The neuroprotective effects of skin-derived precursor Schwann cells may be attributable to the release of growth factors that nourish host cells. In this study, we first established a cellular model of Parkinson’s disease using 6-hydroxydopamine. When SH-SY5 Y cells were pretreated with conditioned medium from skin-derived precursor Schwann cells, their activity was greatly increased. The addition of insulin-like growth factor-2 neutralizing antibody markedly attenuated the neuroprotective effects of skin-derived precursor Schwann cells. We also found that insulin-like growth factor-2 levels in the peripheral blood were greatly increased in patients with Parkinson’s disease and in a mouse model of Parkinson’s disease. Next, we pretreated cell models of Parkinson’s disease with insulin-like growth factor-2 and administered insulin-like growth factor-2 intranasally to a mouse model of Parkinson’s disease induced by 6-hydroxydopamine and found that the level of tyrosine hydroxylase, a marker of dopamine neurons, was markedly restored, α-synuclein aggregation decreased, and insulin-like growth factor-2 receptor downregulation was alleviated. Finally, in vitro experiments showed that insulin-like growth factor-2 activated the phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase(PI3 K)/AKT pathway. These findings suggest that the neuroprotective effects of skin-derived precursor Schwann cells on the central nervous system were achieved through insulinlike growth factor-2, and that insulin-like growth factor-2 may play a neuroprotective role through the insulin-like growth factor-2 receptor/PI3 K/AKT pathway. Therefore, insulin-like growth factor-2 may be an useful target for Parkinson’s disease treatment.展开更多

METHODS: This longitudinal cohort study with oneyear follow-up enrolled 1222 children aged 4 to 12 years old into an observation cohort (18 with and 318 without H. pylori ) and intervention cohort (75 with and 811 without). The 7-d triple therapy was used for eradication in the intervention cohort. The net increases of BW and BH as well serum acylated ghrelin after oneyear follow-up were compared between successful eradicated H. pylori-infected children and controls. RESULTS: In the observation cohort, the H. pylori - infected children had lower z score of BW (-1.11 ± 0.47 vs 0.35 ± 0.69, P = 0.01) and body mass index (BMI) (0.06 ± 0.45 vs 0.44 ± 0.73, P = 0.02) at enrollment and lower net BW gain after one-year follow-up (3.3 ± 2.1 kg vs 4.5 ± 2.4 kg, P = 0.04) than the non-infected controls. In the intervention cohort, the H. pylori - infected children had lower z score of BMI (0.25 ± 1.09 vs 0.68 ± 0.87, P = 0.009) and serum acylated ghrelin levels (41.8 ± 35.6 pg/mL vs 83.6 ± 24.2 pg/mL, P < 0.001) than the non-infected controls. In addition to restoring decreased serum ghrelin levels (87.7 ± 38.0 pg/mL vs 44.2 ± 39.0 pg/mL, P < 0.001), the H. pylori - infected children with successful eradication had higher net gains (P < 0.05) and increase of z scores (P < 0.05) of both BW and BH as compared with non-infected controls after one-year follow-up. CONCLUSION:H. pylori-infected children are associated with low serum acylated ghrelin and growth retardation. Successful eradication of H. pylori restores ghrelin levels and increases growth in children.展开更多

To mitigate the wind-induced sand erosion, an environmental friendly technique that helps to bind soil particles is desirable. The microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation(MICP) treatment has lately become renowned and a viable alternative to enhance the binding of sand particles(especially against wind erosion). The efficiency of Sporosarcina pasteurii bacteria in inducing calcite formation can be influenced by various factors, including the type of growth media used for bacterial culture. Most of the studies have mainly validated the efficiency of S. pasteurii bacteria usually under single growth media for the MICP treatment. However, the efficiency of S. pasteurii under different growth media on calcite formation is rarely explored. The current study explores the effect of S.pasteurii bacteria on calcite formation under the presence of three different growth media, namely, molasses(MS), tryptic soy broth(TB), and nutrient broth(NB). The three growth media have been applied in the laboratory with and without bacterial solution(control samples). Altered cementation media concentrations(0.5 and 1.0 M) with different pore volumes(PVs), namely, 0.25, 0.50, and 1.00 PV were used in sand-filled tubes for 7 and 14 treatment cycles(1 cycle=24 h). The pH and EC were measured for 12-h period in every 2 h interval, to monitor values at the time of treatment at room temperature. The calcite precipitation was confirmed using SEM(scanning electron microscope), PXRD(powder X-ray diffraction), and calcimeter tests. It was observed that MS generates lower calcite precipitation as compared with NB and TB. However, MS has the advantage of being more economical and abundant(waste product from sugar mills and refineries) as compared with other growth media(NB and TB). It was observed that the minimum and the maximum calcite precipitation using MS is 5% and 12%, respectively. The findings using MS in the present study was compared with the literature and found that precipitation of calcite using MS is effective to stabilize soil against wind erosion.展开更多

