This study explores the application of single photon detection(SPD)technology in underwater wireless optical communication(UWOC)and analyzes the influence of different modulation modes and error correction coding types on communication performance.The study investigates the impact of on-off keying(OOK)and 2-pulse-position modulation(2-PPM)on the bit error rate(BER)in single-channel intensity and polarization multiplexing.Furthermore,it compares the error correction performance of low-density parity check(LDPC)and Reed-Solomon(RS)codes across different error correction coding types.The effects of unscattered photon ratio and depolarization ratio on BER are also verified.Finally,a UWOC system based on SPD is constructed,achieving 14.58 Mbps with polarization OOK multiplexing modulation and 4.37 Mbps with polarization 2-PPM multiplexing modulation using LDPC code error correction. 展开更多

In this paper,the covert age of information(CAoI),which characterizes the timeliness and covertness performance of communication,is first investigated in the short-packet covert communication with time modulated retrodirective array(TMRDA).Specifically,the TMRDA is designed to maximize the antenna gain in the target direction while the side lobe is sufficiently suppressed.On this basis,the covertness constraint and CAoI are derived in closed form.To facilitate the covert transmission design,the transmit power and block-length are jointly optimized to minimize the CAoI,which demonstrates the trade-off between covertness and timelessness.Our results illustrate that there exists an optimal block-length that yields the minimum CAoI,and the presented optimization results can achieve enhanced performance compared with the fixed block-length case.Additionally,we observe that smaller beam pointing error at Bob leads to improvements in CAoI. 展开更多

In the intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) optical wireless communication systems, a direct-current-biased adaptive modulation scheme is proposed to guarantee the nonnegative property of transmitted signals, and the MIMO channel is converted to a parallel channel by using a singular value decomposition. Besides, a QR decomposition and successive interference cancellation based adaptive modulation scheme is proposed, and the MIMO channel can be simplified to a parallel channel under the bit error ratio (BER) target constraint. The power is optimally allocated to each sub-channel to maximize the data rate. Simulation results show that the proposed adaptive modulation schemes can effectively improve the transmission rate of the systems under the BER target and constant optical power constraints. The proposed adaptive modulation schemes make use of the multiplexing gain of the MIMO techniques, and can further improve the spectrum efficiency of optical wireless systems. 展开更多

A novel modulation recognition algorithm is proposed by introducing a Chen-Harker-Kanzow-Smale (CHKS) smooth function into the C-support vector machine deformation algorithm. A set of seven characteristic parameters is selected from a range of parameters of communication signals including instantaneous amplitude, phase, and frequency. And the Newton-Armijo algorithm is utilized to train the proposed algorithm, namely, smooth CHKS smooth support vector machine (SCHKS-SSVM). Compared with the existing algorithms, the proposed algorithm not only solves the non-differentiable problem of the second order objective function, but also reduces the recognition error. It significantly improves the training speed and also saves a large amount of storage space through large-scale sorting problems. The simulation results show that the recognition rate of the algorithm can batch training. Therefore, the proposed algorithm is suitable for solving the problem of high dimension and its recognition can exceed 95% when the signal-to-noise ratio is no less than 10 dB. 展开更多

Wireless data traffic has expanded at a rate that reminds us of Moore’s prediction for integrated circuits in recent years,necessitating ongoing attempts to supply wireless systems with ever-larger data rates in the near future,despite the under-deployment of 5G networks.Terahertz(THz)communication has been considered a viable response to communication blackout due to the rapid development of THz technology and sensors.THz communication has a high frequency,which allows for better penetration.It is a fast expanding and evolving industry,driven by an increase in wireless traffic volume and data transfer speeds.A THz modulator based on a hybrid metasurface was devised and built in this work.The device’s modulation capabilities were modelled and proved experimentally.The electrolyte is an ion-gel medium implanted between graphene and metasurface,and the active material is graphene.On the metasurface,the interaction between the THz wave and graphene is improved.Additionally,an external bias voltage was employed to actively regulate the THz waves by tuning the electrical conductivity of graphene.The results show that with a minimal bias voltage,the device can achieve a modulation depth of up to 73%at the resonant frequency.Furthermore,during the modulation process,the resonance frequency remains almost constant.As a result,the proposed gadget offers a unique tool for substantial THz amplitude modulation at low voltages. 展开更多

