High-quality bonding of 4-inch GaAs and Si is achieved using plasma-activated bonding technology. The influence of Ar plasma activation on surface morphology is discussed. When the annealing temperature is 300℃,the bonding strength reaches a maximum of 6.2 MPa.In addition,a thermal stress model for GaAs/Si wafers is established based on finite element analysis to obtain the distribution of equivalent stress and deformation variables at different temperatures. The shape varia-tion of the wafer is directly proportional to the annealing temperature. At an annealing temperature of 400℃,the maximum protrusion of 4 inches GaAs/Si wafers is 3.6 mm.The interface of GaAs/Si wafers is observed to be dense and defect-free using a transmission electron microscope. The characterization of interface elements by X-ray energy dispersion spectroscopy indi-cates that the elements at the interface undergo mutual diffusion, which is beneficial for improving the bonding strength of the interface. There is an amorphous transition layer with a thickness of about 5 nm at the bonding interface. The preparation of Si-based GaAs heterojunctions can enrich the types of materials required for the development of integrated circuits, improve the performance of materials and devices, and promote the development of microelectronics technology. 展开更多

Objective:This study deals with the effect of phosphoric acid etching and conditioning on enamel micro-tensile bond strengths(μTBSs)of conventional and resin-modified glass ionomer cements(GICs/RMGICs).Methods:Forty-eight bovine incisors were prepared into rectangular blocks.Highly-polished labial enamel surfaces were either acid-etched,conditioned with liquids of cements,or not further treated(control).Subsequently, two matching pre-treated enamel surfaces were cemented together with one of four cements[two GICs:Fuji I(GC),Ketac Cem Easymix(3M ESPE);two RMGICs:Fuji Plus(GC),RelyX Luting(3M ESPE)]in preparation forμTBS tests.Pre-treated enamel surfaces and cement-enamel interfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM).Results:Phosphoric acid etching significantly increased the enamelμTBS of GICs/RMGICs.Conditioning with the liquids of the cements produced significantly weaker or equivalent enamelμTBS compared to the control.Regardless of etching,RMGICs yielded stronger enamelμTBS than GICs.A visible hybrid layer was found at certain enamelcement interfaces of the etched enamels. Conclusions:Phosphoric acid etching significantly increased the enamelμTBSs of GICs/RMGICs.Phosphoric acid etching should be recommended to etch the enamel margins before the cementation of the prostheses such as inlays and onlays, using GICs/RMGICs to improve the bond strengths.RMGICs provided stronger enamel bond strength than GICs and conditioning did not increase enamel bond strength. 展开更多

Rock anchors are a common safety measure for stabilising large-scale infrastructure, such as bridge towers, retaining walls, rock slopes and windmills. There are four principal failure modes for rock anchors:(a)tensile failure of the steel anchor,(b)anchor-grout interface failure,(c)grout-rock interface failure, and(d)rock mass uplift.Field tests were performed in a limestone quarry. These tests were designed to test failure modes B and C through pullout. In the tests of failure mode B,the shear stress on the anchor-grout interface is the largest at the top of the grout column and attenuates towards the distal end for small loads. The shear stress becomes uniformly distributed when the applied load is approximately 50%of the ultimate pullout load. The anchors designed to test failure mode C were installed with an endplate and had a higher toughness than the straight bar anchors. The shear stress on the grout-rock interface is the largest at the endplate and attenuates upward before slip starts along the interface. When the ultimate pullout load is reached, and the grout column starts to slip, the shear stress is approximately constant. The bond shear strength on the anchor-grout interface was approximately 20%of the uniaxial compressive strength of the grout, and the bond strength of the grout-rock interface was around 5%for that of the grout. The grout-rock interface is likely determined by whichever is weaker, the grout or the rock. 展开更多

By performing density functional theory plus U calculations, we systematically study the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of U02 under uniaxial tensile strain. The results show that the ideal tensile strengths along the [100], [110], and [111] directions are 93.6, 2Z7, and 16.4 GPa at strains of 0.44, 0.24, and 0.16, respectively. After electronic-structure investigation for tensile stain along the [001] direction, we find that the strong mixed ionic/covalent character of U-O bond is weakened by the tensile strain and there will occur an insulator to metal transition at strain over 0.30. 展开更多

