The intuitive fuzzy set has found important application in decision-making and machine learning. To enrich and utilize the intuitive fuzzy set, this study designed and developed a deep neural network-based glaucoma eye detection using fuzzy difference equations in the domain where the retinal images converge.Retinal image detections are categorized as normal eye recognition, suspected glaucomatous eye recognition, and glaucomatous eye recognition.Fuzzy degrees associated with weighted values are calculated to determine the level of concentration between the fuzzy partition and the retinal images. The proposed model was used to diagnose glaucoma using retinal images and involved utilizing the Convolutional Neural Network(CNN)and deep learning to identify the fuzzy weighted regularization between images. This methodology was used to clarify the input images and make them adequate for the process of glaucoma detection. The objective of this study was to propose a novel approach to the early diagnosis of glaucoma using the Fuzzy Expert System(FES)and Fuzzy differential equation(FDE).The intensities of the different regions in the images and their respective peak levels were determined.Once the peak regions were identified, the recurrence relationships among those peaks were then measured.Image partitioning was done due to varying degrees of similar and dissimilar concentrations in the image.Similar and dissimilar concentration levels and spatial frequency generated a threshold image from the combined fuzzy matrix and FDE.This distinguished between a normal and abnormal eye condition, thus detecting patients with glaucomatous eyes. 展开更多

AIM: To evaluate the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease(DED) in adolescents. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, case-control study and outpatients aged 10 to 19y were recruited from six eye clinics of various practices and locations in Japan, and 253 non-DED subjects and 70 DED patients were enrolled. Participants were examined for DED-related signs. Patients were also interviewed to ascertain the presence or absence of six common DED-related symptoms: dryness, irritation, pain, eye fatigue, blurring, and photophobia. Main outcome measures were differences in signs and symptoms of dry eye disease between boys and girls.RESULTS: Of the 323 adolescents recruited, 70(21.7%) were diagnosed with DED. Significant differences between the non-DED and DED groups were found for short tear break-up time(BUT; ≤5s; P=0.000) and superficial punctate keratopathy(SPK; staining score ≥3; P=0.000). Late adolescent girls reported fewer symptoms than late adolescent boys, although their DED-related signs were worse compared to other groups. The prevalence and severity of DED were similar in the Tokyo area compared with suburban and local areas but myopic errors were worse. CONCLUSION: We find that adolescents reported symptoms of DED similar to those found in adults, and the majority have short BUT-type DED. The prevalence and severity of DED in late adolescent girls is comparable with adults. Adolescents with DED are underserved and we believe that DED is a hidden but potentially serious health problem for this age group. 展开更多

BACKGROUND: Certain neural functions, such as peripheral reflexes, differ between genders, while higher brain functions, such as language, are asymmetrically distributed between the two hemispheres. The question remains as to whether depth perception differs between hemispheric laterality and genders, and whether it is affected by eye dominance. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether depth perception is influenced by factors such as gender, eye dominance, and hemispheric lateralization by recording evoked potential associated with depth perception. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: A contrast observation based on neuroelectrophysiology was performed at the Department of Biophysics of Ege University Medical School between June 2006 and April 2007. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 34 subjects, 19 females and 15 males, were included in the study with a mean age of (31.0 ± 6.9) years. All subjects were free of neurological or psychological disorders, or problems such as strabismus or vision correction. METHODS: Random-dot stereograms were used to elicit brain activity. A specially designed signal acquisition system employing two computers was used to record evoked potentials from both hemispheres via two pairs of scalp electrodes placed over the occipitotemporal areas of both hemispheres at symmetrical locations. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Negative potential with a mean latency of (211.21 ±25.55) ms and a mean amplitude of (6.05 ± 1.53) pV was recorded from both occipitotemporal areas in 30 out of 34 participants. This was termed "Nd" and represented the evoked potential associated with depth perception. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in Nd amplitude or latency between the two hemispheres, the two eyes, or genders (P 〉 0.05). CONCLUSION: The evoked potential associated with depth perception was not influenced by gender, hemisphere, or eye dominance. 展开更多

