As an example and case s...In this multidisciplinary study, the main research question was how to improve the value of entrepreneurial initiatives that provide the web service of automatic accompaniment to Arab singing. As an example and case study, we considered the Mawaweel website that offered an automatic accompaniment to Arab vocal improvisation as a main service. After overviewing the website, we conducted a survey examining the satisfaction of its visitors in regard to presentation and quality of service. It was found that the Mawaweel website had potential to achieve success as the majority of the 22 respondents expressed general satisfaction after their first visit to the website, with an average rate of 75%. However, respondents’ ratings were strict when discussing specific aspects about the website presentation and service quality, and the means of average rates were 68.32% and 50.23% respectively. The standard deviations of average rates were 15.70% and 19.13%, respectively. This revealed a sense of inhomogeneity in the values of the different aspects of the website presentation, and an expanded sense of inhomogeneity in the quality of the different services delivered by the website. We then compared the Mawaweel website to other websites and proposed specific improvements to the aspects with average rate below 50%.展开更多

In visual processing, the lateral occipital complex (LOC) is known to participate in foreground and background segregation. We investigated the role of LOC in music processing with use of positron emission tomography (PET). Method: Musically na?ve subjects listened to unfamiliar novel melodies with (accompaniment condition) and without the accompaniment (melodic condition). Using a PET subtraction technique, we studied changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) during the accompaniment condition compared to the melodic condition. Results: The accompanyment condition was associated with bilateral increase of rCBF at the lateral and medial surfaces of both occipital lobes, medial parts of fusiform gyri, cingulate gyri, precentral gyri, insular cortices, and cerebellum. During the melodic condition, the activation at the anterior and posterior portions of the temporal lobes, medial surface of the frontal lobes, inferior frontal gyri, orbitofrontal cortices, inferior parietal lobules, and cerebellum was observed. Conclusions: The LOC participates in recognition of melody with accompaniment, a phenomenon that can be regarded as foreground and background segregation in auditory processing. The fusiform cortex which was known to participate in the color recognition might be activated by the recognition of flourish sounds by the accompaniment, compared to melodic condition. It is supposed that the LOC and fusiform cortex play similar functions beyond the difference of sensory modalities.展开更多

Based on the argument that technologies mediate human experience and praxis,the idea of technology accompaniment has been suggested as an approach to developing human-tech relations.In light of this idea,this paper ar...Based on the argument that technologies mediate human experience and praxis,the idea of technology accompaniment has been suggested as an approach to developing human-tech relations.In light of this idea,this paper argues,firstly,that when technologies inevitably have moral relevance in influencing human perceptions and actions,the constitution of a moral subject has much to do with shaping technological mediation deliberately and creatively.While there is not always a direct connection between what humans know and what humans do,technological mediation can help to strengthen people’s motivation to do the right thing.Subsequently,we examine two approaches that have often been suggested for realizing subject-constitution-with-technology:one is Technology Assessment,and the other is Mediation Design.Although the former can equip people with knowledge about technological mediation,it is relatively weak when it comes to directly producing moral behavior.In contrast,the latter not only exerts a more direct impact on user behavior but may also improve people’s moral knowledge.Nonetheless,both approaches face the general challenge of moral education.As moral knowledge does not guarantee moral behavior,knowing facts and theories about technological mediation may not lead to subject constitution as a result of the development of the human-tech relationship.To overcome this difficulty,an extension of the latter approach is proposed.The design of meta-mediation has great potential to shift users' attention to theaforementioned mediating effect of technology-in-use and, thereby, users’subject constitution can be enabled.展开更多
Controlling marine pollution caused by hydrocarbons spilling from oil tanker accidents and oil rigs is urgently needed.Conventional pollution control vessels currently in service worldwide do not meet certain safety c...Controlling marine pollution caused by hydrocarbons spilling from oil tanker accidents and oil rigs is urgently needed.Conventional pollution control vessels currently in service worldwide do not meet certain safety criteria,storage capacities,and response times owing to their technical shortcomings.This study proposes a new concept of multimission and autonomous antipollution vessels capable of acting quickly and efficiently to counter such pollution threats.The objective of this study is to carry out a total and rapid recovery of the spilled oil slick in complete safety.Hence,optimizing the bulbous bow adapted to the pollution control vessel during its displacement is necessary to horizontally straighten the accompanying waves formed around the hull and to laminate the flow upstream of the side openings for the recovery of spilled oil.This optimization improves the nautical qualities specific to this ship to reduce the total resistance to progress and to standardize the flow upstream of the side openings to allow the collection of spilled oil at high speed.This optimization study can open a field of application for the construction of modern multi-mission pollution control vessels.Tests in hull basins will be planned to validate and adjust the results obtained from the simulations.展开更多

Based on the difference in severity of the disease and complications, 80 cases of acquired immune-deficiency syndrome (AIDS) accompanied with cough were divided into 2 groups: One treated by traditional Chinese medici...Based on the difference in severity of the disease and complications, 80 cases of acquired immune-deficiency syndrome (AIDS) accompanied with cough were divided into 2 groups: One treated by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM group), including 58 cases and the other treated by Integrated Chinese and Western medicine (integrated group), 22 cases. The therapeutic results show that in the TCM group there were 18 cases (31.03%) with clinical cure of the respiratory tract infection, 7 cases with therapeutic effect (12.07%) and 33 cases without any effect (56.90%), for a total rate of 43.10% therapeutic effectiveness; while in the integrated group there were 6 cases with clinical cure (27.27%), 2 cases with therapeutic effect (9.09%) and 14 cases without any effect (63.64%), the total rate of therapeutic effectiveness being 36.36%, slightly lower than in the TCM group and possibly related to greater severity of the disease or complications.展开更多

Mauriac firstly described the syndrome characterized by hepatomegaly with altered liver enzymes, growth impairment, delay puberty and Cushingoid features, during childhood. HG in adulthood is characterized by the liver disorder(with circulating aminotransferase increase) in the presence of poor glycemic control(elevation of glycated hemoglobin, Hb A1 c levels). The advances in the comprehension of the metabolic pathways driving to the hepatic glycogen deposition point out the role of glucose transporters and insulin mediated activations of glucokinase and glycogen synthase, with inhibition of glucose-6-phosphatase. The differential diagnosis of HG consists in the exclusion of causes of liver damage(infectious, metabolic, obstructive and autoimmune disease). The imaging study(ultrasonography and/or radiological examinations) gives information about the liver alterations(hepatomegaly), but the diagnosis needs to be confirmed by the liver biopsy. The main treatment of HG is the amelioration of glycemic control that is usu-ally accompanied by the reversal of the liver disorder. In selected cases, more aggressive treatment options(transplantation) have been successfully reported.展开更多
