Cross-cultural communication has become an essential course for international students.As foreign students have different cultural backgrounds and languages,pragmatic failures are inevitable for them when communicatin...Cross-cultural communication has become an essential course for international students.As foreign students have different cultural backgrounds and languages,pragmatic failures are inevitable for them when communicating in Chinese,thus resulting in unpleasant communication.In order to effectively reduce pragmatic failures,it is necessary to analyze the problems that arise in the process of teaching Chinese as a foreign language and determine the causes.This research is separated into three aspects.Firstly,with the support of the theory of pragmatics and by analyzing the life and learning of foreign students,it can be appreciated that the pragmatic failures of foreign students in using Chinese for communication are very much detailed in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language[1].Secondly,after arranging and analyzing these corpora,the reasons for the pragmatic failures of foreign students are determined.Finally,aiming at the causes of pragmatic failures,corresponding countermeasures and teaching suggestions are proposed.The conclusion drawn from this research is that pragmatic failures occur due to various factors,some of which are essential factors that cannot be changed.This requires effort from both Chinese language teachers and students in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language to lessen the occurrence of pragmatic failures.展开更多

Teaching and learning a language are influenced by an imagined community involving interaction among members in possible worlds.From an empirical standpoint,relatively little is known about how Chinese language lectur...Teaching and learning a language are influenced by an imagined community involving interaction among members in possible worlds.From an empirical standpoint,relatively little is known about how Chinese language lecturers see their possible memberships to the communities wherein students from different countries participate,or how this perception affects their teaching practice and innovative pedagogies.In order to address this gap,this study explores the teaching lives of four lecturers who teach Chinese as a second language(CSL)to foreign students in China.Drawing upon a three-year longitudinal study of interview data triangulated with journal entries and classroom observation,the findings reveal that lecturers’imagined identities may transform into practical identities due to the idea of treating foreign students as legitimate foreigners but illegitimate Chinese language users,and the intensified pressures and insecurities of being a part-time lecturer.However,the combined efforts of lecturers’perseverance,knowledge and competence,institutional support,available educational resources,and positive evolution of identity may prevent lecturers’imagined communities from collapsing,and possibly facilitate a shift in identification from“struggling teacher”to“determined teacher.”Relevant implications for teaching Chinese and teacher education are discussed.展开更多

Current TCFL pedagogies are influenced by Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL)...Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL) has become a prevalent phenomenon around the world in recent years. Current TCFL pedagogies are influenced by Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) so much that many traditional TESL/TEFL pedagogies such as the Grammar-Translation approach and the Audio-Lingual approach dominate current Chinese classes. This article provides an introduction and an initial validation of a newly developed pedagogy, Sheltered Initiation Language Learning (SILL), and its recent application in TCFL in San Diego, California. Compared with traditional ESL/EFL pedagogies which have been criticized for the neglect of the learner's communicative development, SILL is innovative for its emphasis on authentic and spontaneous speech, modified input as well as asymmetric teaching sequencing. With these factors, SILL is designed to promote students' oral language skills for communicating effectively in concrete situations. The initial validation of SILL suggests that despite several fallacies in classroom activity designs, SILL is a successful pedagogy welcomed by both teachers and students. Based on these discussions, the article proposes that SILL has the potential to be an effective pedagogy for Chinese Oral Language Teaching.展开更多
Using a thematic analysis methodology,this paper attempts a critical review of published articles on Chinese character teaching and learning in and outside China between 2005 and 2019,highlighting contributions schola...Using a thematic analysis methodology,this paper attempts a critical review of published articles on Chinese character teaching and learning in and outside China between 2005 and 2019,highlighting contributions scholars made to the current literature as well as identifying gaps in the research.The analysis reveals that there is a rather large gap in the use of research methodologies between the two sets of articles,with publications in China predominantly adopting non-empirical approaches while most articles published outside China are empirical.Besides,the use of computer-assisted language learning(CALL)in character teaching and learning seems to be a key research topic outside China,while exploring new pedagogical ideas and strategies attracts more interest among scholars in China.The paper concludes with suggestions for future research directions and a call for more diverse research paradigms and mixed-method perspectives.展开更多
In recent years,the enabling role of technology has been widely recognized in second language teaching and learning.Using a co-word analysis approach,this study aims to present the state-ofthe-art current literature i...In recent years,the enabling role of technology has been widely recognized in second language teaching and learning.Using a co-word analysis approach,this study aims to present the state-ofthe-art current literature in technology enhanced language learning.The analysis results show that most popular research themes from 2010 to 2020 are CMC,L2 writing,teacher education,L2 motivation,students’attitudes,SLA,L2 vocabulary learning,L2 reading,EFL,and L2 learners.Compared with these key themes,publications on technology enhanced teaching Chinese as a foreign language focus more on the investigation of the effectiveness of the use of latest technologies such as smart phones,virtual reality,intelligent tools,and gamification.Based on the findings of these investigations,the latest developments in these areas are synthesized and presented accordingly.In addition,newly-emerged key themes about the co-word analysis are also reported and their contributions to future investigations is briefly discussed.The implications for future research in technology enhanced teaching Chinese as a foreign language is also discussed.展开更多

