A stable gravitational perturbation signal is received within a few days before the earthquakes. The gravitational perturbation signal before the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008 has main frequency of 0.1–0.3 Hz, and the other four have frequency bands of 0.12-0.17 Hz and 0.06-0.085 Hz. For earthquakes in continental and oceanic plate fault zones, gravity anomalies often appear on the superconducting gravimeters away from the epicenter, whereas the stations near the epicenter record small or no anomalies. The results suggest that this kind of gravitational perturbation signals correlate with earthquake occurrence, making them potentially useful earthquake predictors. The far-field effect of the gravitational perturbation signals may reveal the interaction mechanisms of the Earth’s tectonic plates. However, owing to the uneven distribution of gravity tide stations, the results need to be further confirmed in the future.展开更多

Based on the WGM2012 Bouguer gravity anomaly data and the Etopo1topography data, this study first introduced a joint inversion of admittance and coherence functions and used the Bayesian optimal parameter estimation method to obtain the effective elastic thickness Teand loading ratio F of the lithosphere for various tectonic units in the Anatolian Plateau. Secondly, we discussed the characteristics and influencing factors of the lithospheric mechanical strength and analyzed its relationship with seismic activity. The lithospheric mechanical strength of the Anatolian Plateau showed clear lateral heterogeneity and a "weak-strong-weak" spatial pattern from east to west, reflecting various tectonic processes. At last, the strong seismic activity was found where the lithospheric strength was low in the Anatolian Plate. We also incorporated GPS strain rate and other results to investigate the tectonic background and primary causes of the M_(W)7.8 and M_(W)7.5 doublet earthquakes in Turkey. The results have a good insight into urban safety design in the Turkish region, including postdisaster rehabilitation, earthquake hazard assessment, and loss reduction.展开更多

In this regard, a total of 602 recordings from 96 aftershocks of the Wenchuan earthquake with magnitudes of M3.7-M6.5 were selected as a dataset. These recordings were obtained from 28 stations at a hypocenter distance ranging from 30 km to 150 km. The inversion results have been verified as reliable by comparing the site response at station 62WUD using the Generalized Inversion Technique (GIT) and the Standard Spectral Ratio method (SSR). For all 28 stations, the site predominant frequency F and the average site amplification in different frequency bands of 1.0-5.0 Hz, 5.0-10.0 Hz and 1.0-10.0 Hz have been calculated based on the inversion results. Compared with the results from the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) method, it shows that the HVSR method can reasonably estimate the site predominant frequency but underestimates the site amplification. The linear fitting between the average site amplification for each frequency band and the V20 (the average uppermost-20 m shear wave velocity) shows good correlation. A distance measurement called the asperity distance DAspt is proposed to reasonably characterize the source-to-site distance for large earthquakes. Finally, the inversed site response is used to identify the soil nonlinearity in the main shock and aftershocks of Wenchuan earthquake. In ten of the 28 stations analyzed in the main shock, the soil behaved nonlinearly, where the ground motion level is apparently beyond a threshold ofPGA 〉 300 cm/s^2 or PGV 〉 20 cm/s, and only one station coded 51SFB has evidence of soil nonlinear behavior in the aftershocks.展开更多

The study was carried out through analyses in the time and frequency domains of main earthquake records. In the PGA attenuation study, records from 316 stations less than 1000 km from the surface rupture of the fault were used as a database and attenuation relationships were developed and compared with some existing relationships that are widely used in China's Mainland, Chinese Taiwan and the US. At the same time, records from 28 stations less than 100 km from the fault were used to study the hanging wall effect and velocity pulse characteristics of this earthquake based on the distribution of PGA, PGV, spectral acceleration, and the velocity pulse peak, and the results are compared with the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake. In addition, the large PGAs of the UD components observed in this event are also discussed in this paper. From the results of the preliminary study, some conclusions are developed and suggestions for further research are proposed.展开更多

The empirical attenuation relations of the horizontal and vertical peak ground accelerations (PGA) for the Jiji (Chi-Chi) earthquake are developed by regression method. By examining the residuals from the Jiji (Chi-Chi) earthquake-specific peak acceleration attenuation relations, it is found that there are systematic differences between PGA on the hanging-wall and footwall. The recorded peak accelerations are higher on the hanging-wall and lower on the footwall. The clear asymmetry of PGA distribution to the surface rupture trace can also be seen from the PGA contour map. These evidences indicate that the PGA attenuates faster on the hanging-wall than on the footwall. In the study of near-source strong motion, seismic hazard assessment, scenario earthquake and seismic disaster prediction, the style-of-faulting must be considered in order that the attenuation model can reflect the characteristic of ground motion in various seismic environmental regions.展开更多

The simulations of coseismic gravity change and deformation indicate that the dislocation has dip-slip characteristics. The results also show that the coseismic deformation exhibits a symmetrical, positive-and-negative distribution, with the deformation usually being less than 10 mm in the far- field but up to 140 mm in the near-field. The gravity changes are concentrated on the fault-projection area, which is greatly affected by the vertical surface deformation. The gravity change and vertical deformation in the far field are usually less than and 5 mm, respectively, but reach and 330 mm, respectively, in the near field. The simulated results agree well with the measured resuhs, which suggests a theoretical basis for the observed change in gravity before and after this earthquake.展开更多

