A Comparative Study of the English Translations of“Chun Ye Xi Yu”From the Perspective of Register Theory

Ancient poetry is an irreplaceable component of Chinese culture and an invaluable asset in China’s cultural heritage.With the rapid development of globalization and informatization,Chinese poem is attracting more and more interests and focuses as one part of China’s cultural soft power which plays an important role on spreading traditional Chinese culture.Systemic functional linguistics mainly explores the essence,entailment,system and structure of language from the perspective of social culture,especially the relationship between context and discourse.Therefore,the paper applies the register theory to Chinese poem translations of Xu Yuanchong and Yang Xianyi of“Chun Ye Xi Yu”in order to compare two translated texts from three aspects of field,tenor,and mode,and examine the expression of the connotation of the original poem between the two translations.

Comparative Textual Studies on Bai Hua's Poem Xiatian Hai Hen Yuan and Its English Translations

Based on the poem Xiatian Hai Hen Yuan夏天还很远, one of the most characteristic works of the Chinese poet Bai Hua, along with its four English translations, this paper conducts comparative textual studies with regard to three aspects, including the translation of hidden personae, the selection of the tense and aspectas well as the rendition of poetic rhythms. The author holds the view that, on the one hand, different textual interpretations have gone a long way toward the dissemination of the original poem in the English-speaking world;on the other hand, the translator's proper understanding and rendition is of great significance with a view to a better presentation of the unique beauty of Chinese poetry both in the content and the form.

A Comparative Analysis on Nine English Translations of Mao Zedong Poems

A poem can not be interpreted to its exact meaning, which determines the different understanding and translation strategies and the ensuing different translation versions. This paper, by analyzing nine versions of Mao Zedong＇s poems from its form, choice of words, imagery and meters, finds that Prof. Li Zheng-shuan＇s version has reproduced both the lyrical and spiritual effects in the translation： Looking at it, it＇s pleasant to the eyes; listening to it, it＇s agreeable to the ear; thinking about it, it＇s penetrating to the mind; reading it, it＇s flowing fluently on the tongue

The Functional Approach to the Teaching of Translation: A Case Study on Beiying and Its English Translations

This paper reports the attempt to apply the functional approach to the translation teaching practice that guides students in their study of Chinese essays and their English translations. The famed modern Chinese essay Belying and its three English translations were taken for case study from the perspective of Experiential Function in Systemic Functional Linguistics. A process type analysis of Beiying and its English translations was conducted, including analysis of texts, sample processes, distributions of process types in Beiying and analyses of similarities and differences in the distributions. Results are as follows： 1） The similarities between English and Chinese texts lie in the experiential world, which makes translation possible. The process types in the essay text are directly related to genre, and the material process predominates among the process types in essay texts. 2） The differences are that the percentage of the material process in the ST is higher than that in the three English translations, and this shows the characteristics of verb-prominence in Chinese and nominalization in English. 3） Cultural differences in translation are the root-cause of linguistic differences. These results from the case of practicing the functional approach to the teaching of translation can help students gain understanding of English translations of Beiying and can provide some inspiration for the teaching of Chinese-English essay translation and the related studies.

From“Semantic Equivalence”to“Verve Reproduction”—Exploration on Xu Yuanchong’s English Translation of the Analects

This paper focuses on the English translation of Xu Yuanchong’s Analects,explains in depth the theory of semantic equivalence and the theory of verve reproduction.It analyzes the application and integration of these two theories by Xu Yuanchong in detail.Through a comprehensive textual analysis,this paper summarizes the remarkable achievements of the English translation of the Analects,such as the accurate transmission of semantics and the vivid reproduction of cultural charm,which is expected to bring new thinking directions and valuable references to the study of the English translation of the Analects.

English Translation of Chinese Natural Ecological Discourse:A Corpus-based Case Study on Xi Jinping:The Governance of China

Amid the increasingly severe global natural eco-environment,it is necessary to build a natural ecological civilization by constructing an ecological civilization discourse.Against this background,this study compiles a corpus of natural ecological discourse in the English translation of Xi Jinping:The Governance of China(short for Xi).By using Wordsmith and AntConc,this study explores the linguistic features of the ecological discourse in English translation of Xi in the following dimensions,including high-frequency words,keywords,word collocations,concordance lines.This study aims to analyze the concepts and attitudes towards natural ecology,so as to provide certain valuable insights for the construction of China’s discourse on natural ecological civilization.The study found that the natural ecology discourse involving in the English translation of Xi turned out to be ecologically beneficial.

A Study of the English Translation of Characteristic Cuisines of the Hexi Corridor from the Perspective of Multimodal Discourse Analysis

Given the diversity of geographical and cultural backgrounds,it is difficult to find precise counterparts of many food-related vocabularies in the unique dietary culture of the Hexi Corridor in the target language,making it challenging to fully convey the essence of its local dietary culture in translation.To achieve the purpose of translation,the theory of multimodal discourse analysis provides an ideal translation approach through the language mode,image mode,sound mode,and the synergistic effect of multimodalities,which can accurately address the deficiencies in the translation of dietary culture.Through this research,it is not only possible to highlight the unique charm of the dietary culture of the Hexi Corridor but also to build a bridge for its international dissemination,promoting cross-border cultural exchanges and mutual understanding.

A Contrastive Analysis of Three English Translation of Camel Xiangzi from the Perspective of Functional Equivalence

Nida＇ s Functional Equivalence Theory has made a great contribution to the translation industry, which means the translation should reach the functional equivalence between two languages rather than the rigid correspondence of the texts. Functional Equivalence Theory includes stylistic equivalence, glossary equivalence and passage equivalence. The literary work selected in this paper is a famous classic novel, Camel Xiangzi, in which the features of the language employed by author are fizll of＂Chinese characteristics.＂ Just because of the characteristics, the task is more difficult in the process of the wanslating. In this paper, it makes a contrastive analysis of the translations to the fourth chapter of Camel Xiangzi by using Nida＇s Functional Equivalence Theory. There are three kinds of English versions, which were selected from a Chinese-American translator Shi Xiaojing＇s translation Camel Xiangzi, American translator Evan King＇ s translation Rickshaw Boy and American translator Jean M.James＇ s translation Richshaw： the Novel Lo-t＇o Hsinang Tz~ Due to limited words, this paper mainly analyzes the novel from the glossary, the stylistic and the passage equivalence. The result is that Jean M.James＇ s translation maximizes to achieve Functional Equivalence Theory, it also tries to reach formal equivalence, and her Wanslafion compensates for lack of the theory. What＇ s more, it verifies the feasibility and directive significance in translation of functional equivalence.
