This study explored the applicability of monthly moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and land surface temperature (LST) data for agricultural drought monitoring in the Guanzhong Plain, China in 2003. The data were processed using TVDI, calculated by parameterizing the relationship between the MODIS NDVI and LST data. We compared the effectiveness of TVDI against CWSI, derived from the MOD16 products, for drought monitoring. In addition, the surface soil moisture and monthly pre- cipitation were collected and used for verification of the results. Results from the study showed that: (1) drought conditions measured by TVDI and CWSI had a number of similarities, which indicated that both CWSI and TVDI can be used for drought monitoring, although they had some discrepancies in the spatiotemporal characteristics of drought intensity of this region; and (2) both standardized precipitation index (SPI) and SM contents at the depth of 10 and 20 cm had better correlations to CWSI than to TVDI, indicating that there were more statistically significant relationships between CWSI and SPI/SM, and that CWSI is a more reliable indicator for assessing and monitoring droughts in this region.展开更多

After calculating the correlation coefficient, root-mean-square error, and standard deviation between the iTVDI and observed topsoil moisture at 10 and 20 cm for seven sites, the effectiveness of the new index in depicting topsoil moisture conditions was verified. The drought area indicated by iTVDI mapping was then compared with the drought-affected area reported by the local government. The results indicated that the iTVDI can monitor drought more accurately than the traditional TVDI during the dry season in Yunnan Province. Using iTVDI facilitates drought warning and irrigation scheduling, and the expectation is that this new index can be broadly applied in other areas.展开更多

By using data at 42 meteorological stations of the Pearl River Basin, the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index( SPEI) at different time scales was calculated. Based on the SPEIs of 1- 12 months,a newly proposed index for drought--Joint Drought Index( JDI) was established under the multi-scale perspective through the copula function. Since short-term SPEIs are essential for the identification of emerging droughts and long-term SPEIs are useful for prolonged droughts, the JDI,which integrates all the usefull informations of drought and can thus form an overall judgement,is superior than the single SPEI in drought monitoring. By the forcast evaluation system and comparison to the actual drought, the accuracy and effectiveness of JDI in drought monitoring were verified. In general,JDI can be used as a new ideal index for future drought monitoring and assessment. Additionly,we analyzed the spatio-temperal characteristics of drought across the Pearl River Basin using the JDI. The results indicate that mild drought was the most frequent drought occurred in the Pearl River Basin over the past half century, and moderate drought followed. Severe drought and extreme drought would appear occasionally while exceptional drought could hardly be found. A dry-wet-dry interdecadal variation pattern had been found from the 1960 s to the 2000 s. Since the 21 stcentury,an obvious trend toward drought can be observed in the whole basin, especially in the Xijiang subbasin, which, consequently, poses an increasing challenge for the water resource planning and management.展开更多

This paper makes an improvement for MPI method which makes it suitable for surface covered by vegetation. The MPI by using single frequency at different polarizations is used to discriminate the bare soil and vegetation which overcomes the difficulty in previous algorithms by using optical remote sensing data, and then the revision is made according to the different land surface types. The validation by using ground measurement data indicates that revision for different land surface types can improve the retrieval accuracy. The average error is about 24.5% by using the ground truth data obtained from ground observation stations, and the retrieval error is about 13.7% after making a revision by using ground measurement data from local observation stations for different surface types. The improved MPI method and precipitation are used to analyze the drought in Southwest China, and the analysis indicates the soil moisture retrieved by improved MPI method can be used to monitor the drought.展开更多

Compared with VWSI, MVWSI eliminates the difference caused by the spatial and temporal distribution of VWSI. MVWSI was applied to monitor drought over Sichuan and Chongqing, China in 2006, suggesting that MVWSI can demonstrate the whole process of drought from its emergence and development to its weakening and disappearance. The relative precipitation index(RPI) is used to examine the effectiveness of MVWSI. The examination result shows that MVWSI and RPI have high consistency in spatial distribution and in-site time series analysis. Compared with vegetation condition index(VCI), temperature condition index(TCI), vegetation temperature condition index(VTCI) and temperature vegetation drought index(TVDI), MVWSI is simpler in calculation and more stable hence more easily realized in application.展开更多

