It possesses many medicinal attributes, including curative properties against infectious dermatoses. This study was carried out to evaluate the phytochemical profile of the crude ethanolic extract of the plant leaves and its fractions as well as their antimicrobial activities. The phytochemical profile was performed using high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Additionally, the phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu spectrophotometric and the aluminum trichloride methods. Antimicrobial activity was tested using disc diffusion and microdilution methods. The presence of flavonoids, tannins, sterols, and triterpenes was revealed. GC-MS detected twelve compounds main compounds consisting of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids and phenolic and terpenoid compounds among twenty-seven components. HPLC also detected high contents of phenolic acids and flavonoids. The most abundant triterpene and sterols were ursolic acid (around 43.14 g/100g DW, 13.9 g/100g dry weight (DW), and 0.68 g/100g DW) in the crude ethanolic extract of leaves (FeLi), hexane fraction (FHLi) and dichloromethane fraction (FDLi), respectively and, β-sitosterol in FeLi (56.7 mg/100g DW), FHLi (10.55 g/100g DW), FDLi (106.1 mg/100g DW) and butanol fraction (FBLi) (357.4 mg/100g DW). Among the flavonoids, rutin = 3.24 g/100g and quercetin = 0.63 g/100g in the ethanolic extract, rutin = 15.73 g/100g in the dichloromethane fraction, and rutin = 0.23 g/100g) in the aqueous fraction;and among phenolic compounds, caffeic acid (37.65 g/100g DW) and vanillic acid (22.70 g/100g DW) were the most important in the ethyl acetate fraction (FAeLi). All organic fractions exhibited interesting antibacterial and antifungal activities against the tested strains, with the best activity recorded with the dichloromethane and ethyl acetate fractions. The leaf extracts’ phytochemical profile and antimicrobial activity support the use of Lawsonia inermis against infectious skin diseases.展开更多

Despite the increasing acceptance of medicinal plant use in combination with conventional antituberculosis drugs in treatment of tuberculosis (TB) in Uganda, there is paucity of knowledge on their combination effect. Aim: This research aimed to determine combination activity of standard antituberculosis drugs with extracts of Zanthoxylum leprieurii Guill. & Perr. and Rubia cordifolia L., the two common antituberculosis medicinal plants in Uganda, against pansensitive (H37Rv) and multi-drug resistant (MDR) Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. Materials and Methods: Two reference MTB strains (H37Rv and MDR strain) were inoculated on Middlebrook 7H11 medium containing a combination of standard antituberculosis drugs and methanol extracts of Z. leprieurii and R. cordifolia at varying concentrations. The number of colonies on the plates was observed and counted weekly for up to 8 weeks. In vitro combination activity was determined using proportion method. Mean percentage inhibition was calculated for the reduction of number of colonies on drug-extract combination medium in relation to drug-extract-free control medium. Results: Drug-extract combinations showed good combination activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains when compared with individual standard anti-TB drugs. This was more exhibited against MDR strain. There was however a reduction in percentage inhibition when extracts were combined with ethambutol and streptomycin against H37Rv strain. Conclusions: Zanthoxylum leprieurii and Rubia cordifolia in combination with standard anti-TB drugs exhibited increased in vitro activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, especially MDR-TB strain. This justifies the local use of these plants in traditional treatment of tuberculosis especially in resistant cases in Uganda.展开更多

Older people are generally considered dependent on others as they grow older. The purpose of this article is to explore the entrepreneurship activities of Nepalese older adults. Data for this study were collected from the project Help Age International (HAI) implemented in Nepal. Qualitative data observations and interviews were used to collect data. The findings of this study show the formation of the Older People’s Association (OPA) has supported many older people to participate outside the home in various social activities. Moreover, regular deposits through OPAs offer little help. OPAs support older people in their need of financial support to implement minor entrepreneurship. Older people who received support were pleased and were actively involved in their activities and also regularly deposited money in them. Subsequently, older people’s participation in social activities has increased and also helped to lower elderly abuse, loneliness, and depression. Local governments should promote such activities which will help with healthy aging.展开更多

