Spatial-seasonal patterns in fish diversity in Haizhou Bay were studied based on stratified random surveys conducted in 2011.Principal component analysis was conducted to distinguish different diversity components, and the relationships among 11 diversity indices were explored.Generalized additive models were constructed to examine the environmental effects on diversity indices.Eleven diversity indices were grouped into four components:(1) species numbers and richness,(2) heterogeneous indices,(3) evenness,and(4) taxonomic relatedness. The results show that diversity indices among different components are complementary.Spatial patterns show that fish diversity was higher in coastal areas, which was affected by complex bottom topography and spatial variations of water mass and currents.Seasonal trends could be best explained by the seasonal migration of dominant fish species.Fish diversity generally declined with increasing depth except for taxonomic distinctness, which increased with latitude. In addition, bottom temperature had a significant effect on diversity index of richness. These results indicate that substrate complexity and environmental gradients had important influences on fish diversity patterns, and these factors should be considered in fishery resource management and conservation.Furthermore, diversity in two functional groups(demersal/pelagic fishes) was influenced by different environmental factors. Therefore, the distribution of individual species or new indicators in diversity should be applied to examine spatio-seasonal variations in fish diversity. 展开更多

Bottom temperature variation (BTV) is a serious problem in determining the thermal gra- dient and heat flow of the sediments in shallow seas. The water depth of the East China Sea shelf is mostly below 150m, and the heat flow measurement is strongly affected by BTV. Following a statistical algorithm, we rechecked the temperature and thermal conductivity data of the cruises KX90-1 and KX91-1, carried out by a cooperation program of China and Japan, and calculate the heat flow in a site without long-term temperature record. The calculated heat flow in the site was 58.6±3.6 mW/m2, being just within the range of the drill heat flow value of East China Sea shelf. The inversed amplitude spectrum of BTV has a peak in frequency of 1/10 per year, and the annual component is also an important part. Comparison with two lakes of Lake Greifensee and Lac Leman (i.e. Lake Geneva), which are in different water depth, revealed that with increasing water depth, the peak of amplitude spectrum moved towards low frequency components. The heat flow values calculated in this paper and from petroleum bore hole in East China Sea shelf are much more close to that in southeast China than in Okinawa Trough. 展开更多

Frontal upwelling is an important phenomenon in summer in the Yellow Sea(YS)and plays an essential role in the distribution of nutrients and biological species. In this paper,a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model is applied to investigate the characteristics and influencing factors of frontal upwelling in the YS.The results show that the strength and distribution of frontal upwelling are largely dependent on the topography and bottom temperature fronts. The frontal upwelling in the YS is stronger and narrower near the eastern coast than near the western coast due to the steeper shelf slope. Moreover, external forcings, such as the meridional wind speed and air temperature in summer and the air temperature in the preceding winter and spring, have certain influences on the strength of frontal upwelling. An increase in air temperature in the previous winter and spring weakens the frontal upwelling in summer;in contrast,an increase in air temperature in summer strengthens the frontal upwelling. When the southerly wind in summer increases, the upwelling intensifies in the western YS and weakens in the eastern YS.The air temperature influences the strength of upwelling by changing the baroclinicity in the frontal region.Furthermore, the meridional wind speed in summer affects frontal upwelling via Ekman pumping. 展开更多