Confining stresses serve as a pivotal determinant in shaping the behavior of grouted rock bolts.Nonetheless, prior investigations have oversimplified the three-dimensional stress state, primarily assuming hydrostatic stress conditions.Under these conditions,it is assumed that the intermediate principal stress(σ_(2))equals the minimum principal stress(σ_(3)).This assumption overlooks the potential variations in magnitudes of in situ stress conditions along all three directions near an underground opening where a rock bolt is installed. In this study,a series of push tests was meticulously conducted under triaxial conditions. These tests involved applying non-uniform confining stresses(σ_(2)≠σ_(3))to cubic specimens, aiming to unveil the previously overlooked influence of intermediate principal stresses on the strength properties of rock bolts. The results show that as the confining stresses increase from zero to higher levels, the pre-failure behavior changes from linear to nonlinear forms, resulting in an increase in initial stiffness from 2.08 kN/mm to 32.51 kN/mm.The load-displacement curves further illuminate distinct post-failure behavior at elevated levels of confining stresses, characterized by enhanced stiffness.Notably, the peak load capacity ranged from 27.9 kN to 46.5 kN as confining stresses advanced from σ_(2)=σ_(3)=0 to σ_(2)=20 MPa and σ_(3)=10 MPa.Additionally, the outcomes highlight an influence of confining stress on the lateral deformation of samples.Lower levels of confinement prompt overall dilation in lateral deformation, while higher confinements maintain a state of shrinkage.Furthermore, diverse failure modes have been identified, intricately tied to the arrangement of confining stresses.Lower confinements tend to induce a splitting mode of failure, whereas higher loads bring about a shift towards a pure interfacial shear-off and shear-crushed failure mechanism. 展开更多

Based on the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) criteria,105 pullout specimens were tested to investigate the effect of different rib geometries on bond strength of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebars embedded in concrete. Two kinds of conventional reinforcing rebars were also studied for comparison. Each rebar was embedded in a 150 mm concrete cube, with the embedded length being four times the rebar diameter. The experimental parameters were the rebar type, rebar component, rebar diameter, rebar surface texture, rib height, rib spacing and rib width. Theoretical analysis was also carried out to explain the experimental phenomena and results. The experimental and theoretical results indicated that the bond strength of GFRP rebars was about 13%~35% lower than that of steel rebars. The bond strength and bond-slip behavior of the specially machined rebars varied with the rebar type, rebar diameter, rebar surface texture, rib height, rib spacing and rib width. Using the results, design recom-mendations were made concerning optimum rib geometries of GFRP ribbed rebars with superior bond-slip characteristics, which concluded that the optimal rib spacing of ribbed rebars is the same as the rebar diameter, and that the optimal rib height is 6% of the rebar diameter. 展开更多

Aim To evaluate the interactive effects of different self- adhesive resin cements and tribochemical treatment on bond strength to zirconia. Methodology The following self-adhesive resin cements for bonding two zirconia blocks were evaluated: Maxcem (MA), Smartcem (SM), Rely X Unicem Aplicap (UN), Breeze (BR), Biscem (BI), Set (SE), and Clearfil SA luting (CL). The specimens were grouped according to conditioning as follows: Group 1, polishing with 600 grit polishing paper; Group 2, silica coating with 110 μm Al2O3 particles which modified with silica; and, Group 3, tribochemical treatment - silica coating + silanization. Specimens were stored in distilled water at 37℃ for 24 hours before testing shear bond strength. Results Silica coating and tribochemical treatment significantly increased the bond strength of the MA, UN, BR, B1, SE and CL to zirconia compared to #600 polishing. For both #600 polished and silica coating treatments, MDP- containing self-adhesive resin cement CL had the highest bond strengths to zirconia. Conclusion Applying silica coating and tribochemical treatment improved the bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement to zirconia, especially for CL. 展开更多

