Greater Kudu endemic to the Lake Bogoria landscape in Kenya is categorized as vulnerable to extinction due to unsustainable exploitation and management of resources although the continued economic importance of the Greater Kudu in the Lake Bogoria landscape is its best defense. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to analyze the status of knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of locals towards the conservation of the Greater Kudu in the landscape. The survey was conducted using a semi-structured pre-tested questionnaire administered to target populations (N = 137 households). Face-to-face interviews of key informants (KI) and focus group discussions (FGDs) were also carried out. It was found that 84% of KAP respondents agreed that the landscape is rich with biodiversity while 77% of them agreed that conservation of the ecosystem is important for rural livelihoods. Further, 73% of KAP respondents agreed that the extinction of Greater Kudu in the Lake Bogoria landscape may lead to poverty. It is recommended that all-inclusive adaptive management and conservation strategies should embrace continuous monitoring, and understanding dispersal of Greater Kudu to ensure its survival, in the landscape for improved livelihoods.展开更多

In Shanghai, various policy options have been explored, piloted or applied; however, not all of them may be understood and accepted by the public. A survey was conducted to investigate people's attitudes towards several policy options. The main findings reveal that Shanghai residents are resistant to certain policies, such as congestion charges, higher parking charges in congested areas and car restrictions. Instead, they favor public transport provisions. The paper suggests that there is a case for promoting public transport and more efficient trips when the car ownership is still low, and for investing in a policy of educating the public on the 'true' costs and causes of congestion before embarking on ,an intensive policy of congestion charges or restrictions.展开更多

The objectives of this research were to gauge, by means of a questionnaire survey, the opinions of retailers with regard to charging for PSBs, and to consider future directions for reducing the quantity of waste discharged. A questionnaire survey on charging for PSBs was conducted for retail stores in Shizuoka City. The survey was carried out in two phases. The results of the first phase (August to October 2008) showed that supermarkets were generally positive, while conversely other retailer types were negative. The results of the second phase (November to December, 2010), targeting only supermarkets that had introduced charging after the first survey, showed that there was no major confusion and the shift proceeded relatively smoothly. In addition, the number of customers did not decline on account of charging, and the ratio of shoppers bringing their own reusable "eco bags" jumped dramatically. On these accounts, it is evident that charging for PSBs is an effective means of reducing usage of PSBs. The authors view it as important for the relevant governmental agencies to work towards promoting charging at retailers and simultaneously repeatedly explaining to consumers the necessity for charging.展开更多
