Inspired by one of the maxims in a Chinese classics entitled The Roots of Wisdom, the present paper borrows the typical culturally-loaded Chinese discourses of Gu-qin — "stringed lute" and "non-stringed lute"—to add to the literary translation terminology and to enrich some Chinese literary translation theories. On the basis of analyzing some related theories in linguistics, pragmatics, aesthetics and communication which show different perspectives relevant with the study of translation, the present paper offers a new angle to illustrate how the Chinese discourses of Gu-qin,rich in cultural implications, can best describe translation and bring new vigor and vitality into the diversity and further expansion of the field of translation research. 展开更多

Through reform and opening up,China has moved from the edge of the world arena to the center and this great historical change in its development has created new requirements for the innovation of Chinese discourse. The remarkable achievements of reform and opening up have not only maintained the vitality of Chinese discourse, but also built the inherent foundation for holding confidence in discourse. The key reason why the policy of reform and opening up has facilitated the historic construction of Chinese discourse is that it is a scientific answer to the questions of our times about how to build socialism in a country relatively backward in the level of economy and education. In a new era for the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics, the innovations and development of Chinese discourse have shown new features rarely seen before, among which the most significant is that constructing Chinese discourse is no longer a matter of individual cases but more of a common phenomenon. In the historic journey towards an all-round in-depth reform, broader theoretical space has been created for Chinese discourse. In addition,it is an important signpost in the path of promoting innovative development of Chinese discourse in a new era, namely, how to"tell China’s stories well",and establish an appropriate mode for conveying Chinese discourse to the world. 展开更多

In the process of establishing a Chinese discourse system for Middle East studies, the following fundamental factors should be taken into consideration. The guideline should be the mainstream of Chinese humanistic philosophy.Unlike the commanding and thrusting discourse systems of the US and some European countries, the Chinese discourse system highlights equality in communication It is likely to be more popular with the Islamic countries in the Middle East and therefore receive serious concern and should be cherished by the Chinese academicians of Middle East studies. We should pay attention to all the documents and materials from the research topic, attaching great importance to referencing documents and materials from abroad as well as the established terminology and translated terms of the Chinese Muslims, which are different from those in Protestant Christianity or Catholic Christianity. We should also follow the current spirit in the process of establishing a Chinese discourse system for Middle East studies. In the background of economic globalization, the themes of the times emphasize peace and development and the trend of democratization of international relations. In analyzing the contradiction between the US and the Islamic world,we should consider their interpretation of the present spirit and their disparities because it relates to their core values. The study of how to establish a discourse system for Middle East studies in China,a socialist country,is actually one part of the study of the essence of socialism with“Chinese characteristics.” 展开更多

There are two mistaken tendencies in the development of a Chinese literary discourse in academia. One is the "red dancing shoes" phenomenon, where scholars run helter- skelter after the latest developments in Western literary theory; the other is the "bound feet" phenomenon, where tradition-bound scholars believe that tradition must be kept unchanged and that Chinese literary theory should be cleansed of all alien elements. Neither approach is desirable. Contemporary Chinese literary theory should be grounded in present realities and should distinguish between substance and function. "Substance" has to consist of China's present literary creation and critical practice; only thus can we appropriate Western and traditional Chinese literary theories in the service of today's needs, and make the ancient serve the modern and the foreign the Chinese. This will enable us to develop a literary discourse that is both contemporary and Chinese. 展开更多

The contemporary construction of Chinese international law discourse, on the one hand, ought to precisely, systematically and completely express and communicate fundamental principles, main regimes and substantial features of international law as well as core values, basic conceptions, key terms, mainstream theories or doctrines and representative views gradually established and developed in the study of international law; on the other hand, it should fully and in a timely way manifest China's creative contributions to international law and its discipline and discourse. The framework of contemporary Chinese international law discourse should take "building a harmonious world" as the guiding rationale; thoroughly cover the four basic dimensions of the international rule of law and Chinese foreign policy and its practice, namely domestic, multilateral, regional and bilateral; coincide with, follow and respect those rules, natural laws and tendencies such as fundamental rules governing international relations, globalization, multilateralism, regional integration and regionalism, the international community's obligations (or rights) and China's needs for peaceful development. It should orient its basic functions toward promoting the continuous development and wide application of contemporary international law as well as its teaching, study and dissemination, stimulating the progress of the rule of law in China, protecting Chinese interests, especially those core national interests, and strengthening China's international image and status as a responsible big country. 展开更多

After assuming the Chinese presidency in March 2013, Xi Jinping introduced the new political slogan "the Chinese Dream," which he does not only address to the domestic audience but also aims to promote to the world. Since his inaugural trip abroad, Xi has repeatedly speeches when addressing international catchphrase received as much appeal as used the term "Chinese Dream" in his audiences. However, nowhere has the in Africa. Simultaneously, African academics and other interested parties have observed the promotion of the idea of an African Dream by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) with great suspicion as they view it simply as a projection of China's own foreign policy onto Africa. But what do the Chinese Dream and African Dream actually mean? How can we make sense out of these terms? In order to decode or demystify the meaning behind the Chinese Dream narrative in the context of China's foreign policy, this paper argues that it is essential to examine how it is constructed and projected to the international audience, in particular to Africa. The Chinese Dream is understood as a narrative which is strategically used by the CCP in order to shape perceptions and behavior of other international actors according to their own agenda. Moreover, the dynamic interactions between the media and politics and how they impinge on the formation and projection of the Chinese Dream and African Dream narrative will also be taken into account. 展开更多

This article will discuss how the official discourse on the Chinese Dream is transformed in the meeting with the public in China. The Chinese Dream will be discussed both as a political framing discourse and as a public communication campaign in order to understand how the very selective responsiveness to the central theme of the Chinese Dream, the great rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation, influences the impact of the Dream discourse. An analysis of a selection of posts from Sina Weibo demonstrates how the Dream discourse contributes to national identity building, or in Benedict Anderson's words (in Imagined communities: Reflections on the origin and spread of nationalism, 1991): to the imagined community that is China. 展开更多