Reconfigurable intelligent surface(RIS)assisted dual-function radar communications(DFRC)system is a promising integrated sensing and communication(ISAC)technology for future 6G.In this paper,we propose a scheme of RIS-assisted DFRC system based on frequency shifted chirp spread spectrum index modulation(RDFI)for secure communications.The proposed RDFI achieves the sensing and transmission of target location information in its radar and communication modes,respectively.In both modes,the frequency-shifted chirp spread spectrum index modulation(FSCSS-IM)signal is used as the baseband signal for radar and communications,so that the signal sent by the radar also carries information.This scheme implements the RIS-assisted beamforming in the communication mode through the azimuth information of the target acquired in the radar mode,so that the signal received from the eavesdropper is distorted in amplitude and phase.In addition,this paper analyzes the radar measurement accuracy and communication security of the FSCSS-IM signal using ambiguity function and secrecy rate(SR)analysis,respectively.Simulation results show that RDFI achieves both excellent bit error rate(BER)performance and physical layer security of communications. 展开更多

This paper proposes a high-throughput short reference differential chaos shift keying cooperative communication system with the aid of code index modulation,referred to as CIM-SR-DCSK-CC system.In the proposed CIM-SR-DCSK-CC system,the source transmits information bits to both the relay and destination in the first time slot,while the relay not only forwards the source information bits but also sends new information bits to the destination in the second time slot.To be specific,the relay employs an N-order Walsh code to carry additional log_(2)N information bits,which are superimposed onto the SRDCSK signal carrying the decoded source information bits.Subsequently,the superimposed signal carrying both the source and relay information bits is transmitted to the destination.Moreover,the theoretical bit error rate(BER)expressions of the proposed CIMSR-DCSK-CC system are derived over additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN)and multipath Rayleigh fading channels.Compared with the conventional DCSKCC system and SR-DCSK-CC system,the proposed CIM-SR-DCSK-CC system can significantly improve the throughput without deteriorating any BER performance.As a consequence,the proposed system is very promising for the applications of the 6G-enabled lowpower and high-rate communication. 展开更多

As an alternative to satellite communications,multi-hop relay networks can be deployed for maritime long-distance communications.Distinct from terrestrial environment,marine radio signals are affected by many factors,e.g.,weather conditions,evaporation ducting,and ship rocking caused by waves.To ensure the data transmission reliability,the block Markov superposition transmission(BMST)codes,which are easily configurable and have predictable performance,are applied in this study.Meanwhile,the physical-layer network coding(PNC)scheme with spatial modulation(SM)is adopted to improve the spectrum utilization.For the BMST-SMPNC system,we propose an iterative algorithm,which utilizes the channel observations and the a priori information from BMST decoder,to compute the soft information corresponding to the XORed bits constructed by the relay node.The results indicate that the proposed scheme outperforms the convolutional coded SM-PNC over fast-fading Rician channels.Especially,the performance can be easily improved in high spatial correlation maritime channel by increasing the memory m. 展开更多

This paper conducts a research on modulation characteristics of blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) used in a visible-light communication (VLC) system. Through analysis of the modulation characteristics of LEDs with different emitting sizes, we find that there is a similar linear relationship between LED’s 3dB bandwidth and the operation current density. This experiment also shows that high series resistance is one major issue that limits our LED's modulation speed. To further improve the LED bandwidth, the resistance can be reduced by optimizing device layout as well as reducing material bulk resistance. Clearly, this study provides an approach to increase the modulation bandwidth of GaN-based LEDs for VLC systems. 展开更多

An electro-absorption(EA)modulator is one of key components for optical fiber communications due to the high speed,small size,low voltage and integration ability with other semiconductor devices.A 40 Gb/s InGaAsP/InP multiplequantum-well(MQW)EA modulator monolithically integrated with a semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA)was fabricated for digital communications.The modulator capacitance was reduced to obtain 40 GHz bandwidth,and the SOA section helped reduce the insertion loss from 18 dB to 3 dB.InGaAlAs/InP MQW EA modulators have also been fabricated and characterized for analog optical fiber communications.A low driving voltage of 2.7 V and high spurious free dynamic range of 107 dB·Hz2/3 were estimated by static and dynamic measurements. 展开更多

As the competition for marine resources is increasingly fierce,the security of underwater acoustic communication has attracted a great deal of attention.The information and location of the communicating platform can be leaked during the traditional underwater acoustic communication technology.According to the unique advantages of chaos communication,we put forward a novel communication scheme using complex parameter modulation and the complex Lorenz system.Firstly,we design a feedback controller and parameter update laws in a complex-variable form with rigorous mathematical proofs(while many previous references on the real-variable form were only special cases in which the imaginary part was zero),which can be realized in practical engineering;then we design a new communication scheme employing parameter modulation.The main parameter spaces of the complex Lorenz system are discussed,then they are adopted in our communication scheme.We also find that there exist parametric attractors in the complex Lorenz system.We make numerical simulations in two channels for digital signals and the simulations verify our conclusions. 展开更多

