We find that the transition from the traditional to the nuclear family did not involve industrialization in the traditional Western sense. As an early state industrialization strategy after 1949, rural collectivization fundamentally changed the organizational pattern of traditional family production and daily life and of inter-generational relations and structures under the patriarchal system, launching the historical process of structural transition in the family. It argues that there were various strong ties between rural society and urban society in traditional China. However, the programs of Land Reform and Collectivization cut off these ties and made it impossible for Chinese people to be "amphibious" as they were previously. This fundamental change reshaped China's rural-urban relations, making rural society and urban society two separate spheres. The new rural-urban relations lasted all the way down to the present without being overhauled.展开更多

The work stems from a critical reflection on the premises of the capitalist market system. From Adam Smith to J. M. Keynes (included), economists have identified in traditional capitalist models (search for maximum profit, economic efficiency, free competition system) the best economic system, universally implementable, feasible and infallible in democratic capitalist contexts. In the history of economic ideas have always been clear gap between the "capitalist system" and the "collectivist system". The choice of a government had to fall back on one or on the other system. The first considered "good", the second considered "bad" for economic growth. Times since September 11, 2001, however, seem to have debunked the myth of capitalism as the only model of democratic growth: Asia and China have given the world a lesson in humility. China has shown that although not being a democratic country could developed a robust and highly competitive economic model that has weakened the pillars of the western capitalism. China through Confucianism and Taoism has been able to establish the new global economic laws: low labour costs, low prices, mass production of low quality with a mixed mercantilist philosophy which is unknown to the Western world: the silent, smooth, radical trade expansion. As in a game of dominoes, China has been able to drop the capitalism safeties and America had to bow its head and agree to no longer be the only great power in the international scenario. But the peculiarity of this work is not only to define the root causes of China's success in the West; also reflects the fact that an Italian economist (Enrico Barone), in 1908, predicted analytically and developed a theoretical system very similar to that of China nowadays, between capitalism and collectivism (a third way of the market). The Asian culture has developed a market system that has proven to be accommodating to the needs of the capitalist market and to grasp the development opportunities that the same Western capitalism has offered.展开更多

Scholars have not been able to agree on a definition of culture but most include values and norms as components of their definition. Intercultural communication is vital that skill managers must possess in order to effectively do business in foreign countries. Hofstede's theory of national cultural dimensions is employed to provide a framework for defining intercultural communication. Subsequently, several countries are examined using Hofstede's scoring system for cultural dimensions. This is followed by a discussion of ways to achieve intercultural competence.展开更多

While divorce has long been culturally discouraged and limited, divorce has been rapidly increasing after the renovation policy in late 1980s with alternative causes, consequences, etc Modernization is a process of transforming "traditional" society to "modern" one, in order to achieve economic development and growth, to innovate politics and to enhance their social structure towards a political, social, and economic system similar to those of western developed countries. In the field of marriage, family, and kinship, modernization process experiences the maintenance of traditional values and the appearance of the new modern values. This paper aims to examine trend and correlates of divorce and to identify social and cultural factors influencing the divorce decision, using data of divorce profiles of one district court in 10 years (i.e., 2000-2009) with total divorce profiles analyzed are 2,033 cases, of which 499 divorce couples in a rural district and 1,534 divorced couples in an urban area.展开更多

The author attempts to assess the attitude to credit risk in the Polish banking system, in terms of cultural factors influencing the approach to this issue. The purpose of this paper is focused on testing the hypothesis that foreign owners of banks (headquarters) transfer elements of their national culture to its subsidiaries operating in Poland. It is done by analysis of statistical correlations between the indexes defining the main characteristics of national cultures and the actual financial performance indicators reached by selected banks in the period from 2004 to 2010 in Poland. The study objectives are the following: Firstly, whether the owners from different countries transfer their cultural attitude to risk to subordinate daughter-banks in Poland. The second question concerns the relevance of uncertainty avoidance and individualism/collectivism concepts of two, to some extent, competing approaches. The findings say that the regularity of the transfer of the cultural attitude to credit risk from the parent banks to their subsidiaries is confirmed by interviews with senior managers, but it is only partially reflected in the statistics. Main outcomes of the study propose that the cultural factors of bank risk management policy shouldn't be ignored and developed in other cross-cultural research areas, e.g. ethnocentrism. Generally, these studies are present lessons for companies, investors, and policymakers, but the usefulness of these implications varies.展开更多
