In the computational process of very fast transient over-voltage (VFTO), it is essen-tial to find an accurate model for a gas insulated substation. The arcing model of the disconnector is particularly important. The general arcing model is not able to give a good description of the arc development process. In this paper, based on the physical process of arcing and existing arc models (the exponential time-varying resistance model and the segmental arcing models), a dy- namic arcing model is proposed, which is divided into two stages before and after the zero crossing. The dynamic arcing model combines hyperbola time-varying resistance and the Mayr model to describe the dynamic process of arcing. The present paper creates an arc model blockset upon the Matlab/Simulink software platform. Moreover for a specific 1100 kV station, VFTO is simulated in detail based on different arcing models. It is demonstrated that the dynamic arcing model can describe the physical arc process precisely and is useful for improving the accuracy of VFTO simulations. 展开更多

To simulate the process of electrode operation, a dynamic model describing the electrode system of three-phase electric arc furnace was developed. This new model can be divided into three submodels in terms of the practical situation. They are the power supply system model the electric arc model and the hydraulic actuator system model. According to the basic circuit theory, the power supply system model where the high voltage transmission circuit and mutual inductances were considered, was set up. The electric arc model, which was novel for the electrode control, served as the electrical load and was connected to the power supply system model. The hydraulic actuator system model consists of the proportional valve part that is modeled to capture the dead-zone nonlinear characteristics and the hydraulic cylinder part where the impact of the load force is taken into account. By comparing simulation data and actual data, the results show that the electrode system model is proved to be accurate. 展开更多

Evaporation erosion of the contacts is one of the fundamental failure mechanisms for relays. In this paper, the evaporation erosion characteristics are investigated for the copper contact pair breaking a resistive direct current (dc) 30 V/10 A circuit in the air. Molten pool simulation of the contacts is coupled with the gas dynamics to calculate the evaporation rate. A simplified arc model is constructed to obtain the contact voltage and current variations with time for the prediction of the current density and the heat flux distributions flowing from the arc into the contacts. The evaporation rate and mass variations with time during the breaking process are presented. Experiments are carried out to verify the simulation results. 展开更多

A central solenoid model coil will be set up to develop and verify the technique for the full-size central solenoid coil of the China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor.In case of quench and failures of superconducting coils,the quench protection(QP)system,which employs fuse-based commutation technology,is designed.This paper presents an analytical model to investigate the commutation process in the QP circuit.The model consists of the QP circuit equations,the breaker arc model,the fuse pre-arc model,and the fuse arc model.The model is employed in the whole commutation process including current transfer from breaker branch to the fuse branch model,then from fuse branch to the discharge resistor branch,and current decrease to zero in the discharge resistor.The experiment result verified the effectiveness of the presented model.The model might be helpful for design of the fuse and optimization of the commutation circuit. 展开更多

A commercial CFD (computational fluid dynamics) code FLUENT was used and modified to model an atmospheric pressure argon arc in a low cross flow by solving the fully coupled conservation equations. Numerical experiments, with an arc current of 100 A to 200 A, an arcing distance of 3 mm to 6 mm, and a cross-flow velocity of 10 m/s to 30 m/s, were carried out. The modelling results show that the arc tends to take the shortest path to the anode when deflected by the cross flow; its anode attachment is farther downstream than the cathode one. Furthermore, due to the low input gas flow imposed in this study, the effect of electromagnetic force is important and it influences the crosscut shape of the arc significantly. 展开更多

Arc plasma jet flow in the air was investigated under a bridge-type contacts in a DC 270 V resistive circuit. We characterized the arc plasma jet flow appearance at different currents by using high-speed photography, and two polished contacts were used to search for the relationship between roughness and plasma jet flow. Then, to make the nature of arc plasma jet flow phenomena clear, a simplified model based on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory was established and calculated. The simulated DC arc plasma was presented with the temperature distribution and the current density distribution. Furthermore, the calculated arc flow velocity field showed that the circular vortex was an embodiment of the arc plasma jet flow progress. The combined action of volume force and contact surface was the main reason of the arc jet flow. 展开更多

The effects of the arc ignition location, venting size and gassing material on arc behavior have been investigated. The analysis of the results show that the arc velocity accelerates with the increase in the distance between arc ignition location and of the venting size, and the existence of the gassing material is beneficial to improving the arc voltage and reducing the arc temperature. 展开更多

