Deep learning-based recognition of stained tongue coating images

Objective To build a dataset encompassing a large number of stained tongue coating images and process it using deep learning to automatically recognize stained tongue coating images.Methods A total of 1001 images of stained tongue coating from healthy students at Hunan University of Chinese Medicine and 1007 images of pathological(non-stained)tongue coat-ing from hospitalized patients at The First Hospital of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine withlungcancer;diabetes;andhypertensionwerecollected.Thetongueimageswererandomi-zed into the training;validation;and testing datasets in a 7:2:1 ratio.A deep learning model was constructed using the ResNet50 for recognizing stained tongue coating in the training and validation datasets.The training period was 90 epochs.The model’s performance was evaluated by its accuracy;loss curve;recall;F1 score;confusion matrix;receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve;and precision-recall(PR)curve in the tasks of predicting stained tongue coating images in the testing dataset.The accuracy of the deep learning model was compared with that of attending physicians of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).Results The training results showed that after 90 epochs;the model presented an excellent classification performance.The loss curve and accuracy were stable;showing no signs of overfitting.The model achieved an accuracy;recall;and F1 score of 92%;91%;and 92%;re-spectively.The confusion matrix revealed an accuracy of 92%for the model and 69%for TCM practitioners.The areas under the ROC and PR curves were 0.97 and 0.95;respectively.Conclusion The deep learning model constructed using ResNet50 can effectively recognize stained coating images with greater accuracy than visual inspection of TCM practitioners.This model has the potential to assist doctors in identifying false tongue coating and prevent-ing misdiagnosis.

The enlightenment of artificial intelligence large-scale model on the research of intelligent eye diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine

Eye diagnosis is a method for inspecting systemic diseases and syndromes by observing the eyes.With the development of intelligent diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM);artificial intelligence(AI)can improve the accuracy and efficiency of eye diagnosis.However;the research on intelligent eye diagnosis still faces many challenges;including the lack of standardized and precisely labeled data;multi-modal information analysis;and artificial in-telligence models for syndrome differentiation.The widespread application of AI models in medicine provides new insights and opportunities for the research of eye diagnosis intelli-gence.This study elaborates on the three key technologies of AI models in the intelligent ap-plication of TCM eye diagnosis;and explores the implications for the research of eye diagno-sis intelligence.First;a database concerning eye diagnosis was established based on self-su-pervised learning so as to solve the issues related to the lack of standardized and precisely la-beled data.Next;the cross-modal understanding and generation of deep neural network models to address the problem of lacking multi-modal information analysis.Last;the build-ing of data-driven models for eye diagnosis to tackle the issue of the absence of syndrome dif-ferentiation models.In summary;research on intelligent eye diagnosis has great potential to be applied the surge of AI model applications.

Treatment of 140 cerebral palsied children with a combined method based on traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)and western medicine

Objective:To observe and evaluate a method that is effective and practical for treatment of cerebral palsied(CP)children in China.Method:The patient's age and disease type and individual specific conditions were considered in choosingtherapy methods accordingly:Chinese herbs,acupuncture,auricnlar seed pressure,point finger pressing,massage,orthopedichand manipulation,physiotherapy,occupational therapy,language therapy,etc.Meanwhile we created a new CP treatment modelthat combines hospitalized treatment with family therapy.Results:The majority of CP patients improved greatly in motor andsocial adaptation capacities after treatment.Wilcoxon paired rank sum test analysis showed that there were significant differencesbetween the data before and after treatment(P<0.01).Conclusion:This combined therapy method,based on traditional Chinesemedicine and western medicine plus family supplemental therapy,is an effective and practical treatment strategy for CP children inChina.

Analysis of 278 Cases of Clinical Application of Western Medicine with Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome Differentiation

Since the beginning of the Western Learning, modern medicine has developed rapidly in China, and the integration of Chinese and western medicine has become inevitable. Since Zhang Xichun's "Medicine in the West", using traditional Chinese medicine theory to guide the practice of western medicine, through long-term clinical diagnosis, we gradually realized the advantages of applying western medicine according to TCM syndrome differentiation. Therefore, 278 patients from the Second People's Hospital of Gansu Province from July 2015 to December 2017 were enrolled in the relevant departments of the Department of Internal Medicine. On the basis of routine treatment, TCM was obtained through inspection, inquiry, listening and smelling, palpation and pulse-taking. The syndrome type is based on the medicinal properties, menstruation and ef?cacy of more than ten kinds of western medicines, so that they can reach Chinese medicine[1]. Artificial intelligence and its application for cardiovascular diseases in Chinese medicine