In the current study, the effects of ultrasound treatment (37°C, 5 min), pasteurization (90°C, 5 min), and their combination on quality parameters, including pH, total soluble solids (TSSs), titratable acidity (TA), color values (L*, a*, b*), ascorbic acid (AA), total phenolic content (TPC), and antioxidant activity (DPPH), of pineapple juice from ripe and overripe pineapples were assessed. Color values (L*), ascorbic acid (AA), total phenolic content (TPC), and DPPH radical scavenging activity in all juice samples that were sonicated alone and in combination with pasteurization improved significantly (p and color value (a* and b*) decreased in comparison to the control. Whereas pH and acidity did not change significantly (p < 0.05). 文摘Despite substantial efforts in developing high-performance catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR),the persistent challenge lies in the high onset overpotential of the ORR,and the effect of the elec-trolyte solution cannot be ignored.Consequently,we have systematically investigated the impact of adsorbate species and concentration,as well as solution pH,on the ORR activity on Pt(111)and Pt(poly)electrodes. The results all tend to establish a linear quantitative relationship between the onset potential for ORR and the adsorption equilibrium potential of the adsorbate. This finding indicates the decisive role of adsorbates in the onset potential for ORR,suggesting that the adsorption potential of adsorbates can serve as an intuitive criterion for ORR activity.Additional support for this conclusion is derived from experimental results obtained from the oxygen evolution reaction on Pt(poly)with different adsorbate species and from the hydrogen evolution reaction on Pt(111)with iodine adsorption. We further propose both an empirical equation for the onset potential for ORR and the concept of a potential-regulated adsor-bate shielding effect to elucidate the influence of adsorbates on ORR activity. This study provides new insights into the high onset overpotential of the ORR and offers potential strategies for predicting and enhancingORRactivity inthefuture.

文摘The micro-sprinkler irrigation mulched(MSM)has been suggested as a novel water-saving approach in con-trolled environment agriculture. However, the effects of microbial community structure and enzyme activity in the rhizosphere soil on crop growth under MSM remain unclear. This study conducted a randomized experimen-tal design using greenhouse tomatoes to investigate changes in bacterial community structure and enzyme activity in rhizosphere soil under different irrigation frequencies(F)and amounts(I)of MSM.Thefindings revealed that with the increase of F or I,The total count of soil bacteria in tomatoesfirst rose and then fell in terms of Opera-tional Taxonomic Units(OTUs)classification.Compared to other F,the most abundance of nitrogen and phos-phorus metabolism genes and enzyme activities were observed with a 5-day F.Moreover, the diversity of soil bacterial community structure initially rose before eventually declining with the increase of the I.Applying 1.00 Epan(cumulative evaporation of a 20 cm standard pan)under MSM helped boost the abundance of nitrogen and phosphorus metabolism functional genes in soil bacteria, ensuring higher enzyme activities related to nitro-gen,carbon,and phosphorus metabolism in the rhizosphere soil of tomatoes.Tomatoes’yield initially rose before eventually declining with the increase in F or I,whereas I had a more significant effect on yield.A 1.00%increase in I yielded a minimum of 39.24%increase in tomato yield. The study showed a positive correlation between soil bacterial community, soil enzyme activity, and greenhouse tomato yield under MSM.Considering the results comprehensively, the combined irrigation mode of F of 5 d and I of 1.00 Epan was recommended for greenhouse tomatoes under MSM.This conclusion provides theoretical support for water-saving practices and yield improve-ment in facility agriculture, especially tomato cultivation.

文摘Traditional selection of combustion catalysis is time-consuming and labor-intensive.Theoretical calculation is expected to resolve this problem. The adsorption energy of HMX and O atoms on 13 metal oxides was calculated using DMol3,since HMX and O are key substances in decomposition process. And the relationship between the adsorption energy of HMX,O on metal oxides(TiO_(2),Al_(2)O_(3),PbO,CuO,Fe_(2)O_(3),Co_(3)O_(4),Bi_(2)O_(3),NiO)and experimental T30 values(time required for the decomposition depth of HMX to reach 30%)was depicted as volcano plot. Thus, the T30 values of other metal oxides was predicted based on their adsorption energy on volcano plot and validated by previous experimental data.Further, the adsorption energy of HMX on ZrO_(2)and MnO_(2)was predicted based on the linear relationship between surface energy and adsorption energy, and T30 values were estimated based on volcano plot. The apparent activation energy data of HMX/MgO,HMX/SnO_(2),HMX/ZrO_(2),and HMX/MnO_(2)obtained from DSC experiments are basically consistent with our predicted T30 values, indicating that it is feasible to predict the catalytic activity based on the adsorption calculation, and it is expected that these simple structural properties can predict adsorption energy to reduce the large quantities of computation and experiment cost.

