Taking design of beam & slide-rest guideways for a heavy duty CNC vertical turning mill as an example, under an assumption that stiffnesses of guideways and their jointing structure are sufficiently large, the pressures of the pockets can be attained by adding a co-planarity equation that constrains pocket centers. Then, an optimization model is built to minimize the highest pocket pressure under additional constraints that are posed on the highest seal margin pressure, the highest levitating pressure of the pockets, and the maximum deformation of the guideways. The optimization problem is solved sequentially by using the methods of design of experiments and adaptive simulated annealing on iSIGHT software platform. The results show significant improvements to the original design. Optimized maximum hydrostatic pressure meets the requirement of hydraulic system.展开更多

The transmittance formula is applied to the first-, first two-, and first three-order nonlinearities. Numerical evaluation shows that the symmetry no longer holds when using an elliptic Gaussian beam instead of a circular Gaussian beam. A distortion is observed in the central part of the curve, which decreases as ellipticity increases. Moreover, the variation of the normalized peak-valley difference decreases as ellipticity decreases.展开更多

Starting from a fast axis collimated (FAC) and slow axis collimated (SAC) 15 bars, 19 emitters off the shelf laser diode stack, the beam is transformed using spatial beam combining and polarization coupling. Both techniques integrated in a compact design enable to couple the kilowatt level beam into a standard 600 μm core, 0.22 numerical aperture (NA) multimode optical fiber. An application in the field of long range SWIR laser illuminator for gated viewing is presented. A comparison between two illuminators is realized both based on the same laser diode stack but one using beam parameter product (BPP) reduction and one without. It could be demonstrated that BPP reduction is the best way for efficient, narrow divergence and compact semi-conductor based laser illuminators design and realization. The global laser illuminator efficiency could be improved by 75% for the narrowest divergences thanks to this approach.展开更多

The RF ion source consists of a driver region, including a helical antenna and a discharge chamber, and an expansion region. RF power can be transferred at up to 10 kW with a fixed frequency of 2 MHz through an optimized RF matching system. An actively water-cooled Faraday shield is located inside the driver region of the ion source for the stable and steady-state operations of high-power RF discharge. Plasma ignition of the ion source is initiated by the injection of argongas without a starter-filament heating, and the argon-gas is then slowly exchanged by the injection of hydrogen-gas to produce pure hydrogen plasmas. The uniformities of the plasma parameter, such as a plasma density and an electron temperature, are measured at the lowest area of the driver region using two RF-compensated electrostatic probes along the direction of the shortand long-dimensions of the driver region. The plasma parameters will be compared with those obtained at the lowest area of the expansion bucket to analyze the plasma expansion properties from the driver region to the expansion region.展开更多
