The radiance leaving the earth-atmosphere system which can be sensed by a satellite borne radiometer is the sum of radiation emission from the earth surface and each atmospheric level that are transmitted to the top of the atmosphere. The radiation emission from the earth surface and the radiance of each atmospheric level can be separated from the radiance at the top the atmospheric level measured by a satellite borne radiometer. However, it is very difficult to measure the atmospheric radiance, especially the synchronous measurement with the satellite. Thus some atmospheric radiative transfer models have been developed to provide many options for modeling atmospheric radiation transport, such as LOWTRAN, MODTRAN, 6S, FASCODE, LBLRTM, SHARC, and SAMM. Meanwhile, these models can support the detailed detector system design, the optimization and evaluation of satellite mission parameters, and the data processing procedures. As an example, the newly atmospheric radiative transfer models, MODTRAN will be compared with other models after the atmospheric radiative transfer is described. And the atmospheric radiative transfer simulation procedures and their applications to atmospheric transmittance, retrieval of atmospheric elements, and surface parameters, will also be presented. 展开更多

An accurate and rapid method for solving radiative transfer equation is presented in this paper. According to the fact that the multiple scattering component of radiance is less sensitive to the error of phase function than the single scattering component is,we calculate the multiple scattering component by using delta-Eddington approximation and the single scattering component by solving radiative transfer equation. On the ground, when multiple sattering component is small, for example, when the total optical depth T is small, the accurate radiance can be obtained with this method. For the need of the space remote sensing, the upward radiance at the top of the atmosphere is mainly studied, and an approximate expression is presented to correct the multiple scattering component. Compared with the more precise Gauss-Seidel method.the results from this method show an accuracy of better than 10% when zenith angle 0 < 50 掳 and T < 1. The computational speed of this method is, however, much faster than that of Gauss-Seidel method. 展开更多

To improve the modeling accuracy of radiative transfer, the scattering properties of aerosol particles with irregular shapes and inhomogeneous compositions should be simulated accurately. To this end,a light-scattering model for nonspherical particles is established based on the pseudo-spectral time domain(PSTD)technique. In this model, the perfectly matched layer with auxiliary differential equation(ADE-PML),an excellent absorption boundary condition(ABC)in the finite difference time domain generalized for the PSTD,and the weighted total field/scattered field(TF/SF)technique is employed to introduce the incident light into 3 D computational domain. To improve computational efficiency, the model is further parallelized using the Open MP technique. The modeling accuracy of the PSTD scheme is validated against Lorenz–Mie,Aden–Kerker,T-matrix theory and DDA for spheres, inhomogeneous particles and nonspherical particles, and the influence of the spatial resolution and thickness of ADE-PML on the modeling accuracy is discussed as well. Finally, the parallel computational efficiency of the model is also analyzed. The results show that an excellent agreement is achieved between the results of PSTD and well-tested scattering models, where the simulation errors of extinction efficiencies are generally smaller than 1%,indicating the high accuracy of our model.Despite its low spatial resolution, reliable modeling precision can still be achieved by using the PSTD technique, especially for large particles. To suppress the electromagnetic wave reflected by the absorption layers,a six-layer ADE-PML should be set in the computational domain at least. 展开更多

Studies on optical properties of aerosols can reduce the uncertainty for modelling direct radiative forcing(DRF)and improve the accuracy for discussing aerosols effects on the Tibetan Plateau(TP)climate. This study investigated the spatiotemporal variation of aerosol optical and microphysical properties over TP based on OMI and MERRA2,and assessed the influence of aerosol optical properties on DRF at NamCo station(30°46.44′N,90°59.31′E,4730 m)in the central TP from 2006 to 2017 based on a long measurement of AERONET and the modelling of SBDART model. The results show that aerosol optical depth(AOD)exhibits obvious seasonal variation over TP,with higher AOD500nm(>0.75)during spring and summer, and lower value(<0.25)in autumn and winter. The aerosol concentrations show a fluctuated rising from 1980 to 2000,significant increasing from 2000 to 2010 and slight declining trend after 2013.Based on sensitivity experiments,it is found that AOD and single scattering albedo(SSA)have more important impact on the DRF compared withαvalues and ASY.When AOD440nm increases by 60%,DRF at the TOA and ATM is increased by 57.2%and 60.2%,respectively.When SSA440nm increases by 20%,DRF at the TOA and ATM decreases by 121%and 96.7%,respectively. 展开更多

