With the advent of the fourth industrial revolution, the construction industry has undergone a paradigm shift. The smart construction technology market is expected to grow 12%annually in developed countries due to advanced technology investments. It is expected that businesses requiring highly sophisticated technology, for instance companies that need their old facilities upgraded, will become the main focus of the market. As building information modeling(BIM)design is becoming mandatory, such as in the Korea Public Procurement Service, researches regarding building automation, construction, and operation integration management systems based on BIM are conducted. In addition, for construction projects of over 10 billion won, design value engineering(Design VE)implementation, including life cycle cost(LCC)analysis,is mandatory at the design stage to improve quality and reduce the lifetime costs of buildings. In this study,we propose an improvement plan for LCC analysis at the design stage using the KBIMS library, which is an open BIM library developed by the Korean government and research groups. We analyze the existing LCC method,KBIMS library, and attribute information, and model the process that is applied in the LCC analysis system. This is expected to complement the LCC analysis system and improve work productivity. 展开更多

The manner architects and architectural critics distinguish between them varies from that of the public. In fact a style welt perceived by civil society was read as pathological by architectural academia. This paper examines the values and perceptions of contemporary architecture by architects and civil society. Through qualitative methodology, a project by each of the following leading contemporary architects - Renzo Piano, Norman Foster and Rem Koolhaas - was analyzed. The selected designs, all commissioned not more than a decade ago, vary in locations from Malta to Lebanon to India. The study concludes that design values and perceptions of architecture as read by members of the architectural profession do not tally with those of the public. The emphasis by architects is on the aesthetic whilst non-architects focus on the utilitarian dimension. Furthermore, the rhetorical language which architects use is not read as such by the public. The assessment of the public is based on the existential reality which they experience. The perception of civil society matters; it is at the core of architectural design values. 展开更多

While scholars involved in studying the ethics and politics flowing from digital information and communication systems have sought to impact the design and deployment of digital technologies, the fast pace and iterative tempo of technical development in these contexts, and the lack of structured engagement with sociotechnical questions, have been major barriers to ensuring values are considered explicitly in the R&D process. Here I introduce Apologos,a lightweight design methodology informed by the author’s experience of the challenges and opportunities of interdisciplinary collaboration between computational and social sciences over a five-year period.Apologos, which is inspired by“design apologetics”,is intended as an initial mechanism to introduce technologists to the process of considering how human values impact the digital design process. 展开更多

The crowdsourced OpenStreetMap mapping platform is utilized by countless stakeholders worldwide for various purposes and applications.Individuals, researchers, governments, commercial, and humanitarian organizations,in addition to the engineers, professionals, and technical developers, use OpenStreetMap both as data contributors and consumers. The storage, usage, and integration of volunteered geographical data in software applications often create complex ethical dilemmas and values regarding the relationships between different categories of stakeholders. It is therefore common for moral preferences of stakeholders to be neglected. This paper investigates the integration of ethical values in OpenStreetMap using the value sensitive design methodology that examines technical, empirical, and conceptual aspects at each design stage. We use the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team,an existing volunteered geographic information initiative,as a case study. Our investigation shows that although OpenStreetMap does integrate ethical values in its organizational structure,a deeper understanding of its direct and indirect stakeholders’perspectives is still required. This study is expected to assist organizations that contribute to or use OpenStreetMap in recognizing and preserving existing and important ethical values. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to evaluate ethical values methodically and comprehensively in the design process of the OpenStreetMap platform. 展开更多