Cardiovascular diseases(CVDs)are major disease burdens with high mortality worldwide.Early prediction of cardiovascular events can reduce the incidence of acute myocardial infarction and decrease the mortality rates of patients with CVDs.The pathological mechanisms and multiple factors involved in CVDs are complex;thus,traditional data analysis is insufficient and inefficient to manage multidimensional data for the risk prediction of CVDs and heart attacks,medical image interpretations,therapeutic decision-making,and disease prognosis prediction.Meanwhile,traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)has been widely used for treating CVDs.TCM offers unique theoretical and practical applications in the diagnosis and treatment of CVDs.Big data have been generated to investigate the scientific basis of TCM diagnostic methods.TCM formulae contain multiple herbal items.Elucidating the complicated interactions between the active compounds and network modulations requires advanced data-analysis capability.Recent progress in artificial intelligence(AI)technology has allowed these challenges to be resolved,which significantly facilitates the development of integrative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for CVDs and the understanding of the therapeutic principles of TCM formulae.Herein,we briefly introduce the basic concept and current progress of AI and machine learning(ML)technology,and summarize the applications of advanced AI and ML for the diagnosis and treatment of CVDs.Furthermore,we review the progress of AI and ML technology for investigating the scientific basis of TCM diagnosis and treatment for CVDs.We expect the application of AI and ML technology to promote synergy between western medicine and TCM,which can then boost the development of integrative medicine for the diagnosis and treatment of CVDs.

The Eastern Cultural Signature of Traditional Chinese Medicine: Empirical Evidence and Theoretical Perspectives

Background: Holistic thinking, which is rooted in Eastern culture, is assumed to be the core of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Recently, such holistic thinking has been proposed to be applicable to Western medicine practices for alleviating serious side effects;however, the obscure and often ill-defined terms of TCM, such as qi, yin yang, and wuxing, pose considerable obstacles for further understanding TCM. In the present study, we explored whether and how TCM is actually related to the scientific construct of holistic thinking, to elucidate the particular cultural signature of TCM. Methods: A random sample of 101 college students majoring in TCM and 93 non-medical college students was recruited for the study. Two psychological scales—the Chinese Holistic Thinking Scale and the TCM Competence Scale were used respectively to measure the holistic thinking and participants’ ability to apply the TCM in practice. Results: We found that individuals who thought more holistically were better at applying TCM to modern medical problems. Interestingly, TCM was associated with holistic thinking in both TCM and non-medical students, suggesting that this association is intrinsic. Further exploration revealed that the association and variability facets of Eastern holistic thinking—which emphasize that the world is interconnected and ever-changing, respectively—significantly accounted for the individual differences in competence in utilizing TCM in practice. Conclusion: In short, our study provides the first empirical evidence linking TCM to the Eastern holistic thinking style, which not only deepens the understanding of TCM from a scientific perspective but also promotes dialogue between TCM and Western medicine for building safer and more effective health care systems.

The Origin of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Thinking on Chinese Medicine Development

Although the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has developed a profound theory system and a fame of outstanding advantage in curative effect, it seems that the TCM is not quite adaptable to the deveiopment and requirement of the modern society.A principle of “Adopting the advanced part of Western medicine to serve the TCM" should be adhered to for the traditional Chinese medicine. First, TCM should strive for a consensus of TCM theory which focuses on the guiding principles of “diagnosis and treatment based on an overall analysis of the illness and the patient’s condition"and “the opposite principle of five internal organs".Among these principles, “keeping relative balance of three internal systems"is a valuable guidance of the diagnosis and treatment theory. Secondly, macroscopic should be integrated with microscopic, totality with parts,phenomenology with materialism.A dialectical law should be applied to guide analysis. In treatment, adjustment and balance are basic principles.It is necessary not only prepare the medicine in advance accoding to the predicted disease of the year,but also adopt methods to restrict disease in advance.Basides, TCM dose type should be ameliorated in order to meet the needs of society.

