distinction in the history of Western metaphysics;Christianity as Platonism;and the“Onto-Theo-Logik”mechanism in metaphysics.In a general sense,there can be no metaphysics where there is no division or opposition between the supersensuous and the sensory worlds.Where the“Onto-Theo-Logik”mechanism of Western metaphysics fails to work or has no chance of working,the field is one in which Chinese philosophy should make active moves and undertake development.The divisions arising from this context essentially mark the fundamental difference between Chinese and Western philosophy.When it comes down to it,it is these differences that determine the differences in the nature,structure,and direction of Chinese and Western philosophy.

The scientific nature of traditional Chinese medicine in the post-modern era

There is a growing need to understand traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)in modern scientific terms.TCM possesses the dual attributes of science and the humanities.At present,medical science and technology are progressing,while humanistic ethics are being neglected.TCM embodies the interaction between imagery and conceptual thinking,which can be explained from the following three aspects:imagery as an internal driving force for cultural rejuvenation,return to the true self and guarding of the root of life,and cosmology(harmony between man and nature).In the post-modern era,“people-oriented”medical values will lead to integrations between science and humanities,holism and reductionism,imagery-based thinking and conceptual thinking,systematic research and descriptive research,and evidence-based medicine and narrative medicine.

Edward H. Hume's Contributions to Introducing Chinese Medicine to the West

Known as the founder of Xiangya School of Medicine and Xiangya Hospital,Edward H.Hume is frequently praised for his pioneering work in bringing Western medicine to China.Some researchers have investigated his efforts in introducing Chinese medicine to the West;less known is the role that he later played as a lecturer on medical history at Johns Hopkins University.This paper presents an exhaustive review of Hume’s English writings on Chinese medicine,thus revealing what Hume did to introduce Chinese medicine to Western academia,and how he pioneered research into Chinese medicine from cultural and philosophical perspectives.

The Importance of the Classics in the Transmission of Chinese Medicine to the West
