Semantic predictability is one of the important factors that influence word processing and recognition.Based on the sPaM paradigm(Self-paced reading+Masked priming),the present study explores the influence of semantic predictability on TL effects in Chinese and English. The findings show that in both languages, internal and final transpositions produce priming effect in low-predictability preceding and following contexts as well as in high-predictability following contexts. From the perspective of priming magnitude, internal trans-position produces greater priming effect than final transposition in English, while in Chinese, final transposition produces greater priming effect than internal trans-position.In high-predictability preceding contexts, internal and final transpositions reveal significant priming effect and initial transposition produces close-to-significant-level priming effect in English, while in Chinese,no significant priming effect is observed in initial, internal or final transpositions. 展开更多

Idioms have attracted great attention over recent decades. Nevertheless, controversies still remain in regard of the most plausible cognition mechanism for idiom comprehension, especially concerning non-Indo-European languages and second/foreign language users. Event Related Potential (ERP) experiments on proficient English learners whose native language was Mandarin Chinese were conducted to test the influences of idioms' familiarity on both Chinese and English (as foreign language) idiom comprehension. Data including accuracy rates, reaction time, and latency and peak amplitudes of N400 were recorded and analyzed, indicating that familiarity might play a significant role in idiom comprehension in both native and foreign languages. Further, idioms, should they have similar familiarity levels, may be easier to process in the native language (Chinese) than in the foreign language (English). 展开更多

Idioms are essence of a language and a kind of special and fixed phrases or short sentences in the long period of language use.Because animals have been considered as people’s best friends for hundreds of years, people adopt different species of animals as metaphors to express all their emotions. However, due to the different national characteristics between English and Chinese, such as geographical conditions and tradition so in most cases easterners and westerners have different attitudes and understanding towards same animals,of course, some animal idioms have the same meaning. 展开更多

This paper focuses on the theme of nature and childhood as represented in and before modern Chinese literature1 and 19th century English literature.Compared with Chinese literature, childhood and nature awareness in English literature is not only produced later, but also interwoven with a more complicated political and historical background.A study of Chinese and English modern literature shows that China has historically favored spiritually over materialism, its agrarian roots only recently giving way to industrialization.England,on the other hand, has had to learn painful lessons from industrialization in order to recover its long-lost self.Though the notions of nature and childhood in modern Chinese and English literature have their roots in Chinese and Western classical philosophies, which can be traced back respectively to Taoism and Platonism,it has taken centuries for modern English literature to become keenly and fully aware of that and try to restore this primordial fact. 展开更多