The results showed that child′s growth level was elevated with the passage of years and was the lowest in 1962, the highest in 1995 during the 38 years. The height of boy of the same age in 1995 has average increased by 9 59 cm over 1958 and girl 8 38 cm. The weight of boy of the same age in 1995 has averagely increased by 8 35 kg over 1958 and girl 5 90 kg. The chest girth of boy of the same age in 1995 has average increased by 5 69 cm over 1958 and girl 4 66 cm. The growth level of children aged 9~15 years had greater increase than others in 7~17 years of age. The average increment per 10 years of boy's height was 2 57 cm and girl's 2 26 cm. The average increment of per 10 years of boy's weight was 2 17 kg and girl's 1 56 kg. The average increment of per 10 years of boy's chest girth was 1 50 cm and girl's 1 23 cm. The analysis of the growth velocity in different period during 38 years showed the velocity in 1958~1962 was a negative value and indicated a growth retard, but the velocity in 1962~1964 was the fastest and indicated a catch up growth. And then, growth velocities of height, weight and chest girth were different in different period. The analysis of the growth curves of height, weight and chest girth showed that the 2 cross ages were 1~3 years of age ahead of time and menarche and emission also were ahead of time that during the 38 years indicated there is a child's growth acceleration in Xi′an and the trend of child's growth acceleration could continue if there are more and better nourishment, sports requisites, health care and housing conditions.展开更多

Assessing the growth of infected children is an important part of the overall care of these children which in turn improves the monitoring and prognosis of the disease. The purpose of the study was to describe and compare the growth of children living with HIV with those not infected and to identify the associated factors. Method: This was an analytical case control study conducted in a pediatric hospital, Yaoundé from January 25th to June 20th 2019. Our study population consisted of 164 children with an age range from 06 weeks to 19 years old of which we had 41 HIV-infected cases and 123 uninfected controls matched by sex and age plus or minus 02 months. Anthropometric parameters were measured according to the standards described by the WHO. The data was entered and analyzed using Epi info 3.5.4, WHO Anthro and WHO Anthropoplus softwares. The chi-square and the Fisher’s exact tests were used to compare qualitative variables, with a significance threshold set at P less than 5%. Results: Of the 41 cases, 15 (36.6%) had at least one anthropometric index (weight for age, height for age, weight for height) -2 Z score versus 05 for controls (4.1%). 36.6% of cases had growth retardation (Height for age -2 Z score) compared to 4.1% in controls with a significant difference (p = 0.000). In 18.2% of cases, underweight was found (Weight for age -2 Z score) with a significant difference compared to controls (p = 0.000). Wasting was present in 10% of infected children (P = 0.240). We found 7.3% obesity/overweight in cases and 25.2% in controls (P = 0.003). We did not find any associated factor with growth disorders in our study. Conclusion: Infected children are smaller in weight and size. After multivariate analysis, there remained a significant difference between cases and controls regarding stunting, obesity and overweight. No factors studied were associated with the growth disorders detected, which suggests that growth disorders in children and adolescents living with HIV are due to the disease itself. Hence the need for health workers is to strengthen the prevention of mother and child transmission and the monitoring of the growth of HIV-infected children in order to improve the long-term prognosis.展开更多

The results showed that the regulators could inhibit the growths of height and leaves of narcissi. Of the four regulators, the dwarfing effects of paclobatrazol (PP333) and uniconazole (S3307) on narcissi were better than those of chlorocholine (CCC) and dimethyl amino-sussinamic acid (B9). All of the regulators did not have significant effect on the root length. Moreover, the time of flowering was later for the narcissi treated with regulators than that of the control to a certain extent, and the range delayed was from 2 days to 19 days. The correlation analysis results showed that there was a significant correlation between the time of flowering and the concentrations of regulators. The ornament value of narcissi was obviously improved by using the regulators.展开更多

Since taking office, US President Donald Trump has adopted an "America First" strategy but has yet to specify a clear S&T innovation policy. However, Trump's current policies have already affected S&T innovation and his planned budget cuts will impact US growth potentials. Compared with the US, China is steadily implementing its innovation-driven development strategy with significant improvement in S& T innovation that increasingly supports economic growth. To spur future economic growth, China should steadfastly follow its S&T innovation strategy, promote the utilization of S&T innovation results, boost its economic growth potentials and make the most of global innovation resources.展开更多

