American Indians are a substantial minority in both the United States and Canada and present with a disproportionate share of mental health and behavioral health problems. While a large proportion of the native population resides on reservations that are self-managed and have few non-Indian residents, professional health services are mostly provided by clinicians from the dominant culture. The essay tries to highlight specific historical, sociological, and cultural variables the clinician must be aware of to work effectively in this setting. Particular emphasis is placed on using a flexible, eclectic approach, and a case vignette is included to illustrate the principle. 展开更多

The paper mainly studies a new way of combining American culture with English language teaching and learning by means of the VOA Special English feature programs. It is based on a 5-year period of teaching practice, experience and reflection. This interactive, innovative, productive and student-centered approach is a far cry from the rigid, old, unproductive and teacher-centered approach of teaching British and American culture without combining language learning and practice as is commonly used here in Chinese colleges. The author also throws some light on how to use on-line teaching resources and how to cultivate independent learning on the part of the students he has worked with. 展开更多

Culture is the holistic interrelationship of a group's identity, beliefs, values, activities, rules, customs, communication patterns, and institutions (Dodd, 1998). Values are important components of a given culture accepted by individuals sharing that culture. They are deep and hidden elements of the cultural iceberg that are seldom questioned or defended but can reflect different characteristics of different cultures. Kluckhohn and Strodbeck's value model is used here to analyze distinct Chinese and American culture. 展开更多

Educational cooperation is one of the key factors to embody humanistic exchanges and promote the development of international relations.Through the analysis of four survey reports on China-U.S.educational cooperation,it is found that American policy elites generally attach importance to the distribution of power, the application of law, mutual benefit between the two countries in educational cooperation, and pay attention to the potential motivation and influence of China.China should rationally refer to the views and suggestions, strengthen the effectiveness of dialogue mechanism, enhance the credibility of international discourse, and at the same time encourage the negotiation and governance among cooperative universities,so as to promote the stable and sustainable development of education cooperation. 展开更多

China and the United States(US)have established respective cul-tural institutions in each other, namely the Confucius Institute and the American Cultural Centre. While they differ in the estab-lishment background and management model,in their counter-part countries’view, both Confucius Institutes and American Cultural Centres serve the function of public diplomacy as a‘quasi-diplomatic agency’,attracting extensive political attention. When comparing the history of their developments in the US and China,a similar trend of‘rise-to-fall’and‘positivity-to-negativity’can be observed. The stagnation of American Cultural Centres in China and the crisis of Confucius Institutes in the US both origin-ate from the same source—political pressure. The development paths of both institutions are closely related to the development and transformation of Sino–US political relations. In this process,China’s attitude is relatively moderate in an attempt to maintain the continuous development of a friendly bilateral relation, while the US is anxious about China’s rising status as its economic and strategic competitor, thereby adjusting its China policy and imposing rigid political controls over Confucius Institutes.Affected by the Sino–US trade dispute and the COVID-19 pandemic,Sino–US relations deteriorate further;accordingly, the future out-look of Confucius Institutes in the US is worrying. However, with abundant uncertainties, the future of the Confucius Institute remains to be further studied. 展开更多

The Chineseness of Chinese American literature is often assumed to be an unquestionable premise, but Chinese American writers are in fact ambivalent toward Chinese culture.By revisiting Frank Chin’s persistent accusation of other Chinese American writers’“faking”of Chinese culture, this paper examines the changing attitudes of Chinese American writers toward Chinese culture and the quintessential Americanness of Chinese American writings.Through a comparative analysis of the Chinese elements in the texts of Frank Chin and Maxine Hong Kingston,it is argued that the kind of culture in Chinese American literature is an indigenous American product with a Chinesesounding name invented to survive America and therefore should be properly called(Chinese)American culture. In Chinese American literature, the Chinese elements are employed instrumentally as empowering ethnic markers to fortify the American cultural values at the core of this ethnic American culture. 展开更多
