This article reports on part of the findings of an investigation into the perceptions of Chinese English as a foreign language(EFL)education stakeholders on native-speakerism.Data were collected via semi-structured interviews with 26 students,14 teachers and eight EFL program administrators from six Chinese universities. The analysis of data reveals that the three groups of participants as an entirety expected their universities to hire native English speaker teachers(NESTs),particularly those from Britain and/or America and a certain proportion of them expressed preference for white native English speaker(NES)teachers. The vast majority of the students and teachers were also found to be unaware of workplace inequalities between NNESTs and local Chinese EFL teachers, contending that NESTs deserve better treatment.Although many administrators displayed critical awareness on this issue, they argued that the inequalities need tolerating for the well-being of their EFL programs. All these findings are indicative of the persistence of native-speakerism among Chinese ELT stakeholders and by extension the tenacity of this chauvinistic ideology across the terrain of EFL education in China. 展开更多

Introduction In educational theory, as with most things, there exist fashions and trends. Within the field of foreign language teaching the communicative approach is with good reason very fasharable in the west. The name certainly makes it difficult to argue with, who would want to use the ’non-communicative’ approach to teaching a foreign language? The need to communicate in a language is what makes language teaching different from teaching many other subjects. If you study geography, you learn about places, but if you only learn about a language it is not enough. 展开更多

The purpose of this quasi-experimental study is to examine whether attention cueing benefits learners of ancient Egyptian culture using mobile-assisted instrumentation.A self-regulatory,mobile phone based set of visualizations depicting ancient Egyptian culture served as the primary instrument.A total of 50 learners of English as a foreign language(EFL)from two sections of a reading course were randomly assigned to one of two groups.First, the participants were tested to assess their English reading level and prior knowledge of Egyptian culture.Next, they were randomly assigned to one of two modes:picture-plus-text or picture-plus-text-plus-signal.Immediately after experimental treatment, participants were administered tests of pictorial recall, matching, jigsaw puzzles, and retention as well as cognitive load measurement and attitude questionnaires.Experimental treatment was the independent variable, while the comprehension test, cognitive load questionnaire, and attitude questionnaire were the dependent variables. The results indicated that learners in the cueing condition outperform those in a non-cueing condition for matching and total score, but not for retention. The analysis of cognitive load revealed that learners in the cueing condition experience lower germane load than those in the non-cueing condition. However, the result of the questionnaires indicated that all the students felt mobile phones were convenient and useful in English learning regardless of the presence or not of attention cueing. The results stress the importance of presenting attention-capturing arrows in external representation as it can result in better learning efficiency. 展开更多

This study set out to explore non-English major postgraduates’use of motivational regulation strategies in English learning.Subjects for this study were 156 Chinese postgraduates studying in a national teacher education university in central China.A self-reported questionnaire and individual semi-structured interviews were complementarily employed to gather data. The non-English major postgraduates were found to have adopted ten types of strategy to regulate their motivation for learning English, but that these strategies were used infrequently. It was also found that despite the general absence of significant difference, the few that could be ascertained were associated with gender, specialty, and grade. The results suggest a need to provide motivation regulation strategies training, and nurture students’intrinsic English learning motivation through curricular, instructional and assessment reforms. 展开更多

Purpose:Learning to do research has been understudied in the context of professional development in postgraduate programs. This exploratory study investigated the agency and experiences of five Chinese students who learned to design their research project in a Master of Education program at an English-medium university in Hong Kong SAR.Design/Approach/Methods:We obtained the data from semi-structured interviews and documents to establish data triangulation.Findings:The findings revealed that(1)the students’agency in research design and proposal writing was associated with their personal/professional backgrounds,(2)their English proficiency affected their agency in the proposal writing,(3)the supervisors’feedback would stimulate students’agency in changing/refining their research design,and(4)ineffective supervision and learning resources would impede students’achievement of agency on their way to creating a robust research design.Originality/Value:This study adds empirical evidence to the field of research training through the lens of learner agency. It demonstrates the applicability of using the ecological framework of agency in theoretically interpreting the contextual facilitators and constraints in making postgraduate students active agents. 展开更多