Droughts coupled with water scarcity are becoming a serious threat to the economic growth, social cohesion and political stability. Rainfall time series from four rain stations covering the Jordan River Basin were analyzed for drought characterization and forecasting using standardized precipitation index (SPI), Markov chain and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model. The 7-year moving average of Amman data showed a decreasing trend while data from the other three stations were stable or showed an increasing trend. The frequency analysis indicated 2-year return period for near zero SPI values while the return period for moderate drought was 7 years. Successive droughts had occurred at least three times during the past 40 years. Severe droughts are expected once every 20 - 25 year period at all rain stations. The extreme droughts were rare events with return periods between 80 and 115 years. There are equal occurrence probabilities for drought and wet conditions in any given year, irrespective, of the condition in the previous year. The results showed that ARIMA model was successful in predicting the overall statistics with a given period at annual scales. The overall number of predicted/observed droughts during the validation periods were 2/2 severe droughts for Amman station and, 0/1, 1/1, 0/1 extreme droughts for Amman, Irbid and Mafraq stations, respectively. In addition, the ARIMA model also predicted 3 out of 4 actual moderate droughts for Amman and Mafraq stations. It was concluded that early warning of developing droughts can be deduced form the monthly Markov transitional probabilities. ARIMA models can be used as a forecasting tool of the future drought trends. Using the first and second order Markov probabilities can complement the ARIMA predictions.展开更多

This study focuses on utilizing the latest Version-7 TRMM Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA 3B42V7) data for drought condition monitoring in the Weihe River Basin (0.135×10^6 km2). The accuracy of the monthly TMPA 3B42V7 satellite precipitation data was firstly evaluated against the ground rain gauge observations. The statistical characteristics between a short period data series (1998-2013) and a long period data series (1961-2013) were then compared. The TMPA 3B42V7-based SPI (Standardized Precipitation Index) sequences were finally validated and analyzed at various temporal scales for assessing the drought conditions. The results indicate that the monthly TMPA 3B42V7 precipitation is in a high agreement with the rain gauge observations and can accurately capture the temporal and spatial characteristics of rainfall within the Weihe River Basin. The short period data can present the characteristics of long period record, and it is thus acceptable to use the short period data series to estimate the cumulative probability function in the SPI calculation. The TMPA 3B42V7-based SPI matches well with that based on the rain gauge observations at multiple time scales (i.e., 1-, 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-month) and can give an acceptable temporal distribution of drought conditions. It suggests that the TMPA 3B42V7 precipitation data can be used for monitoring the occurrence of drought in the Weihe River Basin.展开更多

The ensuing dry conditions can persist for weeks to months, with detrimental effects on natural ecosystems and crop cultivation. Increases in the frequency of these rare events in a future warmer climate would have significant societal impact. This study uses an ensemble of 10 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project(CMIP) models to investigate the projected change in agricultural flash drought during the 21st century. Comparison across geographical regions and climatic zones indicates that individual events are preceded by anomalously low relative humidity and precipitation, with long-term trends governed by changes in temperature, relative humidity, and soil moisture. As a result of these processes, the frequency of both upperlevel and root-zone flash drought is projected to more than double in the mid-and high latitudes over the 21st century, with hot spots developing in the temperate regions of Europe, and humid regions of South America, Europe, and southern Africa.展开更多

The province of Fars, Iran, has faced particularly severe drought and ground water problems over the course of the last decade. However, previous research on the subject reveals a lack of useful information regarding droughts in this province. This paper presents a fast, efficient and reliable method that can be used to produce drought maps in which Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) images are processed and then compared with SPOT vegetation maps. Ten-day maximum Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) maps were produced and vegetation drought indices such as the Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) were calculated. Furthermore, a Temperature Condition Index (TCI) was extracted from the thermal bands of AVHRR images in order to produce the Vegetation Health Index (VHI). Remotely sensed data was then compared with hydrological and meteorological data from 1998 to 2007. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was used to quantify the precipitation deficit while the Standard Water Level Index (SWI) was developed to assess the groundwater recharge deficit. Instead of correlation coefficients, spatial correlation through visual comparison was found to provide better and more meaningful pictures. The highest correlation values were obtained when VHI or Drought Severity Index (DSI) values were correlated with the current month’s SWI data. DSI maps showed strong vegetation conditions existing for the majority of the study period. For most counties in Fars, strong Pearson correlations observed between the DSI and the SWI of the same month reflect high rates of ground water consumption. The results of this study indicate that the proposed method is a potentially promising method for early drought awareness which can be used for drought risk management in semi-arid climates such as in Fars, Iran. This study also recommends that the Iranian government develop programs to help decrease the consumption of ground water resources in the province of Fars to ensure the long term sustainability of the watersheds in this province.展开更多