The line formation process in stellar magnetized atmospheres is studied by observing the wavelength- dependence of Stokes contribution functions. The influence of magnetic field on the escape line photon distribution and line absorption is obtained by comparing with the null magnetic field case. Two models airs adopted. One assumes limited distributions of both the line absorption and magnetic field where a hypothetical magneto-sensitive line is formed. The other is a model atmosphere of sunspot umbra in which MgI 5172.7 forms. It is found that the magnetic field influences the formation region of Stokes I at wavelengths sufficient close to the Zeeman splitting points ±△ H. The formation regions at wavelengths far away from the Zeeman splitting points generally show a non-magnetic behaviour. Further, if the line core is split by the Zeeman effect, the line formation core introduced in the previous paper disappears. On the other hand, Stokes Q, U, V at each wavelength within the line form in the same layers where both the line absorption and magnetic field are present in the models accepted for the lines used. When the line absorption and magnetic field ubiquitously exist, the formation regions of the T peaks or valleys of Stokes Q, U and those of σ of Stokes V generally cover the widest depth range. It is pointed out that such a study is instructive in the explanation of solar polarized filtergrams. It can tell us at each observation point where the received line photons of wavelengths within the bandpass come from and where their polarization states are formed or give us the distributions of these photons as well as their polarization intensities. Thus a three-dimensional image can be constructed for a morphologic study of the observed area from serial filtergrams. 展开更多

To harness the rich solar energy resources in Xinjiang Region of Northwest China, this study tries to address the issue of lack of downward surface shortwave radiation(DSSR)observations and the need to improve the accuracy of satellite retrieval and numerical simulation of DSSR under varied sky and meteorological conditions.(1)A two-layer aerosol model specific to Xinjiang was developed to capture the vertical distributions of aerosols based on multiple data sources including lidar,GPS sounding, ground meteorological observations, and profiles from the ECMWF reanalysis version 5(ERA5)data.The results show that the ERA5/PBLH(planetary boundary layer height)and ERA5/ALH(aerosol layer height)could be used to establish the two-layer aerosol model and characterize the vertical distribution of aerosols in Xinjiang Region.(2)Using the Santa Barbara Discrete Atmospheric Radiative Transfer(SBDART)model,a localized inverse model of clear-sky DSSR was established. After parameter adjustment and using the optimal combination of input parameters for DSSR simulation together with the two-layer aerosol model, the model-simulated DSSR(DSSRSBD)under clear-sky conditions improved significantly compared to the initial results, with all fitting indices greatly improved.(3)In addition, the study demonstrated that the impact of the two-layer aerosol model on DSSR was more pronounced under dust conditions than clear-sky conditions.(4)Using the localized clear-sky DSSR inversion model and its required parameters, simulations were also conducted to capture the spatiotemporal distribution of DSSR under clear-sky conditions in Xinjiang from 2017 to 2019.The annual average DSSR_(SBD)under clear-sky conditions in Xinjiang during 2017–2019 was 606.78 W m^(-2),while DSSR from CERES(DSSR_(CER))under the same conditions was generally higher(703.95 W m^(-2)).(5)It is found that satellite remote sensing products experienced data loss in high-altitude snow areas, where numerical simulation technology could serve as a valuable complement. 展开更多

Earth observation technologies are important for obtaining geospatial information on the Earth’s surface and are used widely in many disciplines, such as resource surveying, environmental monitoring, and evolutionary studies. However,it is a challenge for existing Earth observation platforms to acquire this type of data rapidly on a global scale due to limitations in orbital altitude and field of view;thus development of an advanced platform for Earth observation is desirable. As a natural satellite of the Earth, placement of various sensors on the Moon could possibly facilitate comprehensive, continuous, and longterm observations of the Earth. This is a relatively new concept and the study is still at the preliminary stage with no actual Moon-based Earth observation data available at this time.To understand the characteristics of Moon-based microwave radiation, several physical factors that potentially influence microwave radiation imaging,e.g.,time zone correction, relative movement of the Earth-Moon,atmospheric radiative transfer, and the effect of the ionosphere, were examined.Based on comprehensive analysis of these factors, the Moon-based microwave brightness temperature images were simulated using spaceborne temperature data. The results show that time zone correction ensures that the simulation images may be obtained at Coordinated Universal Time(UTC)and that the relative movement of the Earth-Moon affects the positions of the nadir and Moon-based imaging. The effect of the atmosphere on Moon-based observation is dependent on various parameters, such as atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, water vapor, carbon dioxide, oxygen, the viewing zenith angle and microwave frequency. These factors have an effect on atmospheric transmittance and propagation of upward and downward radiation. When microwaves propagate through the ionosphere, the attenuation is related to frequency and viewing zenith angle.Based on initial studies, the simulation results suggest Moon-based microwave radiation imaging is realistic and viable. 展开更多