In this paper a commercial CFD (computational fluid dynamics) code FLUENT has been used and modified for the axisymmetric swirl and time-dependent simulation of an atmospheric pressure argon arc in an external axial magnetic field (AMF). The computational domain includes the arc itself and the anodic region. Numerical results demonstrate that the AMF substantially increases the tangential component of the plasma velocity. The resulting centrifugal force for the plasma rotation impels it to travel to the arc mantel and as a result, a low-pressure region appears at the arc core. With the AMF, the arc presents a hollow bell shape and correspondingly, the maximal values of the temperature, pressure and current density on the anode surface are departing from the arc centreline. 展开更多

Plasma source performance parameters, including plasma ejection density and velocity, greatly affect the operation of a short-conduction-time plasma opening switch (POS). In this paper, the plasma source used in the POS of Qiangguang I generator is chosen as the study object. At first the POS working process is analyzed. The result shows that the opening performance of the POS can be improved by increasing the plasma ejection velocity and decreasing the plasma density. The influence of the cable plasma gun structure and number on the plasma ejection parameters is experimentally investigated with two charge collectors. Finally a semi-empirical model is proposed to describe the experimental phenomenon. 展开更多

A 3D Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) arc model in conjunction with an arc move- ment model is applied to simulate the arc rotation as well as to solve its effect on the pressure in an auto-expansion circuit breaker. The rotation of the arc driven by an external electromagnetic force is simulated in the case with 200 kA of the short circuit current and 16 ms of arc duration. The arc rotating process and the speed of arc rotation have been obtained in the simulation. A comparison of the pressure in the expansion volume with and without an external magnetic field has been carried out based on the calculation results of two cases. The results of the simulation reveal that the arc rotation, which causes more energy exchange between the arc and its sur- rounding gas, can evidently bring about the pressurization in the expansion volume, which would contribute to more effective arc quenching at current zero and further reducing operation power. 展开更多

The commercial software FLUENT is adapted and modified to develop a twodimensional magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) models of arc with the thermodynamic properties and transport coefficients, net emission coefficient for the radiation model of 99% ai-1% Cu, 99% air-1% Ag, and pure air, respectively. The simulation result demonstrates that vaporization of the electrode material may cool the arc center region and reduce the arc velocity. A model coupling the plasma with a cathode body is applied in the simulation of the diffuse state of a magnetically rotating arc.Four parametric studies are performed:on the external axial magnetic field(AMF),on the cathode shape,on the total current and on the inlet gas velocity.The numerical results show that:the cathode attachment focuses in the center of the cathode tip with zero AMF and gradually shifts off the axis with the increase of AMF;a larger cathode conical angle corresponds to a cathode arc attachment farther away off axis;the maximum values of plasma temperature increase with the total current;the plasma column in front of the cathode tip expands more severely in the axial direction,with a higher inlet speed;the cathode arc attachment shrinks towards the tip as the inlet speed increases.The various results are supposed to be explained by the joint effect of coupled cathode surface heating and plasma rotating flow. 展开更多

A segmented hyper-redundant manipulator can perform complicated operation tasks in a confined space due to its high flexibility and dexterity. However, the trajectory planning in a narrow space and obstacles environment is very challenging for the manipulator. In this paper, we propose a geometry method to simultaneously plan the end-effector pose and manipulator’s configuration. Firstly, the geometries of each segment are described by an inscribed arc(IA) and a circumscribed arc(CA). Then,the whole kinematics chain is considered as an inscribed curve(IC) or a circumscribed curve(CC) which are composed of multiple IAs or CAs. Furthermore, the IC and CC of the manipulator are divided into multiple spatial single-arc and double-arc groups according to requirements. The pose-configuration simultaneous planning is realized by the spatial single-arc/double-arc modeling and joints angles solving. By numerical iteration, the spatial arcs’ parameters are determined according to desired pose and boundary condition of obstacle avoidance. The angles of joints are analytically solved when the above parameters are known. Finally, a narrow space detection task is simulated and experimented respectively. A 2-D depth averaged RNG k- ε model is developed to simulate the flow in a typical reach of the Upper Yellow River with non-monotonic banks. In order to take account of the effect of the secondary flow in a bend, the momentum equations are modified by adding an additional source term. A comparison between the numerical simulation and the field measurements indicates that the improved 2-D depth averaged RNG k- ε model can improve the accuracy of the numerical simulation. An arc spline interpolation method is developed to interpolate the non-monotonic river banks. The method can also be reasonably applied for the 2-D interpolation of the river bed level. Through a comparison of the water surface gradients simulated in the seven bends of the studied reach, some analytical formulae are improved to reasonably calculate the longitudinal and transverse gradients in meandering river reaches. Furthermore, the positions of the maximum water depth and the maximum velocity in a typical bend are discussed. 展开更多
