Empathy and Cognitive Schema:The Ways of Chinese Culture Going Global Reconsidered

In spite of its acknowledged achievements and contributions in recent years,it is still necessary to review the diplomacy of Chinese culture going global.Approached from the perspective of cognition and affection,the main reason leading to the low efficiency of Chinese official cross-cultural communication is that the collectivism implied in the governmental institutes is in conflict with the individualism schema in Western mainstream discourse,making it difficult to invoke empathy from Western audience.By contrast,some popular culture spread through the Internet is empathy-provoking only because it contains two schemata of nostalgia and individualism that have been embedded in many Western netizens’cognition.In other words,popular culture has little communicating power to transmit the essence of Chinese culture.Given the limitations of these two ways,China should at least make adjustments on four aspects to improve the effect of its culture going out:(1)integrate more mutually shared schemata into the selected Chinese culture;(2)modernize the cultural contents and transmission methods;(3)reduce the role of the government and insist on diversifying and individualizing communication subjects;(4)encourage the creation of fine culture.

Translations of Chrysanthemum Poems in Dreams of Red Mansion from the Perspective of Roger T·Bell’s Cognitive Schema—based on Yang’s and Hawkes’s editions

The transability of poems has been a heated debate.Actually,there is no problem in transforming one language to anoth⁃er.However,the successful transformation rests with that the translation can get the identical aesthetics effect of source texts.It is no doubt that translation process plays a vital role.This paper will analyze and study the translations of chrysanthemum poems in Dreams of Red Mansion from the perspective of Roger T·Bell’s cognitive schema,based on two editions,the translation of Yang Xianyi and Yang Gladys and the translation of David Hawkes.The analysis gives rises a conclusion that the poetic beauty(the liter⁃ary grace containing in poems),disposition(the personality hiding behind poems)and omen(the destiny implying in poems)can be interactively processed in syntactic,semantic and pragmatic levels if the content and meaning of source text and target text can be transmitted equally.

Reflections on the Research Status Quo of CDA in China

Since its birth in Britain in the late 1970s, critical discourse analysis （CDA, for short） has attracted great attention of western linguists. At present, some scholars in our country have devoted themselves to the study of CDA and the study results are rewarding. However, some insufficiencies do exist in the research, such as the over-simplification of theories, excessive attention paid to theories rather than practice and neglect of nurturing critical thinking etc. Therefore, the author proposes to associate CDA with cognitive linguistics and interpret the research methods and the practical values of CDA in a wholly new perspective in terms of the analysis of the cohesion of the cognitive schema, ideology and notions from the information receivers and senders.

Perspectives for Teaching Reading in a College English Classroom

English, has not only become the international language as it is spoken by a large number of native speakers of other languages and serves as a language of wider communication but also achieved a genuinely global status owing to its special role recognized in every country. Under such circumstances, greater importance has been attached to English teaching of which reading has been given some privileges at the tertiary level in China. Hence, it is very essential for language teachers to have a good understanding about how to teach reading in a college English classroom. This article discusses what reading is, the important issues in teaching reading, and gives some proposals for how to teach reading efficiently in a college English classroom, aiming to give an idea that reading can be learnt effectively if students are motivated, exposed to English language and given chances to use English.
