The investigation centers on sheet pile design, examining two primary methodologies: Limit Equilibrium Methods (LEM) and Soil-Structure Interaction Methods (SSIM). While LEM methods, grounded in classical principles, provide valuable insights for preliminary design considerations, they may encounter limitations in addressing real-world complexities. In contrast, SSIM methods, including the SSI-SR approach, introduce precision and depth to the field. By employing numerical techniques such as Finite Element (FE) and Finite Difference (FD) analyses, these methods enable engineers to navigate the dynamics of soil-structure interaction. The exploration extends to SSI-FE, highlighting its essential role in civil engineering. By integrating Finite Element analysis with considerations for soil-structure interaction, the SSI-FE method offers a holistic understanding of how structures dynamically interact with their geotechnical environment. Throughout this exploration, the study dissects critical components governing SSIM methods, providing engineers with tools to navigate the intricate landscape of geotechnical design. The study acknowledges the significance of the Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model while recognizing its limitations, and guiding practitioners toward informed decision-making in geotechnical analyses. As the article concludes, it underscores the importance of continuous learning and innovation for the future of geotechnical engineering. With advancing technology and an evolving understanding of soil-structure interaction, the study remains committed to ensuring the safety, stability, and efficiency of geotechnical structures through cutting-edge design and analysis techniques.展开更多

Nevertheless, these techniques could be applied in engineering processes as well in order to improve the effectiveness and the efficiency of manufacturing processes in BI (building industry). Focusing on the case study of GLT (glued-laminated timber), this paper shows the procedure of programming a parametric algorithm adopted by authors that pursues two specific design intents: reducing the usage of unneeded high-quality raw material and improving the efficiency of production processes by producing DF (digital fabrication) contents for standard production systems of GLT. According to different European and international standards, thanks to FEM (finite element model) simulations and curvature analysis, the algorithm allows saving at least 33% of high-quality raw material and, according to early first surveys on a standard production system, 30% of operation time among product engineering-processes.展开更多

The SBD technique is implemented by integrating the advanced CFD codes, the global optimization algorithms and the geometry modification methods, which offers a new way for the hullform optimization design and the configuration innovation. The multiple speed integrated optimization for the hullform design is a challenge. In this paper, an example of the technique application for a fishing ship hullform optimization at different speeds is demonstrated. In this optimization process, the free-form deformation method is applied to automatically modify the geometry of the ship, and the multi-objective particle swarm optimization(MOPSO) algorithm is adopted for exploring the design space. Two objective functions, the total resistances at two different speeds(12 kn and 14 kn) are assessed by the RANS solvers. The optimization results show that the decrease of the total resistance is significant after the optimization at the two speeds, with a reduction of 5.0% and 11.2%, respectively. Finally, dedicated experimental validations for the design model and the optimized model are carried out for the computation and the optimization processes. At the two speeds, the reduction of the total resistance in the model scale is about 6.0% and 11.8% after the optimization. It is a valuable result in view of the small modifications allowed and the good initial performances of the original model. The given practical example demonstrates the feasibility and the superiority of the proposed SBD technique for the multiple speed integrated optimization.展开更多

Experiments were designed to investigate the effect of porosity, applied stress and sliding velocity on the wear rate of copper compacts, leading to the finding that the effects of both porosity and applied stress of the wear test on the wear rate are approximately similar and higher than that of sliding velocity. The investigation concerning the effect of porosity on compressive strength indicated that the stress-strain curve of high-porosity compact exhibited identifiable ultimate strength points, though low-porosity compact showed distinct stages of elastic plastic behavior.展开更多
