Returning farmland to lake is one of the important parts of restoring wetland ecosystem function in the Yangtze River Valley of China. Whether the project of lake recovery can be successful depends on the compensation to the farmers who have lost their original benefits and contributed to the wetland ecosystem recovery by returning farmland to lake. Aiming at the wetland recovery of the Dongting Lake, the practical implementation of pro- grams of the lake recovery and flood control in this area has been challenged by the heavy task of population resettlement, so it is an ideal area for case studies to reach the academic objectives proposed as the above. Based on field survey and experimentation, this research evaluated the benefit losses of the resettled farmers and the increased values of ecosystem service functions caused by wetland recovery, and furthermore, the value of eco-compensation for relocated farmers was calculated by considering the combination of the farmers' compensation appeal. The value of eco-compensation for relocated farmers in the Dongting Lake area was 6084.5 yuan per household by synthetic analysis of the effects on wetland ecosystem restoration. Moreover, this article took Dongting Lake area as a case to study and explore the basic issues of the eco-compensation by returning farmland to lake, that was who should pay, who should be paid, how much the payment was and what the payment means was, which sought the mechanisms of wetland restoration eco-compensation and prompted the people's enthusiasms for ecological restoration.展开更多

One of them, the Grassland Eco-compensation Policy(GEP), is the biggest program for grassland protection in China since 1949. The GEP conserves natural grassland by paying herders cash subsidies. It also has worldwide significance because it can increase vegetative cover, improve the ecological balance, increase carbon sequestration and lessen the amount of dust reaching other countries through inhibiting soil erosion. Overall, we find that its ecological and socioeconomic effects are beneficial and further benefits may be observed in the future because while the socioeconomic effects usually appear quickly, ecological effects may take longer to manifest. 2015 is the last year for the first round of the GEP policy implementation and the extended policy for the GEP will be approved and continued by the central government. To make the policy more successful, we suggest coordinated planning, a comprehensive overview, higher compensation and collaborative study. Efficient implementation of the GEP could also provide valuable experience for other eco-compensation programs in China and numerous other regions of the world.展开更多

The implementing objectives and processing program of Scottish policy were respectively set forth, including 6 steps of statement of Intent, proposal, assessment, contract signing, claims and inspections, breaches and penalties.Therein 3 meaningful aspects for the construction of current compensation mechanism in China were as following: keeping consistency between national and local policies to establish close connection in eco-goal and funding subsidy, setting both improved assessment procedure and scientific compensation system to promote the lasting implementation of environmental-friendly measures, making correspondent check and monitor mechanism together with breach and penalty mechanism to secure the payment execution.展开更多

The first group consists of professionals and companies in eco-sustainable businesses, such as law firms, insurance companies, investment firms, banking, technological innovation, mass media, medical research and pharmaceutical research. The second group will consist of persons engaged in organic/eco-sustainable agriculture whose crops and animal husbandry practices can be transferred successfully to Climate Change Haven regions. The present research focuses on the social and economic variables that must be taken into account to insure that each new Climate Change Haven Community becomes successfully integrated with the local population and forms a cohesive, harmonious social structure. Examples are given from the United States, France, Spain, Portugal and Italy.展开更多

During a period of one year, sandflies were collected in three different locations, where the sampled residences were located, respectively, one inside the forest, the other two, respectively at the edge of the forest and the other in a more urbanized area. These three types of ecotopes were evaluated: home, peridomicile and kennel. Four hundred and fifty-six sandflies were collected and six species belonging to five genera were identified: Migonemyia migonei, Lutzomyia longipalpis, Nyssomyia intermedia, Evandromyia sallesi, Evandromyia edwardsi and Brumptomyia wedge. The two most abundant species collected were M. migonei and L. longipalpis, contributing 70% and 18% respectively, totaling 88% of the individuals collected. The results suggested that modifications of the natural environment due to anthropic action probably resulted in changes in the composition of the sand fly population. At point (3), where spraying occurred irregularly, even representing a degraded environment, only one species was captured, M. migonei. Differently at points (1) and (2), areas located respectively in the interior and on the edge of the Atlantic Forest, a greater number of sand fly species was observed. However, after a few years, anthropic actions ceased, followed by the implementation of reforestation projects and currently the landscape is very different, showing considerable forest recovery. For this reason, ecotourism activities are increasing in the area, creating potentially dangerous conditions caused by the exposure of greater numbers of people and dogs to insect vectors. Therefore, the implementation of environmental education projects is essential. However, we suggest that the use of warning signs to be placed at the entrances to the main traffic routes, alerting tourists to the risk of infection and indicating protective measures, would be very useful.展开更多
