A Review of Recent Advances in Research on Asian Monsoon in China

This paper reviews briefly advances in recent research on monsoon by Chinese scholars, including primarily： （1） the establishment of various monsoon indices. In particular, the standardized dynamic seasonal variability index of the monsoon can delimit the geographical distribution of global monsoon systems and determine quantitatively the date of abrupt change in circulation. （2） The provision of three driving forces for the generation of monsoon. （3） The revelation of the heating-pump action of the Tibetan Plateau, which strengthens southerlies in the southern and southeastern periphery of the Plateau and results in a strong rainfall center from the northern Bay of Bengal （BOB） to the Plateau itself. （4） Clarification of the initial onset of the Asian Summer Monsoon （ASM） in the BOB east of 90°E, Indochina Peninsula （ICP） and the South China Sea, of which the rapid northward progression of tropical convection in the Sumatra and the rapid westward movement of the South Asia High to the Indochina Peninsula are the earliest signs. （5） The provision of an integrated mechanism for the onset of the East Asian Summer Monsoon （EASM）, which emphasizes the integrated impact of sensible heat over Indian Peninsula, the warm advection of the Tibetan Plateau and the sensible heat and latent heat over the Indochina Peninsula on the one hand, and the seasonal phase-lock effect of the northward propagation of low frequency oscillation on the other. （6） The revelation of the ＂planetary-scale moisture transport large-value band＂ from the Southern Hemisphere through to the Asian monsoon region and into the North Pacific, which is converged by several large-scale moisture transport belts in the Asian-Australian monsoon regions and whose variation influences directly the temporal and spatial distribution of summer rainfall in China. （7） Presenting the features of the seasonal advance of the EASM, the propagation of intraseasonal oscillation, and their relationship with rainfall in China; indicating that the intraseasonal oscillation of the EASM propagates in the form of a wave-train along the coast and behaves as monsoon surge propagating northward. （8） Describing the interannual and interdecadal variation of Asian monsoon, revealing the factors affecting it, and possible mechanisms of the variation of Asian monsoon. An elementary outlook on the existing problems and future direction of monsoon research is also provided.

A Review of Botulism in China

The epidemiological characteristics and etiology of botulisin in China, as well as the distribution of different types of Clustridium bolulinum in China; are described.Through 1989, 15 provinces and autonomous regions reported the occurrence of botulism.There were 2861 cases involved in 745 outbreaks.Among the cases 421 died, with a case fatality of 14.7%.The main epidemiological characteristics of botulism in China are: (i) the major foods causing botulism are homemade fermented bean products which accounted for 62.6% of the cases; (ii) the incubation period is longer (3 h-54 days) than that described in the western literature (mostly 2-7 days); (iii) the peak occurrence is from February to May; (iv) the progression of symptoms and signs is slower than that of western cases.All types of C.bolulinum.with the exception of type G, have been found in China.The distribution of various types of C.botnlinum is significantly different between southern and northern China; this is related to the latitude and is correlated with the prevalence of this disease.Most of the botulism outbreaks occurred above 30° north latitude in northern China and outbreaks rarely occurred below 30° north latitude.Nationwide surveys showed that the average detection rate of C bolulinum spores in soil and foods in the northern parts of China was 14.8%.while it was only 2.5% in the south.C.bolulinum types A, B, E.and F, which are involved in human botulism, were frequently found in the North, while types C and D, which are involved only in animal intoxication, were found more frequently in the south. 1990 Academic Press.Inc.

Review and Progress of China’s Forest Continuous Inventory System

China was one of the earliest countries to set up a system to continuously inventory natural forest resources. From the beginning of the 1970s until today, seven forest resource inventories have been carried out. This research summarizes the progress of forest continuous inventories and analyzes the existing deficiencies ofChina’s forest continuous inventory system and forest management plan inventory. As stated above, this research offers corresponding countermeasures and suggestions: establishing a sample plot system for comprehensive national forest inventory and monitoring with each province’s continuous forest inventory based on the foundation of the national sample plot system, able to develop the province as a subset of the overall province-level forest resource inventory according to the actual conditions in each province. Through annual multi-resource/multi-benefit surveying of the forests, the monitoring of forest amounts, quality, functions and benefits will be assisted in its entirety. The further integration of the forest continuous inventory and the forest management plan inventory is also discussed. This research also proposes the varied probability sampling method with sub-compartments as the basic sampling unit (or combinations of sub-compartments). This will also satisfy the requirements of ecological inventory by region.
