Do States with Professional Sports Teams Have Lower Suicide Rates?

The author examines six age-group specific suicide rates in 2016 between states (in the continental United States) with and without professional sports teams in baseball [MLB], football [NFL], hockey [NHL], and basketball [NBA]. States with at least one team in baseball or football have significantly lower suicide rates among adults in all six age groups (over 20 years of age). States with at least one hockey team have significantly lower suicide rates for all adults over the age of 20, except the oldest age group (adults 65 years of age or over). The results are weakest for states with at least one basketball team. Adults only between 25 and 44 years of age and 65 years of age or over have significantly lower suicide rates with at least one NBA team.

A Decadal Shift of Summer Surface Air Temperature over Northeast Asia around the Mid-1990s

This study identifies a decadal shift of summer surface air temperature （SAT） over Northeast Asia,including southeastern parts of Russia,Mongolia and northern China,around the mid-1990s.The results suggest that the SAT over the Northeast Asia experienced a significant warming after 1994 relative to that before 1993.This decadal shift also extends to northern China,and leads to a warmer summer over Northeast China and North China after the mid-1990s.The decadal warming over Northeast Asia is found to concur with the enhancement of South China rainfall around the mid-1990s.On the one hand,both the Northeast Asian SAT and South China rainfall exhibit this mid-1990s decadal shift only in summer,but not in other seasons.On the other hand,both the Northeast Asian SAT and South China rainfall exhibit this mid-1990s decadal shift not only in the summer seasonal mean,but also in each month of summer （June,July and August）.Furthermore,the decadal warming is found to result from an anticyclonic anomaly over Northeast Asia,which can be interpreted as the response to the increased precipitation over South China,according to previous numerical results.Thus,we conclude that the warming shift of summer Northeast Asian SAT around the mid-1990s was a remote response to the increased precipitation over South China.

Abrupt Summer Warming and Changes in Temperature Extremes over Northeast Asia Since the Mid-1990s: Drivers and Physical Processes

This study investigated the drivers and physical processes for the abrupt decadal summer surface warming and increases in hot temperature extremes that occurred over Northeast Asia in the mid-1990s. Observations indicate an abrupt increase in summer mean surface air temperature （SAT） over Northeast Asia since the mid-1990s. Accompanying this abrupt surface wanning, significant changes in some temperature extremes, characterized by increases in summer mean daily maximum temperature （Tmax）, daily minimum temperature （Train）, annual hottest day temperature （TXx）, and annual warmest night temperature （TNx） were observed. There were also increases in the frequency of summer days （SU） and tropical nights （TR）. Atmospheric general circulation model experiments forced by changes in sea surface temperature （SST）/sea ice extent （SIE）, anthropogenic greenhouse gas （GHG） concentrations, and anthropogenic aerosol （AA） forcing, relative to the period 1964- 93, reproduced the general patterns of observed summer mean SAT changes and associated changes in temperature extremes, although the abrupt decrease in precipitation since the mid-1990s was not simulated. Additional model experiments with different forcings indicated that changes in SST/SIE explained 76% of the area-averaged summer mean surface warming signal over Northeast Asia, while the direct impact of changes in GHG and AA explained the remaining 24% of the surface warming signal. Analysis of physical processes indicated that the direct impact of the changes in AA （through aerosol- radiation and aerosol-cloud interactions）, mainly related to the reduction of AA precursor emissions over Europe, played a dominant role in the increase in TXx and a similarly important role as SST/SIE changes in the increase in the frequency of SU over Northeast Asia via AA-induced coupled atmosphere-land surface and cloud feedbacks, rather than through a direct impact of AA changes on cloud condensation nuclei. The modelling results also imply that the abrupt summer surface warming and increases in hot temperature extremes over Northeast Asia since the mid-1990s will probably sustain in the next few decades as GHG concentrations continue to increase and AA precursor emissions over both North America and Europe continue to decrease.

