Since shear waves (S-waves) are the same in a saturated soil foundation and a single-phase medium foundation, a tangential visco-elastic boundary condition for a single-phase medium foundation can also be used for saturated soil foundations. Thus, the purpose of the artificial boundary proposed in this paper is primarily to absorb two types of P-waves in a saturated soil foundation. The main idea is that the stress of the P-waves in the saturated soil foundation is decomposed into two types. The first type of stress, δra' is absorbed by the first artificial boundary. The second type of stress, δrb, is balanced by the stress generated by the second artificial boundary. Ultimately, both types of P-waves (fast-P-waves and slow-P-waves) are absorbed by the artificial boundary model proposed in this paper. In particular, note that the fast-P-waves and slow-P-waves are absorbed at the position of the first boundary. Thus, the artificial boundary model proposed herein can simultaneously absorb P-fast waves, P-slow waves and shear waves. Finally, a numerical example is given to examine the proposed artificial boundary model, and the results show that it is very accurate.展开更多

Timoshenko's beam model and nonlocal elasticity theory are employed for formulation of the problem. The equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principals by calculating kinetic energy, strain energy and work due to viscoelastic foundation. The effects of various parameters such as wavenumber, non-homogeneous index, nonlocal parameter and three parameters of foundation are performed on the phase velocity of the nanobeam. The obtained results indicate that some parameters such as non-homogeneous index, nonlocal parameter and wavenumber have significant effect on the response of the system.展开更多

Quasi-Green's function is established by the fundamental solution and the boundary equation of the problem. The function satisfies the homogeneous boundary condition of tile problem. The mode-shape differential equation of the free vibration problem of clamped thin plates on the Winkler foundation is reduced to the Fredholm integral equation of the second kind by Green's formula. The irregularity of the kernel of the integral equation is overcome by choosing a suitable form of the normalized boundary equation. The numerical results show the high accuracy of the proposed method.展开更多

A survey was developed to understand the challenges of the newly graduated midwives and to identify resource and educational needs. The survey feedback will help develop and strengthen curriculum for primary and postgraduate midwifery training. Methods: A 30-question survey was given to midwives at the Hope Hospital in Cox’s Bazar and at the birth centers in the surrounding rural communities. Questions explored the midwives’ clinical experience, patient problems in the prenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal period, and asked about what education;training and clinical resources were needed. Results: Thirty-two midwives answered the surveys. The midwives’ average time from graduation from the midwifery diploma program was sixteen months. All the respondents felt comfortable managing most maternal issues but felt further training was important. They also identified the lack of many clinical resources including blood products, medicines, vaccines, and ultrasound. They identified significant maternal health issues among their patients including adolescent pregnancy, malnutrition, anemia, sexual violence, pregnancy-induced hypertension, hemorrhage, low birth weight infants, prolonged and obstructed labors. Conclusion: Training and increasing the number of midwives are crucial strategies for reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. There is a significant need for long-term placement and commitment of midwives to rural areas in Bangladesh. Health systems and organizations employing midwives must be accountable for the continuing education, mentorship, and supportive needs of midwives.展开更多

Different types of connections, such as dampers, including the ones suggested by the authors, are studied. Seismic impact is given as a harmonic function and various existing accelerograms, including synthesized ones. Distinctive feature of this paper from previously published ones [1] [2] is the fact that the emphasis falls on the influence of soil-foundation interaction properties, which are described using various models of load-displacement connections. Calculation results are compared in the case of representation of the building as concentrated masses and spatial systems. Ways to reduce seismic response of buildings during the earthquakes are pointed out. Results of experimental studies are given in the paper and are compared with calculations.展开更多

Supposing that the vertical deformation of the soil elements surrounding pile varies in the form of exponent function with radial distance, and considering the nonlinear constitutive relation of stress and strain, the stiffness matrix is established. The mechanics behavior of the pile—soil interface is simulated with a nonlinear interface element. This method can truly express the behavior of the pile-soil system. The load-settlement relation Q-S curves of two big diameter prototype piles on bearing test are analyzed, and satisfying results are obtained. The analysis has taken into account their stiffness EI, Winkler’s space with modulus of subgrade reaction k and equality deformities of the foundation beam with the ground. The solution is found by using the numerical analysis of the Winkler’s model, with variation of different moduli of the subgrade reaction k2 outside the force zone r, while under the force P exists the modulus of the subgrade reaction k, up to the definition of minimum bending moments. The exponential function k2(r), as the geometric position of the minimum moments is approximately assumed. From the potential energy conditions of the reciprocity of displacement and reaction, the width of the zone r and the modulus of the subgrade reaction k2 are explicitly determined, introducing in the calculation initial and calculation soil displacement wsi successively. At the end of the paper, it presented numerical example in which the influence of k and k2 values on bending moments of the counter beam is analyzed. The essential idea of this paper is to decrease the quantity of the reinforcement in the foundations, beams, i.e. to obtain a cost-efficient foundation construction.展开更多

But physics has no unified basic theory in the modern sense. Classical mechanics, relativity and quantum mechanics have their own basic concepts, categories and principles, so none of them can be regarded as true basic theories of physics. Cosmic Continuum Theory holds that the continuity and discreteness of the universe are fundamental issues related to the unification of physics. Because the contradiction between quantum non-locality and local reality is the fundamental obstacle to the unification of physics, while locality and non-locality correspond to the continuity and discreteness of physical reality respectively. The cosmic continuum theory introduces mathematical continuum and axiomatic ideas to reconstruct the basic theory of physics, and by the correspondence of existence and its dimensions to achieve the unification of the essence of physical reality, by introducing the cosmic continuum hypothesis to achieve the unification of the continuity and discreteness of physical reality, by introducing axiomatic methods to achieve formal unification of the foundations on physics. From the perspective of Cosmic Continuum, classical mechanics, relativity and quantum mechanics are no longer the basic theories of physics, but three branch theories of physics that are respectively applicable to macroscopic, cosmoscopic and microcosmic systems.展开更多
