The latest College English Curriculum issued by MOE (Ministry of Education) does not reflect the trend of developing College English Teaching by focusing on ESP, but rather on improving general English course books. However, the first local College English Curriculum published in 2012 in Shanghai focuses on developing ESP and English for academic purpose as its teaching objectives. This paper analyzes different definitions of ESP in China's education setting, compares different views on handling the relationship between EGP and ESP in China's College English Reform, and explores how to apply an appropriate notion of EGP to College English teaching in China.展开更多

The case study in this paper illustrates that MET does benefit college English teaching but there are many problems of its application. Pedagogical implications are then provided to enhance the effective integration of MET and language teaching and learning: (1) it is wise for the teachers and learners to reconcile what is desirable with what is acceptable and possible in MET application; (2) teachers should optimize other existing resources to solve the problems caused by inequality and unavailability of MET; (3) teachers should have a clear conception of the relationship of MET and pedagogy to design and apply courseware appropriately; (4) students have beliefs in the benefits of MET, resulting in enhancing their individual language learning and efficiency.展开更多

It first discusses different models of English in the context of globalization. With detailed analysis of their theoretical backgrounds, development and foundations, this paper classifies these models into three groups: dualism (i.e., dualic model), trinalism (trinalic model) and monism (monic model). Through comparison, Yoneoka’s English Umbrella Theory is found to be more comprehensive and is improved into a practical Revised English Umbrella (REU) with the notion of English as an International Language (EIL). Second, the changing models in English education are briefly reviewed. Attention is paid to the Computer and Classroom-Based (CCB) Model of College English education because of new requirements for College English education. Students’ competence in cross-cultural communication is becoming more and more important in the EIL context. Finally, a modified CCB model is promoted with the REU, combining EIL and English Umbrella elements.展开更多