文摘Vocabulary teaching is an integral part of teaching Chinese as a second language(TCSL).Based on a collection and analysis of words that foreign students at the junior level usually get wrong,①this paper suggests that TCSL teachers should make sure that new words in textbooks are explained accurately and foresee the words that students may misunderstand during vocabulary teaching.In addition to conceptual meanings,they should analyze and explain affiliated meanings,grammatical functions,and common collocations with other words through typical sentence examples.They should also pay attention to the potential role played by the semantic transparency of words in understanding,acquiring,and selecting the meanings of such words.The teaching of separable words should focus on their pragmatic forms.Simple conversations can be made to strengthen students’memorization,while quantifiers can be taught via their etymology to help students develop a reasonable understanding of the collocation rules between quantifiers and corresponding nouns.
文摘This action research which situates itself in the context of Digital Humanities focuses on engaging students of Introductory Chinese course with an assignment to create podcasts in the form of an interview.Requiring students to integrate the aural,oral,and textural information via technology so as to carry a conversation with an interlocutor challenges them to convey their thoughts from the language they think in into meaningful ideas using the target language.In this way,students are“pushed”to convert their listening,speaking,and writing from being isolated components into a more dynamic and cohesive mode of communicating.As they explore expressing their ideas in the language they are learning,they develop the skills and sensibility needed to critically analyze their own work.Although limited in scale,the podcast format urges students to transform what they need to learn into a familiar product.
文摘Teaching and learning a language are influenced by an imagined community involving interaction among members in possible worlds.From an empirical standpoint,relatively little is known about how Chinese language lecturers see their possible memberships to the communities wherein students from different countries participate,or how this perception affects their teaching practice and innovative pedagogies.In order to address this gap,this study explores the teaching lives of four lecturers who teach Chinese as a second language(CSL)to foreign students in China.Drawing upon a three-year longitudinal study of interview data triangulated with journal entries and classroom observation,the findings reveal that lecturers’imagined identities may transform into practical identities due to the idea of treating foreign students as legitimate foreigners but illegitimate Chinese language users,and the intensified pressures and insecurities of being a part-time lecturer.However,the combined efforts of lecturers’perseverance,knowledge and competence,institutional support,available educational resources,and positive evolution of identity may prevent lecturers’imagined communities from collapsing,and possibly facilitate a shift in identification from“struggling teacher”to“determined teacher.”Relevant implications for teaching Chinese and teacher education are discussed.
文摘Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL) has become a prevalent phenomenon around the world in recent years. Current TCFL pedagogies are influenced by Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) so much that many traditional TESL/TEFL pedagogies such as the Grammar-Translation approach and the Audio-Lingual approach dominate current Chinese classes. This article provides an introduction and an initial validation of a newly developed pedagogy, Sheltered Initiation Language Learning (SILL), and its recent application in TCFL in San Diego, California. Compared with traditional ESL/EFL pedagogies which have been criticized for the neglect of the learner's communicative development, SILL is innovative for its emphasis on authentic and spontaneous speech, modified input as well as asymmetric teaching sequencing. With these factors, SILL is designed to promote students' oral language skills for communicating effectively in concrete situations. The initial validation of SILL suggests that despite several fallacies in classroom activity designs, SILL is a successful pedagogy welcomed by both teachers and students. Based on these discussions, the article proposes that SILL has the potential to be an effective pedagogy for Chinese Oral Language Teaching.
文摘Using a thematic analysis methodology,this paper attempts a critical review of published articles on Chinese character teaching and learning in and outside China between 2005 and 2019,highlighting contributions scholars made to the current literature as well as identifying gaps in the research.The analysis reveals that there is a rather large gap in the use of research methodologies between the two sets of articles,with publications in China predominantly adopting non-empirical approaches while most articles published outside China are empirical.Besides,the use of computer-assisted language learning(CALL)in character teaching and learning seems to be a key research topic outside China,while exploring new pedagogical ideas and strategies attracts more interest among scholars in China.The paper concludes with suggestions for future research directions and a call for more diverse research paradigms and mixed-method perspectives.

文摘In recent years,the enabling role of technology has been widely recognized in second language teaching and learning.Using a co-word analysis approach,this study aims to present the state-ofthe-art current literature in technology enhanced language learning.The analysis results show that most popular research themes from 2010 to 2020 are CMC,L2 writing,teacher education,L2 motivation,students’attitudes,SLA,L2 vocabulary learning,L2 reading,EFL,and L2 learners.Compared with these key themes,publications on technology enhanced teaching Chinese as a foreign language focus more on the investigation of the effectiveness of the use of latest technologies such as smart phones,virtual reality,intelligent tools,and gamification.Based on the findings of these investigations,the latest developments in these areas are synthesized and presented accordingly.In addition,newly-emerged key themes about the co-word analysis are also reported and their contributions to future investigations is briefly discussed.The implications for future research in technology enhanced teaching Chinese as a foreign language is also discussed.
文摘Using intermediate and advanced Chinese students as the research subjects,HSK corpus and questionnaire surveys were used to explore the error types in the construction of"X什么(Y)+都+Z."The types of errors can be divided into component errors,relationship errors between components,and collocation errors between components and sentences.The main reasons for the errors are the particularity of the construction,the immature development of construction teaching,the negative transfer of students5 mother tongue,as well as the generalization and avoidance of the target language.