In many circumstances, dissimilar metals have to be bonded together and the resulting joint interfaces must typically sustain mechanical and/or electrical forces without failure, which is not possible by fusion welding processes. The melting points of magnesium(Mg)and copper(Cu)have a significant difference(nearly 400℃)and this may lead to a large difference in the microstructure and joint performance of Mg-Cu joints. However, diffusion bonding can be used to join these alloys without much difficulty. This work analyses the effect of parameters on diffusion layer thickness, hardness and strength of magnesium-copper dissimilar joints. The experiments were conducted using three-factor,five-level,central composite rotatable design matrix.Empirical relationships were developed to predict diffusion layer thickness, hardness and strength using response surface methodology. It is found that bonding temperature has predominant effect on bond characteristics.Joints fabricated at a bonding temperature of 450℃, bonding pressure of 12 MPa and bonding time of 30 min exhibited maximum shear strength and bonding strength of 66 and 81 MPa, respectively. 展开更多

The effect of freezing and thawing cycles on mechanical properties of concrete (compressive, splitting tensile strength) was experimentally investigated. According to the pullout test data of three kinds of deformed steel bars, the bond stress-slip curves after freezing and thawing were obtained. The empirical equations of peak bond strength were proposed that the damage accounted for effects of freezing and thawing cycle. Meanwhile, the mechanism of bond deterioration between steel bars and concrete after freezing and thawing cycles was discussed. All these conclusions will be useful to the durability design and reliability calculation of RC structures in cold region. 展开更多

The porcelain fracture caused by low metal-ceramic bond strength is a critical issue in porcelain fused to metal(PFM) restorations. Surface roughening methods, such as sand blasting, acid etching and alkaline degreasing for the metal matrix are used to increase bond strength. However, the metal matrix of PFM processed by selective laser melting(SLM) has natural rough surface. To explore the effect of the original roughness on metal-ceramic bond strength, two groups of specimen are fabricated by SLM. One group of specimen surface is polished smooth while another group remains the original rough surface. The dental porcelain is fused to the specimens' surfaces according to the ISO 9693:1999 standard. To gain the bond strength, a three-point bending test is carried out and X ray energy spectrum analysis(EDS), scanning electron microscope(SEM) are used to show fracture mode. The results show that the mean bond strength is 116.5 16 MPa of the group with rough surface(Ra= 17.2), and the fracture mode is cohesive. However, when the surface is smooth (Ra =3.8), the mean bond strength is 74.5 MPa _+ 5 MPa and the fracture mode is mixed. The original surface with prominent structures formed by the partly melted powder particles, not only increases surface roughness but also significantly improves the bond strength by forming strong mechanical lock effect. Statistical analysis (Student's t-test) demonstrates a significant difference (p〈0.05) of the mean value of bond strength between the two groups. The experiments indicate the natural rough surface can enhance the metal-ceramic bond strength to over four times the minimum value (25 MPa) of the ISO 9693:1999 standard. It is found that the natural rough surface of SLM-made PFM can eliminate the porcelain collapse defect produced by traditional casting method in PFM restorations. 展开更多

The effect of electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE) on bond strength between steel bar and freeze-thaw concrete contaminated by chloride was experimentally investigated for beam specimens with dimensions of 100 mm × 100 mm × 400 ram. During the experiment, 3% NaC1 (vs mass of cement, mass fraction) was mixed into concrete to simulate chloride contamination, and the specimens experienced 0, 25, 50, 75 freeze-thaw cycles before ECE. In the process of ECE, different current densities and durations were adopted. It is indicated that the bond strength between reinforcement and concrete decreases with the increase of freeze-thaw cycles; the more the current and the electric quantity of ECE are, the more the loss of bond strength is; and the largest loss is up to 58.7%. So, it is important to choose proper parameters of ECE for the reinforced concrete structures contaminated by chloride and subjected to freeze-thaw cycles. 展开更多