Inflammatory bowel disease serology in Asia and the West

AIM:To study serological antibodies in Caucasians and Asians,in health and inflammatory bowel disease(IBD),in Australia and Hong Kong(HK).METHODS:Anti-glycan antibodies[anti-chitobioside(ACCA),anti-laminaribioside(ALCA)],and anti-mannobioside(AMCA),anti-Saccharomyces cervisiae(gASCA);and atypical perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody(pANCA)were tested in IBD patients,their unaffected relatives,and healthy controls in Australia and HK(China).Antibody status(positive or negative)and titre was compared between subjects of different geography,ethnicity and disease state.RESULTS:Ninety subjects were evaluated:21 Crohn’s disease(CD),32 ulcerative colitis(UC),29 healthy controls,and 8 IBD patient relatives.Forty eight subjects were Australian(29 Caucasian and 19 ethnic Han Chinese)and 42 were from HK(all Han Chinese).Caucasian CD patients had a significantly higher antibody prevalence of gASCA(67%vs 3%,P<0.001),ALCA(44%vs 6%,P=0.005),and AMCA(67%vs 15%,P=0.002),whereas HK CD patients had a higher prevalence of only AMCA(58%vs 25%,P=0.035),when compared with UC and healthy subjects in both countries.Caucasian CD had significantly higher gASCA prevalence(67%vs 0%,P<0.001)and titre(median59 vs 9,P=0.002)than HK CD patients.Prevalence and titres of ALCA,ACCA and AMCA did not differ between CD in the two countries.Presence of at least one antibody was higher in Caucasian than HK CD patients(100%vs 58%,P=0.045).pANCA did not differ between countries or ethnicity.CONCLUSION:Serologic CD responses differ between HK Asian and Australian Caucasian patients.Different genetic,environmental or disease pathogenic factors may account for these differences.

Phylogenetic Patterns of the Southeast Asian Tree Frog Chiromantis hansenae in Thailand

Although landscape features such as mountains and rivers are recognized often as limiting factors to amphibian dispersal and gene flow, a limited number of studies have investigated such patterns across Southeast Asia. A perfect example of this is Thailand, located in one of the world＇s biodiversity hotspot regions. Thailand represents the corridor between mainland Asia and the Sunda Shelf, a famous and widely recognized biogeographic region, and yet there are few studies on the genetic structure among populations of amphibian species distributed across Thailand. The Southeast Asian tree frog, Chiromantis hansenae has been reported to possess a geographic range that is restricted to Thailand and, presumably, Cambodia~ Here, we investigate phylogenetic relationships among C. hansenae populations using partial sequences of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene and nuclear POMC gene. Our results reveal two distinct evolutionary lineages within C. hansenae populations in Thailand. The genetic divergence among populations between these two clades is considerable, and results support inter-population divergence, and high genetic differentiation （pairwise FsT = 0.97）, between two localities sampled in western Thailand （TK1 and TK2）, separated from each other by 40 kilometers only. The results suggest that landscape features across Thailand may have a profound impact on patterns of diversification in the country, underscoring the urgent need for fine-scale investigations of genetic structure of endemic and ＂widespread＂ species.

China's Technologies for Exploration and Mining of Uranium Deposits Have Stepped into the World's Top Team

On June 2011, the Beijing Research Institute of Uranium Geology, an Institute within the China National Nuclear Corporation （CNNC）, and the Department of Geology ＆ Mining CNNC carried out a project Scientific Drilling.for Deep Metallogenic Research in the Xiangshan Large Uranium Ore Field. A year later on June 21, the project, representing the first scientific drilling of China＇s uranium, was officially launched, and successfully completed on June 17, 2013. A 2818.88 m of drilling depth has broken the previous record 1200 m of exploration depth.

Effects of Team Structure on Innovation Performance： An Empirical Study

Teamwork is gaining increasing attention in a broader management research. In addition to previous research on the relationship between team structure and innovation performance, this study draws from an interesting experience-based theory advanced by Kelley and Littman （2005）, which examines teams from design thinking perspective, and tests its contributions and effects on team＇s innovation performance. According to Kelley and Littman any team should include the following team roles： The anthropologist, the experimenter, the cross-pollinator, the hurdler, the collaborator, the director, the experience architect, the set designer, the storyteller, and the caregiver. We develop theoretical logics to explain how team structure that includes these key team roles and competences lead to a better innovation performance, and propose pertinent hypotheses. Experimental-empirical research and quantitative analysis were used in the study. The study conducted multiple experiments on three samples： a group of foreign entrepreneurship students, a group of technical students, and an additional group of randomly selected individuals, aged between 20 and 58, with diverse backgrounds. A special approach was implemented and a new instrument was developed to evaluate individuals in teams. While the results show that team that possess the major competences proposed by Kelley and Littman are more innovative, preliminary results also show that not all team roles are equally important. Moreover, team roles should be allocated equally among members for better collaboration, member satisfaction, and quick response, and within one team, one prevailing personality is optimal in terms of innovativeness. We discuss the implications of our findings for future research and managerial practice.

