T. S. Eliot's Spiritual Journey in Designing The Cocktail Party as a Drama of Conversion

In his quest for spiritual fulfillment, Thomas Stearns Eliot conducts a meticulous religious study which teaches him distinctive interpretations of human existence and their various functions that they are supposed to assume in the world. Eliot's personal attachment to religious knowledge and his reflections of religious studies inevitably manifest themselves in his literary works; be it his dramas or poems, mostly in the forms of philosophical and psychoanalytical analysis of his characters and the detected problems observed in their relationships. The Cocktail Party, a play starting off as a drawing-room comedy soon converts to a serious analysis of human psychology and the nature of human interactions. While engaging with these particular points, the play offers possibilities to discuss several religious allusions, though dealt with subtly. Integrated with religion, characters' attitudes towards a given situation and their final decision position them in their quest either in "hypothetical" enlightenment or in a "supposed" repetition of a vicious circle. The enforcing power behind the play is interestingly a psychiatrist, who adds dynamism and mystery to the plot and has a special task in making the play a drama of conversion. The inner conflicts of the characters which ultimately lead to a series of problems in their relationships are the main concern which causes the characters search for different solutions. Accordingly, they make their own choices to cease their inner struggles. This paper aims to explore the concept of conversion in Eliot's The Cocktail Party with references to the playwright's religious journey in his literary career. 展开更多

Based on the guidelines set by Ningbo Theatre who asked me to translate translations and features of performance-oriented drama, this commentary will deal with how I translate characters and cultural specific items from prospective of skopos theory and explain the reason why I translate it this way.I am required to present vivid characters and bridge the cultural gap while translating. During the process of translation, I try to use specific words or local dialect to differ one person from another. Sometimes, I make one person's language less colloquial which is consistent with his own personality. When encountering some cultural barriers that would make audience confused, I adopt domestication to translate the dialogue. I will add some explanatory words to make audience get to know it and free translation to avoid cultural confusion. In this commentary, six examples are given to show my strategies of translating this book. 展开更多

Due to the specific characteristic which is related to stage performance, the academic researches of drama translation have so far been limited. Before the mid 1970 s, discussions about drama translation were mainly limited to the study of the translated text of drama by applying the prescribed method of comparative analysis in order to explore the equivalence between the translation and the original. While after the mid 1970 s, researches on drama translation started to be done by applying the descriptive method. Some translation theorists and scholars began to study the translated text of drama on the background of target language culture, which had made fruitful achievements. Recently, studies on drama translation mostly paid attention to such issues as the nature of drama translation, the purpose of drama translation, the characteristics of the translated text of drama, performability and orality in drama translation, transformation of dramatic culture and the status of drama translators, etc. By applying Xie Tianzhen's theory of creative treason, this drama translation can be studied from a new perspective. 展开更多

Objective: Using simulation in medical education was introduced in the 17th century, applying different techniques. The introduction of using simulated patients (SP) was also of great importance in both learning and evaluation processes. Aims: This current study aims at assessing medical students’ perception about the use of well-trained drama students from the school of Arts in simulated session of breaking bad news encounter. Study Design: This is a per- and post-test study. Methods: 112 students were asked to fill a pre-validated questionnaire, who trained from January 2017 till the end of July 2017 pre- and post-exposure to simulated clinical encounter, where one well trained senior drama student played the role of patient, one student played the doctor who would break the bad news (BBN), debriefing before the encounter, and discussion after took place. Another validated questionnaire was distributed after the encounter, to assess the students’ experience. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 20. Results: Scores of all questions showed statistically significant improvement after the simulation session (p-value Conclusion: Simulation encounter, using drama students who are well-trained in human grief reaction, making BBN learning more positive and effective, merging two faculties improved the learning experience of both medical and Drama students. 展开更多

Forced displacement poses a major global crisis that must be tackled at all levels:political,socio-economic,and psychological.This paper describes the psychological impact of forced displacement on women and explains the significance of drama therapy intervention(DTI)in treating and empowering trauma impacted refugee women.Frequently used to treat immigrant and refugee adolescents and children in many host communities,DTI is seldom applied to women refugees who suffer from psychological disorders compounded by fleeing their home country and by difficulties faced in host communities.This makes our study the first on women refugees leaving a zone of war and residing in dire conditions in refugee camps.To best analyze the impact of DTI,this study(1)utilizes a qualitative approach to explain the effects of drama therapy intervention on Syrian and Palestinian-Syrian refugee women in Lebanon;(2)It applies a modified five-phase DTI program to fit the experiment setting and conducts post-DTI interviews;(3)It uses interpretative phenomenological analysis(IPA)method to identify emergent themes and to analyze the effectiveness of DTI;(4)Finally,the study concludes that drama therapy can both help refugee women deal with war-related/post-migration emotional trauma and can implement positive changes and help its participants form social bonds among each other. 展开更多
