Media often create and ...More than just a drink, tea embodies social, cultural, economic and political meanings through time and across cultures. There is an essential tie between media and this meaning-making process. Media often create and carry the visions of health, nature, tranquility, and prosperity offered by tea. This mediated imaginary seems to persist even in the face of vast human inequalities and suffering and irreversible negative environmental impacts through the current practice of tea production under global conglomerates. Through textual analysis of media narratives of Teavana, a well-known tea brand, this project explores how media's mythic narratives potentially naturalize and celebrate the current production practice and the conspicuous consumption of tea, and silence the human suffering and environmental destruction endured, in order to gratify the very practice and consumption promoted by media.展开更多

It was originally adapted from the novella Heart of Darkness (1902), which was written in th...Apocalypse Now is a 1979 American epic war film set during the Vietnam War, directed and produced by Francis Ford Coppola. It was originally adapted from the novella Heart of Darkness (1902), which was written in the colonial era. Apocalypse Now Redux (2001) is a refined version of the 1979 edition. In previous researches, most scholars only focused on either of the two adapted versions in terms of thematic discussion and narrative analysis, which have ignored the significance of the evolution of the film and the changing historical contexts. Accordingly, on the basis of narrative theory and cultural study, the thesis makes a narrative analysis of the evolution of Apocalypse Now Redux (2001). It indicates that through some newly-inserted narrative elements in Apocalypse Now Redux (2001), more attention is paid to minority groups, darkness in war and media quagmire, which is related to different historical and political contexts and endeavors to remind the American public of the harsh lesson of Vietnam War in the 20th century. However, efforts to restraint the war seem to be ineffective, which is fully exemplified by Iraq War in 2003展开更多
The contemporary English novelist and literary critic David Lodge has published sixteen works of fiction,including the latest published short story collections The Man Who Wouldn't Get Up and Other Stories(2016).I...The contemporary English novelist and literary critic David Lodge has published sixteen works of fiction,including the latest published short story collections The Man Who Wouldn't Get Up and Other Stories(2016).In this work,the first story The Man Who Wouldn't Get Up is the earliest one which was written in the winter of 1965-1966 and mainly tells about a professional man who refuses to get up in order to escape the harsh world and I chiefly discuss the paratexts of it.Gerard Genette defines paratexts as"are those liminal devices and conventions,both within and outside the book,that form part of the complex mediation between book, author, publisher, and reader:titles,forewords,epigraphs,and publishers'jacket copy are part of a book's private and public history."In this paper,I adopt Genette's theory of paratexts which provides a unique theoretical approach for fiction study and apply it to the analysis of Lodge's The Man Who Wouldn't Get Up and Other Stories.The work is rich in miscellaneous paratexts which are one of the characteristics of this work and aid comprehension while shortening the distance between author and reader.The paper mainly examines the peritext:the elements inserted into the interstices,such as,the cover,title,epigraph,biography of the author,reviews of the book,foreword,jacket copy,illustration,dedication,afterword and acknowledgements.Investigating the peritexts of the work indicates the unique function and the significance of the thresholds of interpretation to the fictional text.Ultimately,they become the medium of communication between the author,the text and the reader,and are exemplary of Lodge's creativity and hybrid narrative style.展开更多
Malcolm Bradbury’s novel Rates of Exchange,taking the economic term“rates of exchange”as a central metaphor,depicts various exchanges occurring in the socio-economic landscape of Britain during the 1970s and 1980s....Malcolm Bradbury’s novel Rates of Exchange,taking the economic term“rates of exchange”as a central metaphor,depicts various exchanges occurring in the socio-economic landscape of Britain during the 1970s and 1980s.In the context of governmental emphasis on economic development,the novel intricately explores exchanges among diverse entities,playing with multiple meanings of the term“exchange”.In this way,the novel itself becomes a form of“legal tender,”exchanged for reader comprehension,communication,and participation.It highlights the ubiquitous presence of exchange and the risks associated with the uncertain exchange rates between different entities.Furthermore,it invites readers to participate in the story-telling and the nostalgic journey back to British literary tradition.This paper,drawing on Roland Barthes’s semiotic theory along with structuralist and poststructuralist concepts,investigates the multifaceted meanings of“exchange”in the novel.Through this analysis,the paper aims to illuminate the semiotic significance of various narrative forms and the profound thematic concerns in Bradbury’s work.展开更多