Epidemiological characteristics of Asian children with inflammatory bowel disease at diagnosis: Insights from an Asian-Pacific multicentre registry network

BACKGROUND There remains a dearth of Asian epidemiological literature for paediatric inflammatory bowel disease(PIBD).AIM To describe the presenting features of PIBD from 7 Asia-Pacific pediatric gastroenterology centers via a central standardised electronic data platform.METHODS Clinical,endoscopic and radiologic data at diagnosis from the registry were extracted between 1^(st) January 1995 to 31^(st) December 2019.Disease phenotypic characteristics were classified as per the Paris classification system.RESULTS There was a distinct rise in new PIBD cases:Nearly half(48.6%)of the cohort was diagnosed in the most recent 5 years(2015-2019).The ratio of Crohn’s disease(CD):Ulcerative colitis(UC):IBDUnclassified was 55.9%:38.3%:5.8%.The mean age was 9.07 years with a high proportion of very early onset IBD(VEO-IBD)(29.3%)and EO-IBD(52.7%).An over-representation of the Indian/South Asian ethnic group was observed which accounted for 37.0% of the overall Singapore/Malaysia subcohort(6.8%-9.0%Indians in census).Indian/South Asian CD patients were also most likely to present with symptomatic perianal disease(P=0.003).CD patients presented with significantly more constitutional symptoms(fever,anorexia,malaise/fatigue and muscle-wasting)than UC and higher inflammatory indices(higher C-reactive protein and lower albumin levels).CONCLUSION We observed a high incidence of VEO-IBD and an over-representation of the Indian ethnicity.South Asian CD patients were more likely to have symptomatic perianal disease.

A Critical Inquiry into the Concept of East Asia （China, Japan, Korea） of the Past Centuries： In the Context of Asia＇s Image

In East Asia---China, Japan and Korea^there has always existed both a desire and hope for regional integration. Europe has been, and remains, a symbolic model of regional integration at political, economic, social and cultural levels. The hope to achieve a similar regional community has provided the momentum and impetus to think about a more general idea of East Asia： An idea that might substantiate the entire region＇s future prospects. Previously, East Asia has not been overly successful at generating any knowledge or understanding of its own identity. It is therefore necessary to conduct an inquiry into the concept of East Asia. The complexity of knowledge about East Asia should be clarified. This paper interprets the concept of East Asia in past centuries, explains how people conceptualized East Asia in the broader context of the continent and evaluates its characteristic features.

Critical reflection on the role of theater nurses in a multidisciplinary team for perioperative care in China

Objective: The aim of this article is to reflect on the role of theater nurses in a multidisciplinary team, understand the factors that have influenced theater nurses' practice, and improve the authors' clinical practice ultimately.Methods: The author used Smyth's model to guide the process of reflection on the practice issue. Critical reflection, critical emancipatory theory, reflexivity, and critical social theory were used to help the author analyze the factors that have affected theater nurses' practice in the organization.Results: There are gaps between the espoused and enacted theories. A theater nurse's practice is determined by multiple factors, such as political, structural, social, historical, cultural issues, and so on. The hierarchy of the health context could hinder possible changes in theater nurses' practice. To better understand our practice and implement transformation, we should shape a supportive environment,bear in mind the practice motto of "patient-centered" care, and improve our knowledge and reflection skills.Conclusions: Reflection plays a significant role in the advancing of practice among theater nurses and needs to be combined with clinical practice. To provide the best service of care to perioperative patients, a theater nurse should have an insightful understanding of the factors that have influenced her/his behaviors historically, socially, and culturally. By improving their critical reflection skills,practitioners could gain knowledge from experience.

From the perspective of intra-product specialization and with in-depth analysis of trade statistics,this paper investigates the influence of China's rise on the East Asian production network.Our conclusions suggest that in integrating into the East Asian production network,China has gradually emerged as the manufacturing center of East Asia,weakening the regional influence of the Four Asian Tigers.Meanwhile,the competitive effect of China's rise has helped promote the specialization levels of the network's members and even the network as a whole.With cooperation in various processes of intra-product specialization,internal connections of the East Asian production network were further strengthened.In addition,China became an export platform of East Asia,transforming the export pattern of the East Asian production network to world markets from "bilateral trade" into "triangular trade," trade via China.