基于双阶段元学习的小样本中医舌色域自适应分类方法

舌色是中医(TCM)望诊最关注的诊察特征之一。在实际应用中,通过一台设备采集到的舌象数据训练得到的舌色分类模型应用于另一台设备时,由于舌象数据分布特性不一致,分类性能往往急剧下降。为此,该文提出一种基于双阶段元学习的小样本中医舌色域自适应分类方法。首先,设计了一种双阶段元学习训练策略,从源域有标注样本中提取域不变特征,并利用目标域的少量有标注数据对网络模型进行微调,使得模型可以快速适应目标域的新样本特性,提高舌色分类模型的泛化能力并克服过拟合。接下来,提出了一种渐进高质量伪标签生成方法,利用训练好的模型对目标域的未标注样本进行预测,从中挑选出置信度高的预测结果作为伪标签,逐步生成高质量的伪标签。最后,利用这些高质量的伪标签,结合目标域的有标注数据对模型进行训练,得到舌色分类模型。考虑到伪标签中含有噪声问题,采用了对比正则化函数,可以有效抑制噪声样本在训练过程中产生的负面影响,提升目标域舌色分类准确率。在两个自建中医舌色分类数据集上的实验结果表明,在目标域仅提供20张有标注样本的情况下,舌色分类准确率达到了91.3%,与目标域有监督的分类性能仅差2.05%。

在综合医院中医规培中加强中医经典教学的探索

中医住院医师规范化培训(以下简称“规培”)是中国住院知师培训的重要组成部分,同时也是医教协同深化中医学人才培养改革的关键环节,更是加强中医临床人才队伍建设的有效途径和加快构建具有中国特色医学人才培养体系的重要举措。中医经典理论是中医学术的灵魂,是数千年来中医实践的经验结晶,是培养中医临床思维,提升中医临床技能的重要途径。此文分析综合医院中医规培教学中经典教学的不足,提出相应对策,探讨加强中医规培经典教学、培养学员中医临床思维的方法。

动脉粥样硬化中医药研究领域近十年国家自然科学基金项目申请和资助情况分析

文章系统梳理和归纳近十年(2014—2023年)中医学和中西医结合学领域内动脉粥样硬化在国家自然科学基金申请和资助的项目主要特点。结果显示,项目多围绕相关的生物学机制、治则治法、信号通路及作用靶点开展设计与研究,10年内两个领域动脉粥样硬化研究共申请1486项,资助199项,资助率13.39%,与整个中医药领域近十年的平均资助率(13.31%)基本持平。近十年来随着关注动脉粥样硬化的中医药研究者逐年增多,申请量逐年大幅度增加,使得资助率从2014年的24.68%明显下降至2023年的9.44%。此外也存在中医理论研究不够深入、研究方案设计存在缺陷、动物模型制备缺少评价标准、忽略申请书撰写中的细节、前期工作基础不足以及科研诚信等问题。

孙桂芝病证结合辨证在肿瘤治疗中的应用

病证结合是孙桂芝教授治疗肿瘤病学术思想的重要组成部分,把辨证与辨病有机地结合起来,进行综合诊治,既照顾到整体,又注意到局部;辨证为先还是辨病为先在临床诊疗中要根据实际情况而定,二者互补。特别是现代科学技术的发展弥补了中医诊疗方面的不足,辨病治疗成为中医治疗学的重要部分。孙桂芝教授临证始终强调辨证与辨病紧密相连,中西手段并用,诊断疾病现代仪器和中医四诊联合,治疗上病证相参结合,攻补兼施,标本兼治,既要兼顾全局,也要重视细节。

基于微信平台的中医内科学PCBL教学模式应用研究

探讨基于微信平台的以问题为中心(PBL)教学方法与以案例为基础(CBL)的教学方法联合使用(即PCBL教学模式)在中医内科学专业本科生教学中的应用效果。选取北京中医药大学2019级京华传承班及2020级京华传承班中医学专业本科学生共64名,分为观察组和对照组,观察组采用基于微信平台的PCBL教学模式,对照组采用传统教学方法,对2组基础理论知识和综合运用能力进行考核,并以问卷调查形式评价教学效果。结果表明,观察组基础理论知识及综合运用能力的考核成绩均优于对照组(P<0.05),观察组问卷调查满意度高于对照组(P<0.05)。基于微信平台的PCBL教学模式可激发学生学习的兴趣和主动性,有助于本科生临床思维能力的培养及教师教学水平提升。

中药监管科学:发展中的新兴融合科学

中药监管科学(Traditional Chinese Medicine Rugulatory Science)作为我国新兴的、亟待发展的中西医交叉融合科学,不仅是监管科学(Rugulatory Science)作为国际前沿科学在中药监管领域的全新应用场景,更是一种根植于传统中医药学土壤的中西医融合研究新模式和原创性科学思维方式。中药监管科学具有融合科学(Convergence Science)的问题导向性、多学科交叉、覆盖创新价值链、多元主体协同参与等特点。发展中药监管科学意味着中药监管科技创新朝向融合科学发生根本性变革,将有助于探索建立既符合中医药特点,又体现中西医融通的中药审评审批体系,以期获得中国式现代化中药监管领域的重大科技突破。