Retrofitting of existing ancient and modern timber structures has been an important project recently. And it triggers a need of excellent strengthening methods,so does the strengthening of newly built architecture.Traditional strengthening methods have shortcomings such as high costing and destroying the aesthetic of the structure, many of which can be overcome by means of using fiber reinforced polymer(FRP)composites. However, the behavior of FRP-towood systems has yet to be thoroughly researched compared with their FRP-toconcrete or FRP-to-steel counterparts. As FRP retrofitting and strengthening timber structures has a promising future, better understanding of their failure modes will enable more precise designs balancing safety and cost.Three of the most common FRP-to-wood systems in the literature are discussed in this paper, namely, the externally bonded reinforcement(EBR),the near-surface mounted(NSM)and the glued-in rods(GiR)techniques.Debonding of the FRP from the substrate is one of the most common failure modes, which exhibits the significance of the interface bond between FRP laminates and wood.Hence, bond properties and behavior of FRP-to-wood composite systems are described, parameters influencing the composite action are summarized in this paper, previous works on the bond interface of FRP and timber element are reviewed and future topics are also suggested. This work can provide a reference for future research and engineering applications. 展开更多

In this study, we evaluate the influence of post surface pre-treatments on the bond strength of four different cements to glass fiber posts. Eighty extracted human maxillary central incisors and canines were endodontically treated and standardized post spaces were prepared. Four post pre-treatments were tested: (i) no pre-treatment (NS, control), (ii) sandblasting (SA), (iii) silanization (SI) and (iv) sandblasting followed by silanization (SS). Per pre-treatment, four dual-cure resin cements were used for luting posts: DMG LUXACORE Smartmix Dual, Multilink Automix, RelyX Unicem and Panavia F2.0. All the specimens were subjected to micro push-out test. Two-way analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc tests were performed (α=0.05) to analyze the data. Bond strength was significantly affected by the type of resin cement, and bond strengths of RelyX Unicem and Panavia F2.0 to the fiber posts were significantly higher than the other cement groups. Sandblasting significantly increased the bond strength of DMG group to the fiber posts. 展开更多

The effect of steel corrosion on the behavior of bond between steel and the surrounding concrete was investigated. Pullout tests were carried out to demonstrate bond stress-slip response for reinforcing steel bars of a series of corrosion level. Specimens either confined or unconfined were investigated for evaluation of the effect of confinement on bond strength and failure mode. Also, the tests were analyzed using nonlinear finite element analysis. It was shown that for both confined and unconfined steel bars, bond strength generally decreases as the corrosion level increases when corrosion level is relatively high. Confinement was demonstrated to provide excellent means to conteract bond loss for corroded reinforcing steel bars. It was shown that unconfined specimens generally split at a small slip with a large crack width and result in splitting failure while confined specimens contribute to a small crack width and generally cause a pullout failure. The analysis results agree reasonably well with the experiments. 展开更多

In order to improve the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of Mg alloys, the equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE)was employed to fabricate the Mg-5Gd-5Y/Mg-2Zn-1Gd(GW55/ZG21)laminated composites. After fabrication and annealing treatment, the microstructural evolution, phase constitution, microhardness, and bonding strength were investigated on the bonding interface zone of GW55/ZG21 laminated composites. The bonding interface zone of GW55/ZG21 laminated composites comprises a lot of Mg3(Y,Gd)2Zn3 particles along the bonding interface, some rod Mg24(Y,Gd)5 phases on GW55 side, and a precipitation free zone(PFZ)on ZG21 side. After annealing treatment,Mg3(Y,Gd)2Zn3 particles along the bonding interface increase, rod Mg24(Y,Gd)5 phases on GW55 side decrease, and PFZ is broadened.Meanwhile, the hardness on the bonding interface zone decreases and the bonding strength increases from 126 MPa to 162 MPa. 展开更多

