In recent years, the"mania for school district houses"has disrupted the housing market and undermined education equity and class mobility, thus becoming a common concern. Most existing research focus on market motivations for purchasing school district houses while neglecting the connections between school district houses and cultural and social elements in the process of class reproduction. To make up for this deficiency this article introduces the neighborhood-based cultural capital theory to explore the diversified motivations, the processes of motivation formation, and the determining factors in purchasing school district houses.Reviews and analysis of interview materials revealed that while theories based on western experience can explain the basic purchasing motivations and their formation processes, there are distinct and varied purchasing motivations in China, more comprehensive and complex forms of capital exchange, and more dynamic factors that impact purchases of school district houses.Suggestions on solving the"mania for school district houses"are also presented. 展开更多

The author examines the differentiation of self-identity, school treatment, and academic struggle between two Asian American students in U.S. Midwest urban school environments. Using an interview study, the author focuses on understanding the students' perspectives in relation to the label of model minority. The purpose of the study is to investigate how social, academic, and economic factors affect these students, including different outcomes in terms of school achievement and self-identity formation. The findings aim to help urban educators approach complex factors regarding minority students' educational opportunities. Comprehensive results identified that: (1) The concept of model minority significantly affects Asian American students at all levels of daily life; (2) Urban schools continue reinforcing social reproduction and producing perceptions based on socioeconomic background and intersectional discrimination; (3) The evidence in the study shows that school environments do not aid students in valuing their cultural capital; (4) Students from different social classes present different linguistic and behavioral patterns; and (5) Social stratification significantly influences students' perspectives in response to the Asian stereotype, self-identity, and racial hierarchy in school and society. 展开更多

China's robust economy is bringing unprecedented growth and prosperity to the country. However, there is ample evidence to suggest that weaknesses in the banking system and the slow progress in reforming those weaknesses may cause disruption to continued economic growth. Bad loan portfolios as well as inadequate capital ratios point to the lack of proper governance and credit cultures at many banks. Unless these issues are quickly and properly addressed, the economic engine that drives the country will be at risk. 展开更多

This study examines the influence of family background on the willingness of students in urban and rural China to pursue higher education.Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research explores the interplay between economic, cultural, and social capital within the family context and its impact on students’educational aspirations.Descriptive statistics highlight the disparities in family income and educational attainment between urban and rural respondents.Regression analysis confirms the predictive role of family economic status and parental education on students’intentions to pursue higher education.Qualitative findings underscore the significance of social capital, particularly in rural areas where community support is crucial. The study also reveals urban-rural differences in educational aspirations, with urban students facing fewer barriers to higher education. The research concludes with policy implications that aim to address these disparities and enhance educational equity. 展开更多

Cultural capital plays an important role in individuals' educational and status attainment. On the basis of data from the Shanghai Social Structure Survey of 2008 and from the perspective of broadly defined cultural capital, this paper measures the role of cultural capital of parents and children in the acquisition of social status. The findings are as follows: (1) Higher stocks of cultural capital on the part of parents and children mean more years of schooling for children. (2) Children's culatral capital has a significant influence on their status attainment. (3) Controlling for variables like gender and father's occupation, the more cultural capital one has, the more likely one is to enter a higher stratum. (4) A family's education, cultural ambience and cultural investment have a sustained and stable impact on status attainment. (5) Cultural caoital provides an effective way for the lower strata ofsociety to achieve upward social mobility. 展开更多

The grassroots can become an online influencer with the help of social media.Similarly,an online influencer mode is applicable in the architecture field. This study introduces the term"influential online architecture"(IOA)and aims to understand the cause and promotion of the IOA phenomenon and its impact on architecture. This research also introduces Bour-dieu’s four forms of capital, namely, economic, cultural, social, and symbolic capitals,as a framework to argue that IOA is promoted by capitals through visual spectacles, class divisions, national identity, and social recognition. The methodology of this research uses case studies and logical argumentation through presentation and analysis of photos, statistical data, and comments from journals, books, news, and social platforms. The current study concludes that the online influencer mode in architecture should be concerned because the overemphasis on capitals through the production of IOA may erode the design field. This research argues that a well-established architecture criticism and post-occupancy evaluation system and a rational online influencer mode would contribute to the development of the design domain. 展开更多

Despite the expansion of Chinese education and the steady rise in the educational level of urban and rural residents since reform and opening up, the problem of educational inequality has persisted. This study employs CGSS2008 data to test the effects of household registration, family socio-economic status, years of parental education, and sibship size on educational opportunity at the three stages of junior middle school, senior middle school and higher education, as well as the changes in these effects over the period 1978-2008. The results show that there is no observable rural-urban disparity in opportunities for continuation to the junior middle school stage, but there is rising inequality in opporUmities for continuation to senior middle school and higher education; the influence of father's occupational status on children's educational opportunities remains largely the same, indicating that the stratification of educational attainment has not changed markedly since 1978: years of varental education play a marked and increasing role in children's educational attainment; and educational inequality due to sibship size also displays a rising tendency. To understand the structure and evolution of inequality in Chinese education since reform and opening up, it is necessary to study the micro-level mechanisms affecting residents' educational decision-making. 展开更多

Increasingly, cities have turned to mega-events as part of strategies to secure much desired global recognition and attract future economic investment. These events have a broad range of physical effects on the city and can also introduce new concepts of the city. For historic cities,mega-events can potentially have a profound influence on the city’s urban heritage, both physically and how heritage comes to be understood and defined.Recent changing trends in mega-events could come to see them more closely integrated into the existing city fabric, making the potential impact of mega-events on built heritage more pronounced. One long-standing event embedded within the city fabric that serves as a noteworthy example is the European Capital of Culture(ECoC),operating for 30 years and travelling between more than 50 cities. The paper presents the European Capital of Cultures of Genoa 2004,Liverpool 2008 and Istanbul 2010 as three diverse cases with differing themes and roles for heritage in order to review the potential synergy or friction between events and heritage and calls for heritage actors to become more involved in these processes. 展开更多