文摘Spinel cobalt oxide(Co_(3)O_(4)),consisting of tetrahedral Co^(2+)(CoTd)and octahedral Co^(3+)(CoOh),is considered as promising earth-abundant electrocatalyst for chlorine evolution reaction(CER).Identifying the catalytic contribution of geometric Co site in the electrocatalytic CER plays a pivotal role to precisely modulate electronic configuration of active Co sites to boost CER.Herein, combining density functional theory calculations and experiment results assisted with operando analysis,we found that the Co_(Oh) site acts as the main active site for CER in spinel Co_(3)O_(4),which shows better Cl^(-)adsorption and more moderate intermediate adsorption toward CER than CoTd site, and does not undergo redox transition under CER condition at applied potentials.Guided by above findings, the oxygen vacancies were further introduced into the Co_(3)O_(4) to precisely manipulate the electronic configuration of Co_(Oh) to boost Cl^(-)adsorption and optimize the reaction path of CER and thus to enhance the intrinsic CER activity significantly. Our work figures out the importance of geometric configuration dependent CER activity, shedding light on the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts from geometric configuration optimization at the atomic level.
文摘Lawsonia inermis is a hairless plant growing in various regions of North Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and the Middle East. The leaf extracts’ phytochemical profile and antimicrobial activity support the use of Lawsonia inermis against infectious skin diseases.
文摘Introduction: Resistance to antituberculosis drugs and adverse drug reactions remain the leading causes of tuberculosis therapeutic failure globally. This justifies the local use of these plants in traditional treatment of tuberculosis especially in resistant cases in Uganda.

文摘[Objectives]This study was conducted to investigate the effects of piperidine derivatives on the proliferation and apoptosis of tumor cells(Hele).[Methods]The target end product(piperidine derivative)was synthesized through a series of organic reactions. The MTT assay was adopted to detect the effect of piperidine derivative on the proliferation activity of Hele cells. The ROS fluorescence probe method was used to detect the changes of reactive oxygen species. The JC-1 method was applied to detect the changes of MMP in Hele cells.Flow cytometry was adopted to detect the apoptosis of Hele cells.[Results]The cell survival rates were 70.84%,65.46%and 54.48%when the drug concentration was 100,110 and 120μmol/L,respectively.When the drug concentration increased to 120μmol/L,the cell survival rate decreased by nearly half. The fluorescence intensity of active oxygen in the control group was 1,and when the drug concentrations were 100,110 and 120μmol/L,the fluorescence intensity of active oxygen was,respectively,1.315,1.478 and 1.677,which were higher than that in the control group. The red/green fluorescence intensity of the MMP control group was 1.819,and that of drug groups was,respectively,1.643,1.164 and 0.665,which were lower than that of the control group. The apoptosis rates were 10.79%,22.91%and 38.54%at the drug concentrations of 100,110 and 120μmol/L,respectively,showing a concentration dependent effect. The results showed that the piperidine derivative could inhibit the proliferation of Hele cells and induce apoptosis, which was positively correlated with the concentration.[Conclusions]This study provides theoretical basis and reference for the anti-tumor research of piperidine.
文摘Aging is a natural lifelong process ending in death. Many older people are living in poverty. Local governments should promote such activities which will help with healthy aging.

文摘This paper attempts to understand the Pt-like catalytic activity of transition metal carbide Ta4C_(3) for IRR(I_(3)^(-)reduction reaction)based on the correlation of adsorption energy to d-band center(εd).Ta4C_(3) was prepared by carbothermal reduction method with a template. Its photoelectrochemical properties were investigated as a CE(counter electrode)in DSSC(dye-sensitized solar cell). Its surface electronic structures, including DOS(density of state)andεd,and adsorption energy were computed by first-principle DFT(density functional theory). In TMC(transition metal carbide)Ta4C_(3),the interaction between Ta and C atoms makes the d-band of Ta broaden and results in the downward shift of itsεd.A moderate absorption energy corresponding to theεd is achieved, which is the nature of the Pt-like catalytic activity of Ta4C_(3).Appropriate change of adsorption energy by adjustingεd is a promising strategy to improve catalytic activity. This work is of great significance to the fundamental and application researches.

文摘A key feature that distinguishes cancer cells from all other cells is their capability to spread throughout the body.Although how cancer cells collectively migrate by following molecular rules which influence the state of cell-cell adhesion contacts has been comprehensively formulated, the impact of physical interactions on cell spreading remains less understood.Cumulative effects of physical interactions exist as the interplay between various physical parameters such as(1)tissue surface tension,(2)viscoelasticity caused by collective cell migration,and(3)solid stress accumulated in the cell aggregate core region. This review aims to point out the role of these physical parameters in cancer cell spreading by considering and comparing the rearrangement of various mono-cultured cancer and epithelial model systems such as the fusion of two cell aggregates. While epithelial cells undergo volumetric cell rearrangement driven by the tissue surface tension, which directs cell movement from the surface to the core region of two-aggregate systems, cancer cells rather perform surface cell rearrangement.Cancer cells migrate toward the surface of the two-aggregate system driven by the solid stress while the surface tension is significantly reduced. The solid stress, accumulated in the core region of the two-aggregate system,is capable of suppressing the movement of epithelial cells that can undergo the jamming state transition;however, this stress enhances the movement of cancer cells. We have focused here on the multi-scale rheological modeling approaches that aimed at reproducing and understanding these biological systems.