Based on the Turkstra criteria, the stochastic characters of wind velocity, earthquake ground acceleration and excitations occurrence probability are taken into account and then the combination of the earthquake effects in structure wind resistant design is analyzed with the convolution approach. The results indicate that as for the tall flexible buildings whose lateral force is governed by wind loading, the maximum lateral loads verification with respect to the wind resistant design combined with earthquake effects may be more unfavorable compared with that in terms of the earthquake resistant design involving wind effects.展开更多

Based on a residual analysis of ground motion parameters characterizing the hanging wall effect and in recognition of the nature of the effect, many models have been developed. In this study, after a comprehensive analysis of two existing models, a new model is proposed and used to model the hanging wall effect in horizontal peak ground acceleration (PGAH) and spectral acceleration (SAH) at a period of 0.1s in the Wenchuan earthquake. Finally, comparisons between the modeling results of the hanging wall effect in the Wenchuan earthquake and the results predicted by using Abrahamson and Silva's NGA model (AS NGA) indicate that the AS NGA model predicts a much higher hanging wall effect than the model developed in this paper. Furthermore, the AS NGA model predicts a large hanging wall effect even at great distances, while the proposed model more accurately captures the trend of the effect.展开更多

These allow for accurate identification of the cycle and phase characteristics of the physical parameters of the periodic variation. Although periodic variations in earth- quake activity have long been studied, this paper is the first to apply the phase folding algorithm to the analysis of shallow (〈70 km) seismic data for the period 1973-2010. The goal is to study the phase distribution characteristics of earthquake frequencies and we see a connection between earthquake occurrence and solar and lunar cycles. First, the rotation of the Sun may play a significant role in impacting on the occurrence time of earthquakes with magnitudes of less than 6.0. This may be especially pertinent for earth- quakes with magnitudes between 5.0 and 6.0, when the modulation ratio reaches 12 %. The Moon's gravity, which is generally thought to have the greatest influence on the global environment, may actually play less of a role on earthquake timing than the rotation of the Sun. Second, when we consider the world to be divided into 72 local regions based on latitude and longitude, we can see that there are more than a dozen regions with significant non- uniform distributions of earthquake occurrence time. In these regions, the ratio of χ2 to the number of degrees of freedom far exceeds five. As a result, we posit that some factors associated with the Sun-Earth-Moon relationship may trigger earthquake activity under certain temporal and spatial conditions.展开更多

The results indicate that: the influences have a relationship with the attitude of faults and the relative position between calculated points and fault. The difference distribution form of simula- ted results between the two models is similar to that of co-seismic effect. For the per centum distribution, it' s restricted by the zero line of the co-seismic effects obviously. Its positive is far away from the zero line. For the crustal thickness, the effect is about 10% -20%. The negative and the effect over 30% focus around the zero line. The average influences of crustal layering and thickness for the E-W displacement, N-S displacement, vertical displacement and gravity changes are 18.4 % , 18.0% , 15.8 % and 16.2% respectively, When the crustal thickness is 40 km, they are 4.6% ,5.3% ,3.8% and 3.8%. Then the crustal thickness is 70 kin, the average influences are 3.5%, 4. 6% ,3.0% and 2.5% respectively.展开更多

文摘Since the beginning of the 21st century, major earthquakes have frequently occurred worldwide. To explore the impact of astronomical factors on earthquakes,in this study, the statistical analysis method of correlation is used to systematically analyze the effects of astronomical factors, such as solar activity,Earth’s rotation, lunar declination angle, celestial tidal force, and other phenomena on M≥8 global earthquakes at the beginning of the 21st century. With regard to solar activity, this study focuses on the analysis of the 11-year and century cycles of solar activity. The causal relationship of the Earth’s rotation is not obvious in this work and previous works;in contrast, the valley period of the solar activity century cycle may be an important astronomical factor leading to the frequent occurrence of global earthquakes at the beginning of the 21st century. This topic warrants further study.

文摘Aiming at the problem that it is difficult to obtain the explicit expression of the structural matrix in the traditional train-bridge coupling vibration analysis,a combined simulation system of train-bridge coupling system(TBCS)under earthquake(MAETB)is developed based on the cooperative work of MATLAB and ANSYS.The simulation system is used to analyze the dynamic parameters of the TBCS of a prestressed concrete continuous rigid frame bridge benchmark model of a heavy-haul railway. The influence of different driving speeds, seismic wave intensities, and traveling wave effects on the dynamic response of the TBCS under the actions of the earthquakes is discussed. The results show that the bridge displacement increase in magnitude in the lateral direction is more significant than in the vertical direction under the action of an earthquake. The traveling wave effect can significantly reduce the lateral response of the bridge, but it will significantly increase the train derailment coefficient. When the earthquake intensity exceeds 0.2 g,the partial derailment coefficient of the train has exceeded the limit value of the specification.

