The field relationship of literature in the Yan’an period is the first thing worthy of attention.In order to become an independent literary history,the literature of Yan’an period must be able to be distinguished from“Sui literary literature”and“new Chinese literature”.The complex field relationship in the Yan’an period makes the“cultural strategy”an indispensable perspective for studying literature in this period.

Teaching Cultural Strategies for Undergraduate Chinese-English Translation in Chinese Context

Although in China, ordinary translation theories favor the foreignizing strategy in translating culture, and outside China, there are opposing strategies between the cultural studies school and deconstructionist school, translation teachers should be fully aware of their respective revelations and limitations to translation teaching. This paper holds that in undergraduate C-E （Chinese-English~ translation teaching, the linguistic strategy is assimilation rather than alienation, thus, idiomaticness and preciseness should be emphasized. In teaching cultural translation strategy, first, we should promote students＇ cultural competence, which includes culture perceptive competence, culture comparison competence, culture evaluation competence, and culture mediation competence. Second, we need differentiate cultural strategies to translate literary and practical materials. In translating practical materials, functionality determines adaptation or exoticization; in translating literary materials, when cultural factor is the topic of writing, exoticization is employed for the main except that part of politeness system in institutional culture, abstract concrete conversion and description affection model in spiritual culture are adapted. When cultural factor is the background of writing, it is the target text aestheticality and readership intertextuality that determine adaptation or exoticization.

Strategies for culturing active/dormant marine microbes

Microorganisms are ubiquitous in the ocean environment and they play key roles in marine ecosystem function and service.However,many of their functions and phenotypes remain unknown because indigenous marine bacteria are mostly difficult to culture.Although many novel techniques have brought previously uncultured microbes into laboratory culture,there are still many most-wanted or key players that need to be cultured from marine environments.This review discusses possible reasons for‘unculturable microbes’and categorizes uncultured bacteria into three groups:dominant active bacteria,rare active bacteria,and dormant bacteria.This review also summarizes advances in cultivation techniques for culturing each group of unculturable bacteria.Simulating the natural environment is an effective strategy for isolating dominant active bacteria,whereas culturomics and enrichment culture methods are proposed for isolating rare active bacteria.For dormant bacteria,resuscitation culture is an appropriate strategy.Furthermore,the review provides a list of the most-wanted bacteria and proposes potential strategies for culturing these bacteria in marine environments.The review provides new insight into the development of strategies for the cultivation of specific groups of uncultured bacteria and therefore paves the way for the detection of novel microbes and their functions in marine ecosystems.

On Translation of Cultural Images in Chang Hen Ge from the Perspective of Reception Theory

Based on concepts of horizon of expectation and indeterminacy in reception theory,this paper reports a comparative analysis of Chang Hen Ge,a narrative poem written by Chinese poet Bai Juyi in the Tang Dynasty,and its English translations by William John Bainbrigge Fletcher,Herbert Allen Giles,Xu Yuanchong as well as Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang.Results are as follows:1)Xu’s translation is the best in that he adds annotations and combines literal and free translations so as to explicate cultural connotations and underlying implications of images while meeting and broadening target readers’horizon of expectation.In addition,he tries to replicate figurative characteristics and transform rhetorical techniques of original cultural images to retain the source text’s indeterminacy and aesthetic value and to provide target readers with intense aesthetic experience.2)There are inappropriate and inaccurate translations of cultural images in all the four English translations,and they are caused by differences in ethnic history,religious belief,mode of thinking,features of English and Chinese as well as the subjectivity of translators.