文摘An authoritative parenting style has been shown to promote children’s emotion regulation in European-American family studies. However, little is known about how sleep problems and the child’s sibling status in Chinese families affect this relationship.Based on family system theory, this study attempts to better understand the relationship between authoritative parenting style and emotion regulation.Mothers of preschool children in Chinese kindergartens completed questionnaires about their children’s sleep habits, their authoritative parenting styles, and children’s emotion regulation.A total of 531 children participated in this study. Results showed that authoritative parenting was positively associated with emotional regulation.Sleep problems mediated the effects of authoritative parenting style on emotion regulation. The child’s sibling status moderated the mediating effects of sleep problems in authoritative parenting and emotion regulation relationships.Specifically, the relationship between the authoritative parenting style and sleep problems was significant for only children, while birth order had no significant influence on the authoritative parenting style and sleep problems in two-child families. These findings suggest that a lowauthoritative parenting style predicts low emotion regulation through sleep problems, and this depends on the child’s sibling status, indicating that children without siblings may impair emotion regulation due to increased sleep problems.

Successful eradication of H. pylori restores ghrelin levels and increases growth in children.

文摘Wind-induced sand erosion is a natural process, and can have several negative impacts on human health, environment, and economy. The findings using MS in the present study was compared with the literature and found that precipitation of calcite using MS is effective to stabilize soil against wind erosion.
文摘This paper aims to study the functions of two different points of view from the perspective of narratology, namely, the point of view of the adult and the one of the child,in two of Herman Melville’s early stories.By contrasting these two functions of the different perspectives, the author of this paper draws the conclusion that the child has a unique and significant perspective in Melville’s works.
文摘The Great Plague:The Diary of Alice Paynton,London 1665-1666 adopts the realistic painting style and direct writing to the painful experience, describes the situation of the Great Plague in London truly from the perspective of children, and breaks people’s cognitive expectation of children’s literature, the construction of children’s Gray inner world is completed behind the true description of the Great Plague in London with the true brushwork, which presents a different world of childlike innocence.Despite the importance of epidemics writing in literature, the child’s diary perspective of them is one of the least developed of Plague Narrative.Only when authenticity and the child’s grey interior are integrated will we reveal a true picture of society as it was.
文摘The paper analyzed the growth level and velocity to find the growth trend with the data collected in 8 investigations on growth of children aged 7~17 years in 1958~1995 in Xi′an. The analysis of the growth curves of height, weight and chest girth showed that the 2 cross ages were 1~3 years of age ahead of time and menarche and emission also were ahead of time that during the 38 years indicated there is a child's growth acceleration in Xi′an and the trend of child's growth acceleration could continue if there are more and better nourishment, sports requisites, health care and housing conditions.
文摘AIM:To compare the corneal parameters of children with congenital isolated growth hormone deficiency and healthy subjects.METHODS:In this cross-sectional,prospective study,50 cases with growth hormone(GH)deficiency treated with recombinant GH and 71 healthy children underwent a complete ophthalmic examination. The corneal hysteresis(CH),corneal resistance factor(CRF),Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure(IOPg)and corneal-compensated intraocular pressure(IOPcc)were measured with the Ocular Response Analyzer(ORA).Central corneal thickness(CCT)was measured by a ultrasonic pachymeter.RESULTS:The mean age was 13.0±3.0 years in the GH deficiency group consisting of 21 females and 29 males and 13.4±2.4 years in the healthy children group consisting of 41 females and 30 males. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups for gender or age(Chi-square test,P=0.09;independent ttest,P=0.28,respectively).The mean duration of recombinant GH therapy was 3.8±2.4y in the study group. The mean CH,CRF,IOPg and IOPcc values were 11.0±2.0,10.9±1.9,15.1±3.3,and 15.1±3.2 mm Hg respectively in the study group. The same values were 10.7±1.7,10.5±1.7,15.2±3.3,and 15.3±3.4 mm Hg respectively in the control group. The mean CCT values were 555.7±40.6,545.1±32.5μm in the study and control groups respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups for CH,CRF,IOPg,IOPcc measurements or CCT values(independent t-test,P=0.315,0.286,0.145,0.747,0.13 respectively).CONCLUSION:Our study suggests that GH deficiency does not have an effect on the corneal parameters and CCT values. This observation could be because of the duration between the beginning of disease and the diagnosis and beginning of GH therapy.

