Sheet-bulk metal forming(SBMF)is a promising process for manufacturing complex sheet components with functional elements. In this study, the entire forming process for a typical thin-walled component with external gearing is investigated, including sheet forming and bulk forming processes.Deep drawn cups are prepared during sheet forming;subsequently, upsetting is performed on the sidewall to form external gearing. The upsetting method performed is known as upsetting with a controllable deformation zone(U-CDZ).Compared with the conventional upsetting method,a floating counter punch with a counter force is used in the U-CDZ method such that the forming mechanism is changed into the accumulation of the deformation zone instead of deformation throughout the entire sidewall. The effects of the counter force and material flow are investigated to understand the mechanism. The forming quality,i.e.,the formfilling and effective strain distribution, improved, whereas a high forming load is avoided. In addition,a punch with a lock bead is used to prevent folding at the inner corner during the experiment. 展开更多

In three and six-axis free-bending equipment, the deformation zone length(A)is a fixed mechanical structure parameter modified when the relevant structure is redesigned and manufactured. In this study,a six degree of freedom(6-DOF)parallel mechanism was used as the control mechanism of the bending die,and a new method of changing the deformation zone length(A)was proposed.Firstly,an idealized geometric model of free bending-based active motion was established. Then, the influence of the deformation zone length(A)on the bending moment and the bending radius of the tube was analyzed. In addition, the finite element simulation and a kinematic model of free bending-based active motion controlled by the 6-DOF parallel mechanism were established, and bending processes of the SS304 tube with different deformation zone lengths were investigated.Afterwards, the impact of the deformation zone length(A)on the bending radius, bending moment, wall thickness, and motion of the parallel mechanism were analyzed. Finally, experiments were carried out on the free-bending equipment based on the 6-DOF parallel mechanism.Experiments verified the rules in the theoretical analysis, finite element simulation, and kinematic simulation. 展开更多

From the mechanistic point of view, magnesium alloys are lightweight materials and are receiving increasing attention in the past several years in various fields.Prof.Liang Zhen from Harbin Institute of Technology,China and the United State military are showing keen interest in the development of magnesium alloys as ballistic resistant material. However, their use is still limited owing to low ductility, low formability, and average mechanical properties. The magnesium alloys components must withstand the shockwave under hypervelocity ballistic impact. The ballistic testing can produce gradient variations of the strain and stress-energy away from the crater, and useful for the development of these alloys in the military and aerospace industry. Therefore, the present review article shed light on the post deformation analysis of the Mg alloys subjected to the different projectiles under ballistic impact, and the underlying mechanisms were discussed. In the end, some important issues regarding the ballistic impact and further studies in this field were proposed. 展开更多

We have collected GPS data in the period of 1999-2007 from the Crustal Motion Observation Network of China along the Zhangjiakou-Bohai fault and its adjacent regions to study the characteristics of present-day crustal horizontal motion velocities in the research zone.Strain rate components are computed in the spheric coordinate system by the least square collocation method.According to the spatial distribution of the principal strain rate, dilation rate and maximum shear strain rate derived from GPS measurements, this paper analyses the deformation of the subordinary faults of the Zhangjiakou-Bohai fault. The principal compression strain rates are apparently greater than the principal extension strain rates. The larger shear strain rate is mainly in and around the Xianghe,Wenan and Tangshan areas in Hebei Province.According to the profiles across different segments of the Zhangjiakou-Bohai fault, the three segments glong the Zhangjiakou-Bohai fault show an obviously left-lateal strike-slip and compression characteristics.By analysis of the motion characteristics of the blocks,e.g.the Yanshan block,North China Plain block,Ordos block, and Ludong-Huanghai block in and around the North China region, this paper speculates that the dynamics of the motion styles of Zhangjiakou-Bohai fault may directly come from the relative movement between the Yanshan block and the North China plain block, and the ultimate dynamics may be the results of the collison between Indian plate and Eurasian plate, and the persistent northeastward extrusion of the Indian plate. 展开更多

