This paper introduces the characteristics of Computed Tomography (CT) technology and reviews its history, current situation, representative achievements, and use of using CT technology on frozen soil study, including auxiliary equipment specially de- signed for frozen soil studies. CT numbers are used to analyze frozen soil internal structure change, defining and exploring dam- age evolution, and use of CT images on observing soil mesostructure. Finally, this paper presents existing problems confronted by using CT in frozen soil studies, possible solutions and challenges, among which, we introduce high quality CT image processing for frozen soils, and relations between CT number change and each component change on frozen soil samples within the region of interest. It is shown that present CT technology is one of the most ideal and effective technology to study frozen soil mesostructure using non-desmactive testing. CT technology will play a key role in the study and development in the field of frozen soil by means of auxiliary equipment and the digital imaging processing. 展开更多

With the rapid development of submarine oil and gas,the security issues of submarine oil and gas pipeline become increasingly prominent, and regular inspection of submarine pipeline is particularly important. Therefore,a submarine pipeline inspection robot system based on CT technology to solve the problems such as low traditional manual inspection efficiency, high labor cost, low security and backward inspection methods.Based on the platform of ROV robot, carrying CT scanner as an external detection device, the system is used for non-invasive inspection of submarine pipeline, which is safe and harmless, with good economy, high mobility, and strong environmental adaptability.Compared with traditional technology,CT scanner’s external inspection technology used in the system avoids the damage to the external protective layer of the pipeline in the measurement of pipeline wall thickness.Meantime,it can provide the tomography of the pipe wall and the composition of the sediment material on the inside wall, which fills the gap in this technical field in China.According to the test, the robot has the characteristics of stable adsorption, flexible movement, and clear pipeline CT scanning image, and can realize the intelligent inspection of submarine pipeline. 展开更多

With the application of X-ray computed tomography(CT) technology of C80 high-strength concrete with polypropylene fiber at elevated temperatures, the microscopic damage evolution process observation and image building could be obtained, based on the statistics theory and numerical analysis of the combination of concrete internal defects extension and evolution regularity of microscopic structure. The expermental results show that the defect rate has changed at different temperatures and can determine the concrete degradation threshold temperatures. Also, data analysis can help to establish the evolution equation between the defect rate and the effect of temperature damage, and identify that the addition of polypropylene fibers in the high strength concrete at high temperature can improve cracking resistance. 展开更多

Due to the low permeability of tight reservoirs, throats play a significant role in controlling fluid flow.Although many studies have been conducted to investigate fluid flow in throats in the microscale domain, comparatively fewer works have been devoted to study the effect of adsorption boundary layer(ABL)in throats based on the digital rock method.By considering an ABL,we investigate its effects on fluid flow.We build digital rock model based on computed tomography technology. Then, microscopic pore structures are extracted with watershed segmentation and pore geometries are meshed through Delaunay triangulation approach. Finally, using the meshed digital simulation model and finite element method,we investigate the effects of viscosity and thickness of ABL on microscale flow. Our results demonstrate that viscosity and thickness of ABL are major factors that significantly hinder fluid flow in throats. 展开更多

There is major interest within the bio-engineering community in developing accurate and non-invasive means for visualizing, modeling and analyzing bone micro-structures. Bones are composed of hierarchical bio-composite materials characterized by complex multi-scale structural geometry. The process of reconstructing a volumetric bone model is usually based upon CT/MRI scanned images. Meshes generated by current commercial CAD systems cannot be used for further modeling or analysis. Moreover, recently developed methods are only capable of capturing the micro-structure for small volumes (biopsy samples). This paper examines the problem of re-meshing a 3D computerized model of bone micro- structure. The proposed method is based on the following phases: defining sub-meshes of the original model in a grid-based structure, remeshing each sub-mesh using the neural network (NN) method, and merging the sub-meshes into a global mesh. Applying the NN method to micro-structures proved to be quite time consuming. Therefore, a parallel, grid-based approach was applied, yielding a simpler structure in each grid cell. The performance of this method is analyzed, and the method is demonstrated on real bone micro-structures. Furthermore, the method may be used as the basis for generating a multi-resolution bone geometric model. 展开更多