The use of remote sensing data and geospatial techniques to monitor and map drought severity expanded in the last decades with progressive developments in data sources and processing. This study investigates the correlations among drought indices derived with soil moisture stress (K) obtained from ground data collected from fields cultivated with barley. The study, carried out in Yarmouk basin in the north of Jordan, includes NDVI, PDI, MPDI and PVI derived from Landsat 8-OLI and Sentinel 2-MSI. Results showed different behavior among the indices and throughout the 2016/2017 growing season, with maximum correlation between PDI and MPDI followed by NDVI with PVI. Correlations among the remote sensing indices and K for different soil depths during March-April were significant for most indices with a maximum (R2) of 0.82 for K30-50 and MPDI, followed by K30-50 with NDVI. Drought severity maps for the month of March showed different trends for the different indices, with similarities between MPDI and PDI. The map of drought severity combined from the remote sensing indices and K showed that PDI and soil moisture could significantly explain 56% of variations in spatial patterns of drought, while the combination of MPDI, PDI and NDVI could significantly explain up to 59% of variations in drought severity map. Therefore, the study recommends the adoption of these remotely sensed indices for monitoring and mapping of agricultural droughts.展开更多

This paper investigates the projected changes in drought characteristics and drought propagation in the Umatilla River Basin in northeastern Oregon for mid-century(2030–2059) and late-century(2070–2099) climate scenarios. Drought characteristics for projected climates were determined using downscaled CMIP5 climate datasets from ten climate models and Soil and Water Assessment Tool to simulate effects on hydrologic processes. Short-term(three months) drought characteristics(frequency, duration, and severity) were analyzed using four drought indices, including the Standardized Precipitation Index(SPI-3), Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index(SPEI-3), Standardized Streamflow Index(SSI-3), and the Standardized Soil Moisture Index(SSMI-3). Results indicate that short-term meteorological droughts are projected to become more prevalent, with up to a 20% increase in the frequency of SPI-3drought events. Short-term hydrological droughts are projected to become more frequent(average increase of 11% in frequency of SSI-3 drought events), more severe, and longer in duration(average increase of 8% for short-term droughts).Similarly, short-term agricultural droughts are projected to become more frequent(average increase of 28% in frequency of SSMI-3 drought events) but slightly shorter in duration(average decrease of 4%) in the future. Historically, drought propagation time from meteorological to hydrological drought is shorter than from meteorological to agricultural drought in most sub-basins. For the projected climate scenarios, the decrease in drought propagation time will likely stress the timing and capacity of water supply in the basin for irrigation and other uses.展开更多

This study used data from multiple sources, including MOD13 A3, TRMM 3 B43, and SRTMDEM, for Yunnan Province, China from 2009 to 2018 to calculate the tropical rainfall condition index(TRCI), vegetation condition index(VCI), temperature condition index(TCI), and elevation factors. Principal component analysis(PCA) and analytic hierarchy process(AHP) were used to construct comprehensive drought monitoring models for Yunnan Province. The reliability of the models was verified, following which the drought situation in Yunnan Province for the past ten years was analysed. The results showed that:(1) The comprehensive drought index(CDI) had a high correlation with the standardized precipitation index, standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index, temperature vegetation dryness index, and CLDAS(China Meteorological Administration land data assimilation system), indicating that the CDI was a strong indicator of drought through meteorological, remote sensing and soil moisture monitoring.(2) The droughts from 2009 to 2018 showed generally consistent spatiotemporal changes. Droughts occurred in most parts of the province, with an average drought frequency of 29% and four droughtprone centres.(3) Monthly drought coverage during 2009 to 2014 exceeded that over 2015 to 2018. January had the largest average drought coverage over the study period(61.92%). Droughts at most stations during the remaining months except for October exhibited a weakening trend(slope > 0). The CDI provides a novel approach for drought monitoring in areas with complex terrain such as Yunnan Province.展开更多

