In the summer of 2023,Zhang Zhizhong’s Reading English Literature to Translate Classical Chinese Poems got published as one of the“Comparative Literature and World Literature Research Series”edited by Cao Shunqing. It presents Zhang’s latest theory and praxis of translating classical Chinese poems. As a kind of rewriting,Zhang’s translations are similar to modern English poems—with creative expressions in contemporary English, the enjambments from free verses, the form of concrete poetry, and the artistic conceptions of classical Chinese poetry, but without the rhymes in original works. How this poetry translation as rewriting generates in the constraints of ideology, poetics, and patronage is to be analyzed in the light of AndréLefevere’s rewriting theory.By examining the non-textual factors related to Zhang’s rewriting,it aims to reveal how this rewriting,as an experimental approach to poetry translation, can shed light on the global circulation of Chinese poetry. 展开更多

The "defamiliarization theory" has undergone a process of continuous improvement, with its focus shifting from the plain text to the world concerned. A similar process was experienced by scholars who apply the theory. In this paper, the author explores Gary Snyder's "defamiliarization" technique of translating classic Chinese poems Departing from the traditional critique of the form and structure of the text, the author applies the "defamiliarization theory" itself towards the understanding of Snyder's art and thinking and a discussion of his literature, ideology, and creativity, thereby restoring a true image of Gary Snyder as a poet and a translator 展开更多

This paper intends to study Ezra Pound's early poetics and his modemist poetry through a close research of the Eastern elements in the shaping process of his poetics and the significance and influence of his poetic thoughts on the American New Poetry Movement. In order to clarify the essence of Pound's early poetics under the influence of Chinese classical poems, the paper starts from the discussion of the influence of Cathay (1915) and his translation of Cathay; then it provides a detailed analysis of the relationship between Chinese classical poems and Pound's creation; and finally it has given an analysis of "In a Station of the Metro". Pound absorbed different poetic concepts from all of them and transformed his poetry from the conventional Romanticism to the innovative Modemism. What Pound innovated in the poetry composition is of great importance if the new era wishes to shake off the banality and out-of-date tradition in literature. Pound changed a whole generation of poets and set a good example for those who desire to write in a new way 展开更多

This paper focuses on the theme of nature and childhood as represented in and before modern Chinese literature1 and 19th century English literature.Compared with Chinese literature, childhood and nature awareness in English literature is not only produced later, but also interwoven with a more complicated political and historical background.A study of Chinese and English modern literature shows that China has historically favored spiritually over materialism, its agrarian roots only recently giving way to industrialization.England,on the other hand, has had to learn painful lessons from industrialization in order to recover its long-lost self.Though the notions of nature and childhood in modern Chinese and English literature have their roots in Chinese and Western classical philosophies, which can be traced back respectively to Taoism and Platonism,it has taken centuries for modern English literature to become keenly and fully aware of that and try to restore this primordial fact. 展开更多