文摘The main objective of our study has been to determine the role of deadwood in the shaping of the amount of soil organic matter fractions in mountain forest soils. For this purpose,a climosequence approach comprising north(N)and south(S)exposure along the altitudinal gradient(600,800,1000 and 1200 m a.s.l.)was set up.By comparing the properties of decomposing deadwood and those of the soils located directly beneath the decaying wood we drew conclusions about the role of deadwood in the shaping of soil organic matter fractions and soil carbon storage in different climate conditions. The basic properties, enzymatic activity and fractions of soil organic matter(SOM)were determined in deadwood and affected directly by the components released from decaying wood.Heavily decomposed deadwood impacts soil organic matter stabilization more strongly than the less decayed deadwood and the light fraction of SOM is more sensitive to deadwood effects than the heavy fraction regardless of the location in the altitude gradient.Increase in SOM mineral-associated fraction C content is more pronounced in soils under the influence of deadwood located in lower locations of warmer exposure.Nutrients released from decaying wood stimulate the enzymatic activity of soils that are within the range of deadwood influence.

文摘Dihydrochelerythrine(DHCHE)is an isoquinoline compound, which has distinct antifungal activity and can induce apoptosis. The antifungal activity of DHCHE against five rice pathogenic fungi was studied in vitro. At the concentration of 7.5 mg/L,DHCHE exhibited the highest efficacy among tested compounds in inhibiting mycelium growth, with an inhibition rate of 68.8%in Ustilaginoidea virens, which was approximately 2.4 times of that of validamycin(28.7%).After exposure to DHCHE,transmission electron micrographs revealed spores showed incomplete organelles, malformed cell walls and nuclear membranes,as well as irregular lipid spheres.Reactive oxygen species accumulation in treated spores was markedly higher than that in control spores.DHCHE induced cell damage increased in a dose-dependent manner,as indicated by the decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential and initiation of apoptosis. The differences of expression levels of Fip1,ACP1,PMS2 and COX13 that are important for oxidative phosphorylation and mismatch repair pathway were significant, which may be some of the reasons for the induction of apoptosis in DHCHE-treated U.virens.The protein levels of Fip1,ACP1,PMS2 and COX13 agreed with protein fold change ratio from parallel reaction monitoring Gene Ontology terms and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway of differentially expressed proteins were further analyzed. These findings will help to elucidate the mechanisms associated with antifungal and pro-apoptotic effects of DHCHE on U.virens, thereby aiding the potential development of novel pesticides.
文摘It has become necessary to assess how food processing methods affect qualitative qualities due to the increased consumer awareness of the health benefits of various nutrients in food. Pasteurization significantly (p , but sonicated samples significantly (p quality parameters and antioxidant activity, notably in ripe juice. Overall, pasteurization degraded these liquids but sonication, either alone or in combination with it, was advantageous for preserving their quality by retaining nutrients.

文摘{1012¯}twins were introduced into the magnesium(Mg)plate AZ31 via pre-rolling along its transverse direction. The plates, both with and without the pre-induced{1012¯}twins,were subjected to uniaxial tension along different directions.Using crystal plasticity modeling,we found that the strengthening effect of the pre-induced{1012¯}twins on the macroscopic flow stress primarily arised from the increased slip resistance caused by the boundaries, rather than the orientation hardening due to the twinning reorientation(although the latter did make its contribution in some specific loading directions).Besides, the pre-existing{1012¯}twins were found,by both experiments and simulation,to promote the activity of prismatic and pyramidal<c+a>in the parent matrix of the material.Further analysis showed that the enhanced non-basal slip activity is related to the{1012¯}twin boundaries’low micro Hall-Petch slope ratios of non-basal slips to basal slip. With the critical resolved shear stress(CRSS)obtained from crystal plasticity modeling and the orientation data from EBSD,a probability-based slip transfer model was proposed. The model predicts higher slip transfer probabilities and thus lower strain concentration tendencies at{1012¯}twin boundaries than that at grain boundaries, which agrees with the experimental observation that the strain localization was primarily associated with the latter. The present findings are helpful scientifically,in deepening our understanding of how the pre-induced{1012¯}twins affect the strength and slip activity of Mg alloys, and technologically,in guiding the design of the pre-strain protocol of Mg alloys.