文摘The normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) is one of the key input variables for developing drought indices. However, the NDVI quickly saturates in high vegetation surfaces, and thus, the generalization of a drought index over different ecosystems becomes a challenge. This paper presents a novel, dynamic stretching algorithm to overcome the saturation effect in NDVI.A scaling transformation function to eliminate saturation effects when the vegetation fraction(VF) is large is proposed.Dynamic range adjustment is conducted using three coefficients, namely, the normalization factor(a),the stretching range controlling factor(m),and the stretching size controlling factor(e).The results show that the stretched NDVI(S-NDVI) is more sensitive to vegetation fraction than NDVI when the VF is large, ranging from 0.75 to 1.00.Moreover,the saturation effect in NDVI is effectively removed by using the S-NDVI.Further analysis suggests that there is a good linear correlation between the S-NDVI and the leaf area index(LAI).At the same time, the proposed S-NDVI significantly reduces or even eliminates the saturation effect over high biomass.A comparative analysis is performed between drought indices derived from NDVI and S-NDVI,respectively.In the experiment, reflectance data from the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer(MODIS) products and in-situ observation data from the meteorological sites at a regional scale are used.In this study, the coefficient of determination(R2) of the stretched drought index(S-DI) is above 0.5,indicating the reliability of the proposed algorithm with surface soil moisture content. Thus, the S-DI is suggested to be used as a drought index in extended regions, thus regional heterogeneity should be taken into account when applying stretching method.

文摘Temperature vegetation dryness index (TVDI) and crop water stress index (CWSI) are two commonly used remote sens- ing-based agricultural drought indicators. Results from the study showed that: (1) drought conditions measured by TVDI and CWSI had a number of similarities, which indicated that both CWSI and TVDI can be used for drought monitoring, although they had some discrepancies in the spatiotemporal characteristics of drought intensity of this region; and (2) both standardized precipitation index (SPI) and SM contents at the depth of 10 and 20 cm had better correlations to CWSI than to TVDI, indicating that there were more statistically significant relationships between CWSI and SPI/SM, and that CWSI is a more reliable indicator for assessing and monitoring droughts in this region.

文摘Using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS) data from the dry season during 2010–2012 over the whole Yunnan Province, an improved temperature vegetation dryness index(iTVDI), in which a parabolic dry-edge equation replaces the traditional linear dry-edge equation, was developed, to reveal the regional drought regime in the dry season. Using iTVDI facilitates drought warning and irrigation scheduling, and the expectation is that this new index can be broadly applied in other areas.

文摘It is accepted that climate change has a great impact on water cycle and regional water balance, and thus it would change the formation and evolution conditions of drought in some degree. Since the 21 stcentury,an obvious trend toward drought can be observed in the whole basin, especially in the Xijiang subbasin, which, consequently, poses an increasing challenge for the water resource planning and management.

文摘MPI (microwave polarization index) method can use different frequencies at vertical polarization to retrieve soil moisture from TMI (tropical microwave imager) data, which is mainly suitable for bare soil. The improved MPI method and precipitation are used to analyze the drought in Southwest China, and the analysis indicates the soil moisture retrieved by improved MPI method can be used to monitor the drought.

文摘Based on the principle of vegetation water supply index(VWSI), relative normalized difference vegetation index(RNDVI) and relative land surface temperature(RLST) are proposed, with which a modified vegetation water supply index(MVWSI) is constructed, i.e.,MVWSI=RNDVI/RLST^2. Compared with vegetation condition index(VCI), temperature condition index(TCI), vegetation temperature condition index(VTCI) and temperature vegetation drought index(TVDI), MVWSI is simpler in calculation and more stable hence more easily realized in application.
文摘Jordan is very vulnerable to drought because of its location in the arid to semi-arid part of the Middle East. Using the first and second order Markov probabilities can complement the ARIMA predictions.

文摘The high resolution satellite precipitation products bear great potential for large-scale drought monitoring, especially for those regions with sparsely or even without gauge coverage. It suggests that the TMPA 3B42V7 precipitation data can be used for monitoring the occurrence of drought in the Weihe River Basin.