BACKGROUND: The wave form, latency and wave amplitude of visual evoked potentials (VEP) are obviously affected by the stimulative parameters, physiological status of the subjects and anesthetics, thus there are greater normal variations and individual differences. The features of flash VEP (F-VEP) are to be observed. OBJECTIVE: To observe and compare the differences of F-VEP latencies and wave amplitudes between eyes in rabbits, and investigate the correlation with sex and the side of eyes. DESIGN: A comparative animal experiment. SETTING: Department of Neurosurgery, General Hospital of Chinese PLA. MATERIALS: The experiment was carried out in the neurophysiological laboratory of the Institute of Neurosciences, General Hospital of Chinese PLA from September 2004 to February 2005. Thirty big-ear rabbits of clean degree, 15 males and 15 females, weighing 2.0-2.5 kg, were provided by the animal center of the General Hospital of Chinese PLA. METHODS: Viking-IV perioperative monitor and flash stimulator for special use were applied. The rabbits were anesthetized with intramuscular injection of compound ketamine. The recording electrode was placed at 3 mm anterior to exoccipital tuberosity (onion, Oz), and the reference electrode was placed at the ear edge of the same side. The stimulative frequency was 1.9 Hz, and the amplifier was 50 μV; The range of wave filter was 5 Hz for high pass and 100 Hz for low pass; The average overlapping was 200 times, and the analytical time was 250 ms. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Comparison of F-VEP wave forms; F-VEP latencies and wave amplitudes. RESULTS: All the 30 rabbits were involved in the analysis of results. ① Comparison of F-VEP wave forms in rabbits: The F-VEP waves mainly manifested as positive-negative-positive (PNP). The F-VEP manifestations to light stimulations were extremely similar between left and right eyes, and the wave amplitudes of both eyes were obviously increased. ② Determinations of F-VEP latencies and wave amplitudes: There were no significant differences in the latencies and wave amplitudes of F-VEP between the two groups (P > 0.05), the latencies of P1, N1 and P2 waves of left eye were (32.59±2.01), (43.85±4.35) and (66.20±8.13) ms, respectively, and the wave amplitudes of P1, N1 and P2 waves of left eye were (16.45±10.22), (7.93±3.56) and (17.62±8.18) μV. F-VEP latencies were stable with small changes, whereas amplitudes had greater changes. CONCLUSION: ① The latency and wave amplitudes F-VEP were stable with good repetition. ② The latencies and wave amplitudes had no significant differences between males and females, as well as between left and right eyes. Further investigation should be undertaken on the animal and clinical field. 展开更多

Robust non-intrusive eye location plays an important role in vision-based man-mechine interaction. A modified Hausdorff distance based measure to localize the eyes is proposed, which could tolerate various changes in eye pose, shape, and scale. To eliminate the effects of the illumination variations, an 8- neighbour-based transformation of the gray images is proposed. The transformed image is less sensitive to illumination changes while preserves the appearance information of eyes. All the localized candidates of eyes are identified by back-propagation neural networks. Experiments demonstrate that the robust method for eye location is able to localize eyes with different eye sizes, shapes, and poses under different illuminations. 展开更多

Virtual reality(VR)has been a promising tool for developing visuospatial tasks.Among visuospatial tasks, mental rotation tasks are widely used in the assessment of visuospatial ability.Males have a distinct advantage in mental rotation ability compared to females, yet it is generally produced by investigations based on two-dimensional(2D)images on a computer screen.Sex differences in mental rotation tasks with three-dimensional(3D)objects in VR were not fully investigated. It is unclear whether the male's advantages in 2D mental rotation tasks are weakened in 3D tasks. The aim of this study was to provide new insights into the understanding of sex differences in mental rotation tasks presented in VR.Here,we developed a VR mental rotation task(VR-MRT)using 3D objects presented by a head-mounted display(HMD)and used VR-based eye tracking and electroencephalography(EEG)to examine eye movements and neural oscillations for males and females. Our results showed that females preferred a piecemeal strategy compared to males, suggesting a significant sex difference in visual strategy.More importantly,we found no significant sex differences in alpha-band and beta-band oscillations related to rotation processes of VR-MRT.These findings indicated that sex differences in the VR-MRT were mainly attributed to the selection of visual strategy rather than the rotation processes. The study helps to comprehensively understand the dominant factors contributing to the sex differences in the VR-MRT. 展开更多
