In my ten-yeat experience of tenching English as major in college , I feel that students experience more difficulties in listening lessons than in other lessons. What, then, prevents students from achieving success in the listening class? I suggest that anxiety is one of the major factors, which interferes with students listening comprehension. And I would agree with writers such as Gardner and Horwitz et al. (1991)that anxiety may impede learner’s ability to perform successfully in all aspects of learning a foreign language. This study investigated the application and the effect of Group Investigation(GI) in the College English Program in a Chinese University. A qualitative case study method was used to understand the GI system used by Chinese instructors as well as the achievements acquired and challenges met by the participants. Three instructors and fifteen second-year-undergraduates taking a course titled Sources of European Culture participated. Interviews, observations, and documents were used to collect the data. Data analysis showed Chinese instructors applied a GI technique similar to that discussed by Johnson and Johnson(1999); however, GI in the Chinese context demanded more effort from the teacher for designing tasks and provided help in modeling uses of English and in preparing visual, especially Power Point, presentations. Although participants used their mother tongue at some stages, their autonomy over English learning was activated, and horizons in the course content were broadened. 展开更多

Effective English reading requires readers not only possess good English grammar, flexible reading skills and plentiful vocabulary but also master rich cultural background knowledge.However, for the adult students educated in the Continuing Education College, it is rather obvious that they have troubles learning English The author of this thesis pro-posed a new idea of English reading teaching-teaching with allusions and their stories in English reading class.The author tries to apply the relationship between schema theory and reading in the process of teaching adult students so that they can get a deeper understanding of English allusions and their stories.The author of this thesis did an empirical research and made a quantitative analysis for pretest and posttest.The result of this research indicates that to improve English reading proficiency, either teachers or students should attach equal importance both to language structures and to cultural background knowledge. 展开更多

The aim of this paper is to examine metaphors and similes as figures of speech in the language of medieval English mystics.We will focus on three contemplative 14th-century mystics in East Midland;Walter Hilton;the Cloud author;and Julian of Norwich.Metaphors are figures of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily denotes one thing is used to designate another;thus making an implicit comparison;as in“a sea of troubles”.For theoretical background;we adapt Lakoff and Johnson’s subcategorization of metaphors into ontological;orientational;and structural metaphors.Lakoff and Johnson significantly remarked that in everyday life;metaphors are pervasive in not only language but also thought and action.As another device of a figure of speech;we will consider similes whereby two concepts are imaginatively and descriptively compared.The use of figurative speech among the medieval mystics is not random but an effective measure in terms of which we can conceptualize their experience.Metaphors and similes used in mystical discourse cannot help but try and construct what cannot be comprehended by acting on embodying the abstract.Numerous figures of speech found in devotional prose;though some noted earlier in biblical works;are novel in their use.In trying to make the ancient teachings of the Christ accessible for the lay public;the prose observed in this study uses figurative language in association with their writings. 展开更多

In Oman,research on ESP has been attracting a great deal of attention in English language education over the past decade.Nevertheless,little attention has been paid to discover the relationship between the technical students’knowledge of the ESP lexis and their attitudes towards learning ESP in the Omani technical context.Therefore,this research study was conducted to do so and to explore whether the Omani technical students’knowledge of ESP lexis is predictable and is affected by a combination of their attitudes to learning ESP,their gender,and their age.Forty-eight questionnaires were distributed among participants(24 males and 24 females)aged between 24 and 27 years old.The study confirmed the positive relation between people’s knowledge and their feelings;several recommendations were proposed.In addition,the study showed that technical students’attitude towards learning ESP is an issue that must be resolved as it negatively affects improving the students’knowledge of ESP lexes. 展开更多

English is one of the most common languages in the world,and it has become one of the most important subjects in various countries.The native languages of China and Thailand are not English,and both countries are located in Asia and have many similarities in geographical location and cultural background.The Ministries of Education of the two countries have successively put forward relevant policies to promote the development of English education in the country.The implementation of these policies has promoted the development of college English course teaching in the country.These factors determine that the two countries have similarities in college English course teaching for Non-English majors.However,there are differences in teaching mode and teaching staff in the two countries because of their different national conditions,which make many differences,exist in college English course teaching for non-English majors in the two countries.During the author’s career as an exchange student in Chiang Mai University,she experienced the difference of college English course teaching for non-English majors in Thai universities,so the author did some researches on the basis of the understanding of English course teaching in Thai universities.Therefore,this thesis takes Sino-Thai college English course teaching for non-English majors as the research object—takes Jiujiang University and Chiang Mai University as example,and analyses their present situation from the aspects of the development and evolution,the teaching mode,and teaching staff of college English course teaching for non-English majors.On this basis,the author makes a comparative analysis of the English course teaching for non-English majors in two selected universities,then find their respective advantages and disadvantages,and put forward some suggestions on the development of Sino-Thai college English course teaching. 展开更多

This study investigated the perceptions of English educators and supervisors in Jeddah Governorate regarding the process of teaching English to elementary students.A survey was conducted using a sample size of 94 educators and 10 supervisors.The data indicate that respondents considered English instruction at the elementary level essential for expanding kids’perspectives,improving academic performance,and promoting international involvement.The main advantages cited are the development of English language skills and the promotion of early education.Although not as easily noticeable,the disadvantages include potential negative impacts on an individual’s proficiency in Arabic and their sense of national identification.The highlighted challenges encompass insufficient teacher training,student reluctance towards English,limited resources,and school disparities.The proposed techniques focused on prioritizing English instructors’training,ensuring the use of appropriate content,utilizing technology,and promoting awareness of students and educators.The current research found different obstacles in teaching English at elementary stages.To overcome these obstacles,it will be essential to enhance teacher competencies,develop efficient teaching methods,get the backing of stakeholders,assign adequate resources,and carry out continuous evaluations.Further research can also contribute to a better understanding of how early English learning impacts on Arabic identity and proficiency. 展开更多