文摘Agricultural flash droughts are high-impact phenomena, characterized by rapid soil moisture dry down. As a result of these processes, the frequency of both upperlevel and root-zone flash drought is projected to more than double in the mid-and high latitudes over the 21st century, with hot spots developing in the temperate regions of Europe, and humid regions of South America, Europe, and southern Africa.
文摘Many regions of the world are experiencing an increase in the frequency and intensity of droughts. This study also recommends that the Iranian government develop programs to help decrease the consumption of ground water resources in the province of Fars to ensure the long term sustainability of the watersheds in this province.
文摘Drought monitoring represents a challenge for water and agricultural sector as this natural hazard accelerates water deficiency and leads to adverse environmental and socioeconomic impacts. Therefore, the study recommends the adoption of these remotely sensed indices for monitoring and mapping of agricultural droughts.

文摘Climate change is expected to have long-term impacts on drought and wildfire risks in Oregon as summers continue to become warmer and drier. For the projected climate scenarios, the decrease in drought propagation time will likely stress the timing and capacity of water supply in the basin for irrigation and other uses.

文摘Simultaneous stresses of salinity and drought often coincide during rice-growing seasons in saline lands, primarily due to insufficient water resources and inadequate irrigation facilities.Consequently, combined salinity-drought stress poses a major threat to rice production. In this study, two salinity levels(NS,non-salinity;HS,high salinity)along with three drought treatments(CC,control condition;DJ,drought stress imposed at jointing;DH,drought stress imposed at heading)were performed to investigate their combined influences on leaf photosynthetic characteristics, biomass accumulation, and rice yield formation.Salinity, drought, and their combination led to a shortened growth period from heading to maturity, resulting in a reduced overall growth duration.Grain yield was reduced under both salinity and drought stress, with a more substantial reduction under the combined salinity-drought stress. The combined stress imposed at heading caused greater yield losses in rice compared with the stress imposed at jointing.Additionally, the combined salinity-drought stress induced greater decreases in shoot biomass accumulation from heading to maturity,as well as in shoot biomass and nonstructural carbohydrate(NSC)content in the stem at heading and maturity. However,it increased the harvest index and NSC remobilization reserve.Salinity and drought reduced the leaf area index and SPAD value of flag leaves and weakened the leaf photosynthetic characteristics as indicated by lower photosynthetic rates, transpiration rates, and stomatal conductance. These reductions were more pronounced under the combined stress.Salinity, drought, and especially their combination, decreased the activities of ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase, while increasing the contents of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and superoxide radical. Our results indicated a more significant yield loss in rice when subjected to combined salinity-drought stress. The individual and combined stresses of salinity and drought diminished antioxidant enzyme activities, inhibited leaf photosynthetic functions, accelerated leaf senescence, and subsequently lowered assimilate accumulation and grain yield.

文摘Development of drought monitoring techniques is important for understanding and mitigating droughts and for rational agricultural management. The CDI provides a novel approach for drought monitoring in areas with complex terrain such as Yunnan Province.

文摘The exogenous application of melatonin by the root drenching method is an effective way to improve crop drought resistance. However, the optimal concentration of melatonin by root drenching and the physiological mechanisms underlying melatonin-induced drought tolerance in cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.)roots remain elusive. This study determined the optimal concentration of melatonin by root drenching and explored the protective effects of melatonin on cotton roots. The results showed that 50μmol L-1 melatonin was optimal and significantly mitigated the inhibitory effect of drought on cotton seedling growth.Exogenous melatonin promoted root development in drought-stressed cotton plants by remarkably increasing the root length, projected area, surface area, volume, diameter, and biomass.Melatonin also mitigated the drought-weakened photosynthetic capacity of cotton and regulated the endogenous hormone contents by regulating the relative expression levels of hormone-synthesis genes under drought stress.Melatonin-treated cotton seedlings maintained optimal enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant capacities, and produced relatively lower levels of reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde, thus reducing the drought stress damage to cotton roots(such as mitochondrial damage). Moreover, melatonin alleviated the yield and fiber length declines caused by drought stress.Taken together, these findings show that root drenching with exogenous melatonin increases the cotton yield by enhancing root development and reducing the root damage induced by drought stress. In summary, these results provide a foundation for the application of melatonin in the field by the root drenching method.