文摘BACKGROUND The TGF-β/SMAD3 and VEGFR-1 signaling pathways play important roles in gastric cancer metastasis.SMAD3 phosphorylation is a crucial prognostic marker in gastric cancer.AIM To determine the prognostic value and relationship of SMAD3 phospho-isoforms and VEGFR-1 in gastric cancer.METHODS This was a single-center observational study which enrolled 98 gastric cancer patients and 82 adjacent normal gastric tissues from patients aged 32-84 years(median age 65)between July 2006 and April 2007.Patients were followed up until death or the study ended(median follow-up duration of 28.5 mo).The samples were used to generate tissue microarrays(TMAs)for immunohistochemical(IHC)staining. The expressions of TGF-β1,pSMAD3C(S423/425),pSMAD3L(S204),and VEGFR-1 in gastric cancer(GC)tumor tissue and normal tissue were measured by IHC staining using TMAs obtained from 98 GC patients.Prognosis and survival information of the patients was recorded by Outdo Biotech from May 2007 to July 2015.The relationship between TGF-β1,pSMAD3C(S423/425),pSMAD3L(S204),and VEGFR-1 protein expression levels was analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient. The relationship between protein expression levels and clinicopathological parameters was analyzed using the Chi-squared test.A survival curve was generated using the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis.RESULTS TGFβ-1 and VEGFR-1 expression was significantly upregulated in gastric cancer tissue compared to adjacent noncancerous tissue. The positive expression of phosphorylated isoforms of Smad3 varied depending on the phosphorylation site[pSMAD3C(S423/425):51.0%and pSMAD3L(S204):31.6%].High expression of pSMAD-3L(S204)was significantly correlated with larger tumors(P=0.038)and later N stages(P=0.035).Additionally,high expression of VEGFR-1 was closely correlated with tumor size(P=0.015)and pathological grading(P=0.013).High expression of both pSMAD3L(S204)and VEGFR-1 was associated with unfavorable outcomes in terms of overall survival(OS).Multivariate analysis indicated that high expression of pSMAD3L(S204)and VEGFR-1 were independent risk factors for prognosis in GC patients.VEGFR-1 protein expression was correlated with TGF-β1(r=0.220,P=0.029),pSMAD3C(S423/425)(r=0.302,P=0.002),and pSMAD3L(S204)(r=0.201,P=0.047),respectively.Simultaneous overexpression of pSMAD3L(S204)and VEGFR-1 was associated with poor OS in gastric cancer patients.CONCLUSION Co-upregulation of pSMAD3L(S204)and VEGFR-1 can serve as a predictive marker for poor gastric cancer prognosis, and pSMAD3L(204)may be involved in enhanced gastric cancer metastasis in a VEGFR-1-dependent manner.
文摘Background: HIV/AIDS has a negative impact on child growth. Hence the need for health workers is to strengthen the prevention of mother and child transmission and the monitoring of the growth of HIV-infected children in order to improve the long-term prognosis.

文摘This letter addresses the review titled“Wharton’s jelly mesenchymal stem cells:Future regenerative medicine for clinical applications in mitigation of radiation injury”.The review highlights the regenerative potential of Wharton’s jelly mesenchymal stem cells(WJ-MSCs)and describes why WJ-MSCs will become one of the most probable stem cells for future regenerative medicine. The potential plausible role of WJ-MSCs for diabetic bone regeneration should be noticeable, which will provide a new strategy for improving bone regeneration under diabetic conditions.
文摘Neurodegenerative diseases are often misdiagnosed, especially when the diagnosis is based solely on clinical symptoms. The p75 neurotrophic receptor(p75^(NTR))has been studied as an index of sensory and motor nerve development and maturation. Its cleavable extracellular domain(ECD)is readily detectable in various biological fluids including plasma, serum and urine. There is evidence for increased p75NTR ECD levels in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,age-related dementia, schizophrenia, and diabetic neuropathy.Whether p75^(NTR) ECD could be used as a biomarker for diagnosis and/or prognosis in these disorders, and whether it could potentially lead to the development of targeted therapies, remains an open question. In this review,we present and discuss published studies that have evaluated the relevance of this emerging biomarker in the context of various neurodegenerative diseases. We also highlight areas that require further investigation to better understand the role of p75^(NTR) ECD in the clinical diagnosis and management of neurodegenerative disorders.
文摘The effects of four kinds of plant growth regulators with different concentrations on narcissi were studied in 2001. The ornament value of narcissi was obviously improved by using the regulators.
文摘Since the eruption of the recent global financial crisis, major countries have been pushing forward structural reforms with science and technology (S&T) innovation at the heart. To spur future economic growth, China should steadfastly follow its S&T innovation strategy, promote the utilization of S&T innovation results, boost its economic growth potentials and make the most of global innovation resources.