文摘The generalized inversion of S-wave amplitude spectra from the free-field strong motion recordings of the China National Strong Motion Observation Network System (NSMONS) are used to evaluate the site effects in the Wenchuan area. In ten of the 28 stations analyzed in the main shock, the soil behaved nonlinearly, where the ground motion level is apparently beyond a threshold ofPGA 〉 300 cm/s^2 or PGV 〉 20 cm/s, and only one station coded 51SFB has evidence of soil nonlinear behavior in the aftershocks.

文摘A preliminary study of the PGA attenuation, hanging wall effect and velocity pulse characteristics from the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake ofMS -8.0 is described in this paper. From the results of the preliminary study, some conclusions are developed and suggestions for further research are proposed.

文摘The M=7.6 Jiji (Chi-Chi) earthquake, Taiwan Province, on September 21, 1999 (local time) is a thrust fault style earthquake. In the study of near-source strong motion, seismic hazard assessment, scenario earthquake and seismic disaster prediction, the style-of-faulting must be considered in order that the attenuation model can reflect the characteristic of ground motion in various seismic environmental regions.

文摘Using plane dislocation theory and the seismic-wave inversion results from the Institute of Geophysics, China Earthquake Administration and the Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences models, the surface coseismic deformation and gravity changes caused by the 2013 Ms7.0 Lushan earthquake are simulated. The simulated results agree well with the measured resuhs, which suggests a theoretical basis for the observed change in gravity before and after this earthquake.

文摘Systematic differences in the duration and frequency content of ground motions from the hanging wall and footwall during the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake are investigated, focusing on the influence of these differences on structural input energy based on the elastic and inelastic energy responses of structures.A comparison of the input energy spectra between the hanging wall and the footwall reveal that the structural input energy on the hanging wall is not amplified due to the short duration and low peak ground velocity to acceleration ratio(V/A).However,the larger demand of structural input energy on the footwall in the range of medium and long periods is observed and the demand increases up to 50% relative to the average level of structural input energy for rupture distances larger than 30 km.The importance of considering the footwall effect on structural input energy when comparing ground motions in the range of medium and long periods is recognized.
文摘In this study we performed a classical spectrum analysis of seismic waveforms recorded at far field stations of the great MW7.9 Wenchuan earthquake to observe the shifts of the corner frequency with azimuth due to the Doppler effect. Our results show that this damaging great earthquake had a dominating rupture propagation direction of 64.0°.The equivalent radius of the fault rupture surface was estimated to be 33 km,yielding the rupture area of about 3 500 km2.Thus the length of the rupture fault surface is about 230 km if the depth(or width) extent is 15 km.The computer program developed in this study can quickly provide the information about the source of a future large(damaging) earthquake, which could be very useful for predicting aftershocks and planning the rescue operations.

文摘A model on the earthquake effects combination in wind resistant design of high-rise flexible structures is proposed in accordance with the probability method. Based on the Turkstra criteria, the stochastic characters of wind velocity, earthquake ground acceleration and excitations occurrence probability are taken into account and then the combination of the earthquake effects in structure wind resistant design is analyzed with the convolution approach. The results indicate that as for the tall flexible buildings whose lateral force is governed by wind loading, the maximum lateral loads verification with respect to the wind resistant design combined with earthquake effects may be more unfavorable compared with that in terms of the earthquake resistant design involving wind effects.

文摘The hanging wall effect is an important factor that impacts the characteristics of strong ground motions in near-fault areas. Furthermore, the AS NGA model predicts a large hanging wall effect even at great distances, while the proposed model more accurately captures the trend of the effect.

文摘Based on the limit analysis upper bound method,a new model of soil slope collapse has been proposed which consists of two rigid block zones and a plastic shear zone.Soil slope was induced failure by coupling effect of rainfall and earthquake, and these blocks were also incorporated horizontal earthquake force and vertical gravitate. The velocities and forces were analyzed in three blocks, and the expression of velocity discontinuities was obtained by the principle of incompressibility. The external force work for the blocks, the internal energy of the plastic shear zone and the velocity discontinuous were solved. The present stability ratios are compared to the prevenient research, which shows the superiority of the mechanism and rationality of the analysis. The critical height of the soil slope can provide theoretical basis for slope support and design.

文摘Phase folding algorithms are conventionally used in periodicity analyses using X-ray astronomy pulsar. As a result, we posit that some factors associated with the Sun-Earth-Moon relationship may trigger earthquake activity under certain temporal and spatial conditions.

文摘Using the PSGRN/PSCMP software and the fault model offered by USGS and on the basis of finite rectangular dislocation theory and the local layered wave velocity structures of the crust-upper-mantle, the in- fluences of crustal layering and thickness on co-seismic gravity changes and deformation of Wenchuan earthquake have been simulated. Then the crustal thickness is 70 kin, the average influences are 3.5%, 4. 6% ,3.0% and 2.5% respectively.
