New method for analyzing recrystallization kinetics of deformed metal by differential scanning calorimeter

The drawn copper wires have been analyzed by differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) and a new method, which uses DSC measurements to determine the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov(JMAK) exponent via introducing Arrhenius behavior and modifying the baseline of DSC curves, has been proposed. The results show that JMAK exponent and recrystallization activation energy of the drawn copper wires with a strain of 2.77 are about 2.39 and 125 k J/mol, respectively. The line linking the tangency points of DSC curve hypotenuse can be used as the baseline when calculating recrystallization fraction. The JMAK exponent obtained by the DSC method is in a good agreement with that obtained by microhardness measurements. Compared to traditional methods to measure the exponent, the proposed method is faster and less labor intensive. 展开更多

This work describes thermal decomposition behaviour of plastic bonded explosives(PBXs) based on mixture of 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane(HMX) and 2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-trinitrobenzene(TATB)with Viton A as polymer binder. Thermal decomposition of PBXs was undertaken by applying simultaneous thermal analysis(STA) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) to investigate influence of the HMX amount on thermal behavior and its kinetics. Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) indicated that the thermal decomposition of PBXs based on mixture of HMX and TATB was occurred in a three-steps. The first step was mainly due to decomposition of HMX. The second step was ascribed due to decomposition of TATB, while the third step was occurred due to decomposition of the polymer matrices. The thermal decomposition % was increased with increasing HMX amount. The kinetics related to thermal decomposition were investigated under non-isothermal for a single heating rate measurement. The variation in the activation energy of PBXs based on mixture of HMX and TATB was observed with varying the HMX amount. The kinetics from the results of TGA data at various heating rates under non-isothermal conditions were also calculated by Flynn—Wall—Ozawa(FWO) and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose(KAS)methods. The activation energies calculated by employing FWO method were very close to those obtained by KAS method. The mean activation energy calculated by FWO and KAS methods was also a good agreement with the activation energy obtained from single heating rate measurement in the first step decomposition. 展开更多

The results indicate that P refinement, which can decrease the activation energy as well as nucleation work of eutectic solidification, can increase the eutectic nucleation frequency of Al-25wt.%Si alloy, so the addition of P can refme the eutectic structures of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys. According to the calculations, there is a certain relationship between the precipitation of primary silicon and eutectic solidification, and the eutectic nucleation mode is independent of morphology transition. 展开更多

The results show that the average size of primary silicon in Al 25%Si alloy without and with phosphorus addition are 250 μm and 30 μm, respectively. But the primary and eutectic growth temperature is raised by about 17.3 ℃ and 4?℃ respectively due to phosphorus addition. The primary nucleation temperatures are 745.0 ℃ and 762.0 ℃ for untreated and treated samples and in addition, the enthalpy changes of primary and eutectic transformation are -261.0 J/g and -397.3 J/g without phosphorus addition, -294.2 J/g and -386.1 J/g with phosphorus addition, respectively. Otherwise the mechanisms of refinement and thermal transformation of Al 25%Si alloy in solidifying process are also discussed. [ 展开更多

The solid-liquid equilibria of musk ketone + musk xylene, musk xylene +l,3-dimethyl-2,4-dinitro-5-tert-butyl benzene are measured by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), these systems are proved to be simple eutectics. Moreover the melting points and the fusion enthalpies of musk ketone, musk xylene and 1,3-dimethyl-2,4-dinitro-5-tert-butyl benzene are also measured by the DSC. These solid-liquid equilibrium data and the heats of fusion are reported for the first time. Then UNIFAC model is used to correlate the sofid-liquid equilibrium data. It is shown that the solid-liquid equilibria of musk systems can be predicted by the UNIFAC model. 展开更多

Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) was used to measure the exothermic and endothermic reaction during the brazing process that the cortex metal and the base metal are melted and re-crystal. The analysis results inidicate that eutectic reaction is the main reaction in the melted cortex metal crystallization process. But the main reaction in the melted base metal crystallization process is the reaction that α-A1 segregated out. According to the experimental details, the critical work of nucleation is 3.82×10-17J, the critical radius of nucleation is 8.69×10-10 m, the volume of critical crystal nucleus is 2.75×10-27 m3 and the per unit cell in critical crystal nucleus is 43. 展开更多

The effects of severe plastic deformation and heat treatment on the transformation behavior of explosively welded duplex TiNi-TiNi shape memory alloys (SMAs) were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) measurements. The explosively welded duplex TiNi-TiNi plate of 0.7 mm thickness was cold-rolled at room temperature to a 60% reduction in thickness and then annealed at different temperatures for different durations. The results showed that low temperature (623-723K) heat-treatment led to the crystallization of the amorphous region, and re-crystallization occurred in the specimens annealed at higher temperatures (over 873 K). Research indicated that the change of martensitic transformation temperature is due to the change of internal stresses with increasing heat treatment temperature. The change of annealing time also led to a change in martensitic transformation temperature, which was associated with the precipitation and decomposition of Ti3Ni4 in TiNi-1. 展开更多

The condensed structure of atactic-polystyrene (a - PS ) films cast from the solutions of differ- ent concentrations in dichloromethane under vacuum and atmospheric conditions was studied by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). It was found that only under vacuum evaporating conditions did the endothermic peak in the DSC curves of a-PS films depend on the concentration of the a-PS solution. For the samples cast from the solution of concentration below 0. 010 g/mL, no endothermal peak was observed, but for those cast from the solution of concentration above 0. 020 g/mL, obvious endothermal peaks appeared. The onset of the endothermal peak is correlated with the critical overlapping concentration c' (0. 010-0. 020 g/mL), which is in agreement with the theoretically calculated one (Ccal=0.014 g/mL). 展开更多

The hydrides in industrial lime,alumina,magnesia,and calcium fluoride were investigated through differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction,and their mass losses during heating up were studied by thermogravimetric analysis method.The results indicate that the industrial alumina,lime,and magnesia,which have more moisture or hydride and mainly include γ-Al2O3,Ca(OH)2,and Mg(OH)2,lose more mass during thermogravimetric analysis process.However,the mass of premelted slag consisting of lime,fluorite,alumina,and magnesia has almost no change,which means no hydride in it.Some relationships for calculating the mass loss were established according to the results of thermogravimetric analysis.These results will be in favor of setting up the rational calcination criterion for slag used in electroslag remelting process. 展开更多
