THE death in October of a 16-year-old Chinese gold miner in Ghana, along with the arrest of over 90 of his colleagues, has once again shone a spotlight on the plight of Chinese workers in Africa.

A total of 35 104 subjects were enrolled in this study. The age-adjusted prevalence of MS, BMI≥25, diabetes, hypertension, and abnormal lipid was 13.9%, 29.5%, 12.8%, 27.5%, and 47.1%, respectively. The prevalence of BMI≥25, hyperglycemia, and hypertension increased with the age of males and females, and was higher in males than in females (37.1% vs 21.5%, 15.9% vs 12.1%, 35.0% vs 24.3%, 54.3% vs 40.4%).展开更多

We detected the levels of 15 metals in urine samples from 500 representative sub-samples in an ongoing occupational cohort study (Jinchang Cohort) to directly evaluate metal exposure levels. Fifteen metals, namely As, Ba, Be, Cd, Cs, Cr, Co, Cu, Pb, Mn, Ni, Se, TI, U, and Zn, were detected by inductively coupled plasma quadruple mass spectrometry. The results showed that median creatinine adjustment and geometric mean urinary metal levels were higher in the heavy metal-exposed group, except Se and Zn, than other reported general or occupational populations. Further studies should address the effects of heavy metals on human health.展开更多

At the time when the country is dealing with impacts of the global financial crisis, the All-China Federation of Trade Unions has been working fruitfully and effectively to accelerate economic and social development and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of workers, therefore making contributions to the protection of the rights and interests of Chinese workers. The past gravimetric dust concentration values, obtained from different worksites, were converted into fiber concentration values according to conversion factors that were worked out by simultaneous sampling in this study. The conversions were made so that exposure could be expressed in fiber-years (f-yr). Asbestosis was diagnosed on the basis of chest radiographs and occupational histories. Cumulative dust exposure (f-yr) was calculated up to the date of diagnosis for asbestosis patients, and up to September 1982 for the remaining workers. A dose-response relationship expressed as fiber-years exposed vs cumulative prevalence of asbestosis was established by the life table method on the basis of these data. Predicted 3 and 1% prevalence of asbestosis corresponded to 43 and 22 f-yr exposure, respectively. Considering that a worker can work for 35 years, these doses are commensurate with dust concentrations of 1.22 and 0.63 f/ml, respectively. It is recommended that 1 f/ml be taken as the maximum allowable concentration of airborne asbestos dust for the workplace with an anticipated prevalence of about 2% asbestosis after 35 years of exposure. 1990 Academic Press, Inc.展开更多

The federation estimated there are 210 million migrant workers nationwide with the country's rural population of 900 million. The total number of trade union members increased from 123 million in 2003 to 209 million by the end of June 2008, said the federation.展开更多

Still, there are a number of problems existed in this cinematic "new wave." This paper analyzes a recent example of this tide, The Road (Fangxiang zhi lii, 2006), and its implications. A careful examination of the film's narrative strategy reveals that it is oftentimes entrenched in the bourgeois ideology of "human nature," which circumscribes its intended agenda of making a genuine reflection on the past and present of Chinese workers. On the surface, this film offers a positive image of the Maoist period by presenting a vivacious revolutionary work ethic in the female protagonist and her master. However, on a deeper level, the film only gives an impression of pity for this wretched workwoman who has completely wasted her life. Her "human nature" has been distorted by her socialist work ethic that had been inscribed with imprints of Maoism. In the mean time, the movie's repetition of political clich6s against revolutionary discourse, and an artificial binarity between socialism and commercial culture, bring out the real effect that rather than departing from stereotypes, it in effect merely perpetuates the popular narrative that has come to stigmatize the Maoist era. By this strategy, the film also evades the responsibility of accounting for the real reason for the gigantic social-political transformation.展开更多
