Investors value more the cash dividends and the cash holdings of firms with lower ownership control than those of firms with higher ownership control. This is more consistent with the tunneling hypothesis. However, when investment opportunities are considered, the free cash flow hypothesis better explains firms' dividend policy. Investors value more the cash dividends of firms with fewer investment opportunities and higher probability of expropriation. This study indicates that investors are concerned with the potential asset expropriation through cash payouts, unless firms possess high growth opportunities.展开更多

We find that managers pursue different patterns in UK from that in US when making dividend policy. A positive and significant association between dividend changes and the growth of future earnings is observed in the immediately following year after dividend announced There isn't significant link in the longer future. These phenomena are caused by managers' near-eyesight in UK market. In addition, an interesting finding is that dividend decreases have larger negative influence on earnings growth than positive impact on earnings prospects of dividend increases. This is consistent with the infrequent occurrence of dividend reduction.展开更多

Family firms have a significantly lower proportion of independent directors than non-family firms, which is consistent with the idea that family members dominate the board of directors and that family shareholders are common in publicly-traded firms. The author analyzed 390 dividend change announcements in Portugal over the period from 1991 to 2010 using a panel data approach. The results show no evidence of a significant market reaction to dividend change announcements, providing no evidence in support of the dividend-signaling hypothesis in the context of family firms. This conclusion agrees with previous studies in which there was no distinction between family and non-family firms. Empirical results show that family firms engage in lower payouts than their non-family counterparts, giving some supports to the expropriation hypothesis. This finding may indicate that families expropriate the wealth of shareholders through lower dividends. This result is also consistent with the clientele theory of dividends.展开更多