Based on traditional twin-roll casting process,Invar/Cu clad strips were successfully fabricated by using solid Invar alloy strip and molten Cu under conditions of high temperature, high pressure and plastic deformation.A series of tests including tensile test, bending test,T-type peeling test and scanning electron microscope(SEM)and energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS)measurements were carried out to analyze the mechanical properties of Invar/Cu clad strips and the micro-morphology of tensile fracture surfaces and bonding interfaces. The results indicate that no delamination phenomenon occurs during the compatible deformation of Invar/Cu in bending test and only one stress platform exists in the tensile stress-strain curve when the bonding strength is large. On the contrary, different mechanical properties of Invar and Cu lead to delamination phenomenon during the uniaxial tensile test, which determines that two stress platforms occur on the stress-strain curve of Invar/Cu clad strips when two elements experience necking. The average peeling strength can be increased from13.85to42.31N/mm after heat treatment at800℃for1h,and the observation of the Cu side at peeling interface shows that more Fe is adhered on the Cu side after the heat treatment. All above illustrate that heat treatment can improve the strength of the bonding interface of Invar/Cu clad strips. 展开更多

The effect of saliva contamination on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets, at various stages of the bonding procedure using a new self-etch primer was studied. The samples were divided into 4 groups according to 4 different enamel surface conditions: Group A: dry; Group B: saliva contamination before priming; Group C: saliva contamination after priming, and Group D: saliva contamination before and after priming. Stainless steel brackets were bonded in each test group with a light-cured composite resin (TransbondXT 3M). The shear bond strength was determined in the first 30 min after bonding. The analysis of variance indicated that the shear bond strengths of the 4 groups were significantly different (F=11.89, P<0.05). Tukey HSD tests indicated that contamination both before and after the application of the acid-etch primer resulted in a significantly lower (=4.6±1.7 MPa) shear bond strength than either the control group (=8.8±1.9 MPa) or the groups where contamination occurred either before (=7.9±2.0 MPa) or after (=6.9±1.5 MPa) the application of the primer. It was concluded that the new acid-etch primer could maintain adequate shear bond strength if contamination occurred either before or after the application of the primer. On the other hand, contamination both before and after the application of the primer could significantly reduce the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets. 展开更多

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long time antibacterial properties and shear bond strength of experimental nano silver-containing cements (NSC). Nano silver base inorganic antibacterial powder was added to the reinforced glass ionomer cement at five different weight ratios to obtain a series of nano silver-containing cements, then the antibacterial properties of three orthodontic cement products and five NSC samples were evaluated by the direct contact test (DCT) and the agar diffusion test (ADT). The DCT, which was based on turbidness determination of bacterial growth in 96-well microtiter plates, was performed in both fresh and aged for 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, and 8 weeks tested materials. The shear bond strengthes of three orthodontic cement products and five NSC samples were examined using a universal testing machine. The ADT results indicated that there were no significant differences between NSCs and ORTHO LC fresh specimens. In the DCT experiment, all fresh silver nanoparticles-containing tested samples presented powerful antibacterial properties, but they gradually lost the effective antimicrobial agents with the extension of aging time. Finally, none of the tested materials maintained its antibacterial property after aging for 8 weeks. A gradually decreasing trend of bond strength presented with the increasing incorporation of nano silver base inorganic antibacterial powder into the glass ionomer cement, even though all the tested material specimens reached the ideal bond strength range. We may conclude that NSCs can contribute to decrease the demineralization rate around brackets without compromising bond strength. 展开更多

Diffusion bonding of as-cast Mg−6Gd−3Y magnesium alloy was carried out at temperatures of 400−480℃ with bonding pressure of 6 MPa for 90 min.Diffusion bonded joints were solution treated at 495℃ for 14 h and then aged at 200℃ for 30 h.Microstructures and mechanical properties of joints were analyzed. The results showed that rare earth elements and their compounds gathering at bonding interface hindered the grain boundary migration crossing bonding interface.Tensile strength of as-bonded and as-solution treated joints increased firstly and then decreased with the bonding temperature increasing due to the combined effects of grain coarsening and solid-solution strengthening.As-bonded and solution-treated joints fractured at matrix except the joint bonded at 400℃,while aged joints fractured at bonding interface. The highest ultimate tensile strength of 279 MPa with elongation of 2.8%was found in joint bonded at 440℃ with solution treatment followed by aging treatment. 展开更多