Hardness of materials depends significantly on the indentation size and grain/sub-grain size via microindentation and nanoindentation tests of high-purity tungsten with different structures. The grain boundary effect and indentation size effect were explored. The indentation hardness was fitted using the Nix-Gao model by considering the scaling factor. The results show that the scaling factor is barely correlated with the grain/sub-grain size. The interaction between the plastically deformed zone(PDZ) boundary and the grain/sub-grain boundary is believed to be the reason that leads to an increase of the measured hardness at the specific depths. Results also indicate that the area of the PDZ is barely correlated with the grain/sub-grain size, and the indentation hardness starts to stabilize once the PDZ expands to the dimension of an individual grain/sub-grain. 展开更多

The research into the hydrostatic pressure in the crust has been previously conducted from the viewpoint that the hydrostatic pressure is equal to the gravity, based on the fact that the hydrostatic pressure is derived mainly from the gravity of its overlying rocks. In this paper, the stress state of any point in the crust is suggested to have been caused by both the gravity and the tectonic force. The author proposes that the hydrostatic pressure is a combination or superposition of two isotropic stresses in the tectonic force and gravity stress fields. The results obtained with a finite element simulation indicate that the additional hydrostatic pressure borne by rocks decreases gradually from the compression zone ( p s c), the shear zone ( p s sh ) to the tensile zone ( p s t), and that the difference in the additional tectonic hydrostatic pressure between these deformed zones tends to increase, following the increase in the absolute value and/or the difference in external forces between different directions. This paper presents the foundation for the research into the tectonic physicochemistry. 展开更多

Unstable thermocapillary convection is a typical phenomenon during the process under microgravity. Therefore, it is very important to investigate the instability of thermocapillary convection in liquid bridges with deformable free-surface under microgravity. In this works, the Volume of Fluid(VOF) method is employed to track the free-surface movement. The results are presented as the behavior of flow structure and temperature distribution of the molten zone. The impact of Marangoni number(Ma) is also investigated on free-surface deformation as well as the instability of thermocapillary convection. The free-surface exhibits a noticeable axisymmetric(but it is non-centrosymmetric) and elliptical shape along the circumferential direction. This specific surface shape presents a typical narrow ‘neck-shaped' structure with convex at two ends of the zone and concave at the mid-plane along the axial direction. At both θ = 0° and θ = 90°, the deformation ratio ξ increases rapidly with Ma at first, and then increases slowly. Moreover, the hydrothermal wave number m and the instability of thermocapillary convection increase with Ma. 展开更多

The initial collision between Indian and Asian continents marked the starting point for transformation of land-sea thermal contrast, uplift of the Tibet-Himalaya orogen, and climate change in Asia.In this paper,we review the published literatures from the past 30 years in order to draw consensus on the processes of initial collision and suturing that took place between the Indian and Asian plates.Following a comparison of the different methods that have been used to constrain the initial timing of collision,we propose that the tectono-sedimentary response in the peripheral foreland basin provides the most sensitive index of this event, and that paleomagnetism presents independent evidence as an alternative, reliable, and quantitative research method. In contrast to previous studies that have suggested collision between India and Asia started in Pakistan between ca.55 Ma and50 Ma and progressively closed eastwards, more recent researches have indicated that this major event first occurred in the center of the Yarlung Tsangpo suture zone(YTSZ) between ca.65 Ma and 63 Ma and then spreading both eastwards and westwards. While continental collision is a complicated process, including the processes of deformation, sedimentation, metamorphism, and magmatism, different researchers have tended to define the nature of this event based on their own understanding,an intuitive bias that has meant that its initial timing has remained controversial for decades. Here,we recommend the use of reconstructions of each geological event within the orogenic evolution sequence as this will allow interpretation of collision timing on the basis of multidisciplinary methods. 展开更多
