Some modifications are presented to further enhance the performance of NSAD in the error-prone environment. Then a new MAC mechanism is proposed that can realize bandwidth guarantee by assigning different self-adapt parameters to users at different priority levels. The bandwidth guarantee property of this new mechanism is analyzed and the high priority users are found to have bandwidth guaranteed even in heavy contention condition, which is proved true not only by theoretical analysis but also by simulation results. At the same time the new scheme keeps the self-adapt character of NSAD, so the overall system utilization is kept very high in heavy contention condition compared with the previously studied DCF-based QoS mechanisms. 展开更多

The varied network performance in the cloud hurts application performance. This increases the tenant’s cost and becomes the key hindrance to cloud adoption. It is because virtual machines(VMs)belonging to one tenant can reside in multiple physical servers and communication interference across tenants occasionally occurs when encountering network congestion. In order to prevent such unpredictability,it is critical for cloud providers to offer the guaranteed network performance at tenant level.Such a critical issue has drawn increasing attention in both academia and industry. Many elaborate mechanisms are proposed to provide guaranteed network performance, such as guaranteed bandwidth or bounded message delay across tenants. However, due to the intrinsic complexities and limited capabilities of commodity hardware, the deployment of these mechanisms still faces great challenges in current cloud datacenters. Moreover, with the rapid development of new technologies, there are new opportunities to improve the performance of existing works, but these possibilities are not under full discussion yet. Therefore,in this paper,we survey the latest development of the network performance guarantee approaches and summarize them based on their features. Then,we explore and discuss the possibilities of using emerging technologies as knobs to upgrade the performance or overcome the inherent shortcomings of existing advances. We hope this article will help readers quickly Received:Apr.07,2020 Revised:Oct.23,2020 Editor:Haifeng Zheng understand the causes of the problems and serve as a guide to motivate researchers to develop innovative algorithms and frameworks. 展开更多

Emerging wireless community cloud enables usergenerated video content to be shared and consumed in a social context. However, the nature of shared wireless medium and timevarying channels seriously limits the quality of service(QoS), partially owing to the lack of mechanisms for effectively utilizing multi-rate channel resources. In this paper, the joint optimization of admission control and rate adaptation is proposed, resulting in a bandwidth-aware rate-adaptive admission control(BRAC) scheme to provide bandwidth guarantee for sharing social multimedia contents. The analytical approach leads to the following major contributions:(1) a bandwidth-aware rate selection(BRS) algorithm to optimally meet the bandwidth requirement of the data session and channel conditions at the physical layer;(2) a routing-coupled rate adaption and admission control algorithm to admit data sessions with bandwidth guarantee. Moreover, extensive numerical simulations suggest that BRAC is efficient and effective in meeting the bandwidth requirements for sharing social multimedia contents. These insights will shed light on communication system implementation for multimedia content sharing over multirate wireless community cloud. 展开更多
