The main premise of the paper is that effective communication is more than a matter of linguistic proficiency and the learner's pragmatic competence is more or less arrested by the negative cultural transfer from the mother tongue, and based on that premise, the paper analyses the reasons behind negative cultural transfer from the lexical dimension, the speech act dimension, and the psychological dimension, and concludes with a tripartite toolkit of alleviating principles respectively corresponding to the classroom instruction, the teachers, and the students.展开更多

It mainly studies the similarities between Chinese Pinyin and English phonemes. And the author views that owing to children’s individual requirements of development, teachers can lead children to connecting their previous existing Chinese Pinyin knowledge with their new knowledge and take the advantages of these similarities to make a positive transfer in learning English phonemes.展开更多

With the increase of student enrollment in Higher Vocational Technical College (HVTC), the quality of students is declining in the meantime and especially the students who major in English have a low proficiency in English language. This thesis explores the theory of phonetics and the theory of transfer in second language learning and deals with negative transfer of mother tongue in segmental and supra-segmental levels to HVTC students when they learn English pronunciation and intonation.展开更多

It claims that learners' the native language (NL) or first language (L1) will make great impacts, either promoting or hindering, on their second language (L2) acquisition, i.e. positive transfer and negative transfer. The issue has been widely concerned and researched in such relative fields as language education and psychological study during the past years. It is far beyond the scope of this paper to discuss it thoroughly since the scope of L1 influence is so wide that it affects almost all linguistic subsystems. Instead, this paper aims to focus on how the Chinese language facilitates Chinese learners' English lexical acquisition. Some suggestions on how to make use of the positive aspects is provided at the end of the paper for practical purpose.展开更多

In the C —E translation of instructions of goods, transfer occurs as well. It is necessary to give a through study into those negative transfers in the instructions to improve the quality of translation. This paper takes the English instructions of electronic appliance in the New Century Supermarket in N anchang University as the subjects. Through a qualitative and a quantitative study of the subjects, the author concludes that negative transfer can be found here and there in the English instructions-negative transfer at lexical level, syntactical level and discourse level, negative transfer at syntactical level having the highest frequency. This paper also explores the reason why the phenomena occurs.展开更多

For Chinese English learners of the beginning stage, English articles are usually taught in the first several lessons. Although English articles are seeming ly easy in terms of their semantic meanings, few Chinese learners can really arrive at the level where they can use them proficient ly and grasp their usage in their entirety. Some researchers hold that the negative transfer of Chinese can account for that problem because the Chinese language doesn't have an article system which is equivalent to that of English, while others strongly criticize this viewpoint. The paper is aimed at verifying the mother tongue interference on the acquisition of English articles by advanced Chinese English learners, especially at how the differences in generic expressions between Chinese and English give rise to those problems concerning the acquisition of English articles. Owing to the limitation of the length and depth of this paper, a hypothe sis that Chinese English learners generally consider the English indefinite article"a/an"as being equal to"一个"in their mother tongue is put forward as a premise. To prove this hypothesis, two mini tests were carried out among 47 senior English majors in two classes respectively in BLCU and the results of the tests conform to the hypothesis positively. It can be safely asserted that due to the negative transfer of Chinese on the acquisition of English articles, even advanced Chinese English learners display their cog nitive inadequacies of English generic references performed by English articles and inappropriate omission of English indefinite ar ticles.展开更多