Modulation signal classification in communication systems can be considered a pattern recognition problem.Earlier works have focused on several feature extraction approaches such as fractal feature,signal constellation reconstruction,etc.The recent advent of deep learning(DL)models makes it possible to proficiently classify the modulation signals.In this view,this study designs a chaotic oppositional satin bowerbird optimization(COSBO)with bidirectional long term memory(BiLSTM)model for modulation signal classification in communication systems.The proposed COSBO-BiLSTM technique aims to classify the different kinds of digitally modulated signals.In addition,the fractal feature extraction process takes place by the use of Sevcik Fractal Dimension(SFD)approach.Moreover,the modulation signal classification process takes place using BiLSTM with fully convolutional network(BiLSTM-FCN).Furthermore,the optimal hyperparameter adjustment of the BiLSTM-FCN technique takes place by the use of COSBO algorithm.In order to ensure the enhanced classification performance of the COSBO-BiLSTM model,a wide range of simulations were carried out.The experimental results highlighted that the COSBO-BiLSTM technique has accomplished improved performance over the existing techniques. 展开更多

In recent years,the need for a fast,efficient and a reliable wireless network has increased dramatically.Numerous 5G networks have already been tested while a few are in the early stages of deployment.In noncooperative communication scenarios,the recognition of digital signal modulations assists people in identifying the communication targets and ensures an effective management over them.The recent advancements in both Machine Learning(ML)and Deep Learning(DL)models demand the development of effective modulation recognition models with self-learning capability.In this background,the current research article designs aDeep Learning enabled Intelligent Modulation Recognition of Communication Signal(DLIMR-CS)technique for next-generation networks.The aim of the proposed DLIMR-CS technique is to classify different kinds of digitally-modulated signals.In addition,the fractal feature extraction process is appliedwith the help of the Sevcik Fractal Dimension(SFD)approach.Then,the extracted features are fed into the Deep Variational Autoencoder(DVAE)model for the classification of the modulated signals.In order to improve the classification performance of the DVAE model,the Tunicate Swarm Algorithm(TSA)is used to finetune the hyperparameters involved in DVAE model.A wide range of simulations was conducted to establish the enhanced performance of the proposed DLIMR-CS model.The experimental outcomes confirmed the superior recognition rate of the DLIMR-CS model over recent state-of-the-art methods under different evaluation parameters. 展开更多

LSTM-Based Adaptive Modulation and Coding for Satellite-to-Ground Communications

Satellite communication develops rapidly due to its global coverage and is unrestricted to the ground environment. However, compared with the traditional ground TCP/IP network, a satellite-to-ground link has a more extensive round trip time(RTT) and a higher packet loss rate,which takes more time in error recovery and wastes precious channel resources. Forward error correction(FEC) is a coding method that can alleviate bit error and packet loss, but how to achieve high throughput in the dynamic network environment is still a significant challenge. Inspired by the deep learning technique, this paper proposes a signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) based adaptive coding modulation method. This method can maximize channel utilization while ensuring communication quality and is suitable for satellite-to-ground communication scenarios where the channel state changes rapidly. We predict the SNR using the long short-term memory(LSTM) network that considers the past channel status and real-time global weather. Finally, we use the optimal matching rate(OMR) to evaluate the pros and cons of each method quantitatively. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that our proposed LSTM-based method outperforms the state-of-the-art prediction algorithms significantly in mean absolute error(MAE). Cooperative transmission is a promising way to improve system performance in orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) based cellular networks.This paper proposes two heuristic cooperation schemes including relay selection and resource allocation using hierarchical modulation (HM) to fully exploit the radio resources in cellular networks where user equipments (UEs) relay for each other.The relay selection procedure considers both the channel conditions and the energies left in relays to make the cooperative communications behave better.To mitigate the spectrum efficiency loss due to the half-duplex mode,the bits of relayaided UE and its relay (which is also a UE) are transmitted simultaneously in one sub-channel using HM to improve the utilization efficiency of sub-channels.Besides,time resources are used effectively with the adaptively changed proportion of the two sub-frames divided for relay transmission.Simulation results show that the proposed schemes can improve the spectrum efficiency compared with the traditional schemes. 展开更多

A scheme of chaotic secure communication based on the parameter modulation and the inversion of a chaotic dynamical system is analyzed. According to this scheme, information signal is modulated by a bifurcation parameter of the transmitter, which is in chaotic state. In the receiver, a proportional integral feedback demodulator is used to demodulate the information signal, which only uses the available synchronizing error as well as stateness of receiver. The purpose of this demodulator is proposed to overcome the influence of differentiation operation, nonlinear part and singularities in chaotic system. Numerical simulation is proposed to show the effectiveness of this demodulator. 展开更多
